Breeder Advice Is health testing important?

Thumbnail

Health testing isn’t optional—it’s the foundation of protecting the future of the breed.

The Golden Retriever Club of America recommends a comprehensive approach to health testing that goes beyond the basics. This includes:

• Hips evaluated by OFA or PennHIP
• Elbows evaluated by OFA
• Cardiac exam by a board-certified cardiologist (advanced/echo preferred)
• Annual eye exams by a board-certified ophthalmologist

These recommendations are in place to help reduce the risk of passing on hereditary conditions and to preserve the health, structure, and longevity of Golden Retrievers.

A CHIC number through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals simply means a dog has completed the required testing—it does not mean the dog “passed” everything, and it does not include genetic testing.

Health testing is about transparency, education, and making informed breeding decisions—not shortcuts.

If we want to protect what we love, we have to be willing to do the work behind the scenes.

Discussion Show-Line or Field-Line?

Have you ever wondered what the differences between a show-line Golden Retriever and a Field/Working line Golden Retriever are?

There is a lot of mis-information out there that makes Golden owners believe if their Golden Retriever has a red coat, they are a field line Golden Retriever or if they have a lighter shade of gold coat, they are a show line Golden Retriever. This is NOT TRUE.

So what actually defines a line?

Titles in your dogs pedigree and generations of purposefully bred dogs is what lets you know wether you have a Show-line, Field-line or neither. If your Golden Retriever shows no titles in their pedigree, they are simply a pet-line Golden Retriever.

Field-Line Golden Retrievers will have AKC hunt titles in their pedigree like: JH, SH, MH, HR, WCX, or competitive titles like QA2 and FC/AFC (The titles listed are examples from AKC - your dog may be registered with CKC or UKC)

Show-Line Golden Retrievers will have AKC conformation titles in their pedigree like: CH, GCH, or international show titles. (The titles listed are examples from AKC - your dog may be registered with CKC or UKC)

Golden Retrievers can also be dual champions, meaning they hold titles for both hunt tests and conformation. Dual Champion dogs have not only been proven in the conformation ring to be bred to standard and hold the breed temperament, but have also been proven and titled to do what they were bred to do in the fields.

A lot of backyard breeders will label their dogs as "Field-Line" or "Show-Line" based only on coat color, with zero titled dogs in the pedigree. They market them as something they are not.

Both show-line and field-line Golden Retrievers should be bred close to standard. There should not be a drastic difference in appearance. You can find more information on the breed standard here: AKC Golden Retriever Breed Standard

English Cream Golden Retrievers are NOT a different breed. This is a marketing tactic/ term used by backyard breeders. They are not breeding for the right reasons - and most likely breeding for color.
You can find more in depth information about this term here: English Cream Golden Retrievers

Lastly, purebred ≠ well-bred.

Discussion east coast rescues

Post image
147 Upvotes

Looking for recommendations for Golden Retriever rescues or adoption agencies on the east coast.

My husband and I lost our best friend (pictured) a couple of years ago and while no dog could ever replace her, I’m starting to think about another.

We recently fostered the sweetest little mixed-breed pup through our local SPCA and the experience really reinforced how much I’d love to rescue rather than purchase a dog from a breeder. (No shame our girl was from a breeder)

We’re local to Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue and have already been approved, but the adoption process is incredibly competitive.

I’d love to hear from anyone who has had a positive experience with other Golden Retriever rescues or adoption organizations, especially throughout New England or elsewhere on the east coast.

Training Advice/Tips Do you take your golden to dog parks?

Post image

I hear a lot of mixed opinions on dog parks, so I am very conflicted. This is my first dog so I had no idea there was any strife with going to dog parks at all. I thought it was a good thing to take our pup to get some socializing and learn how to interact with other dogs but now I’m seeing people say there’s risk of illness, untrained dogs hurting him, or developing aggression.

I have been taking Beau (7 months old) for a week now and we’ve not had any issues so far and he absolutely loves it, although he’s pretty awkward with the other dogs and very submissive (just lays flat on the ground when they approach him).

Just want to know others thoughts!

EDIT: seems the general consensus is stay away, everyone’s reasoning makes a lot of sense here. I do NOT want my boy to be attacked, luckily our neighbors have a german shepherd that is very good with our pup and we have a dog park nearby that is almost always empty so i’ll stick to those!

He was a bit fussy on the train but he did a great job staying calm. No accidents in the hotel room and lots of walkies.

He also saw his first horse! He was very confused.

Our Vita will eat the tiniest of treats quite enthusiastically.

My friends call her overweight when our vet says shes just really big. My best friends family dog is the same type of breed and she’s also massive, and I have another friend with ANOTHER dog of the same type of golden who’s about the same size. Does anyone know why english creams get so big? Or is it just coincidence?

New Puppy New puppy for the family?

Post image

My family has the option of getting a puppy from these parents, half golden retriever half Labrador They were both rescues so the current owner is unsure if they are working or show lines. Do these look like working line dogs? I have young kids in my house so I’m trying to decide if this puppy would be a good fit for our family. She will be 8+ weeks old when we receive her.

Health Advice My Golden is grieving the loss of her best mate. Advice???

Post image
3.1k Upvotes

My girl Nash whom is nearly 1 years old lost her best friend Rusty a 3 year old Cavoodle. It was sudden and unexpected. It’s been about a week and she is so sad. Isn’t eating properly, not her usual energetic self and is still looking around the house for him occasionally whimpering. She didn’t even want her favourite treat. She’s been very out of sorts when we’ve gone to the shops or left her alone for a short period (which I get having had a friend her entire life).

Does anyone have advice? It’s been tough to lose a dog and then see the other so heart broken!

The household is heavy so whether she’s picked up on that energy. Either way it truly seems like she’s taking it the worst.

Thanks in advance

Health Advice Bump on my Pup?

Post image
53 Upvotes

I MAYYYYY be overreacting a little bit, but I’m a vet student, and as someone who knows how Golden’s are cancer vessels i thought I’d consult the experts (the general public of Reddit). My 1 1/2 year old red field Golden’s nose has slowly turned from black to a light brown. This has happened over the last month-ish since we moved to Scotland. It’s SUPER cute and I’ve seen this happen in other red dogs. I just thought maybe the weather change and her aging caused it. Now that’s not the weird part…what has me concerned is that over the last two days I’ve noticed a bump developing on her nose. It’s not a cystic feeling bump or anything that seems to be from trauma. It feels almost like another layer of bone has grown just caudally from the fleshy part of her nose. I know that bony growths=BAD so now I’ve convinced myself that something has gone horribly wrong. I should note that when I touch it she doesn’t seem to mind at all or act like it pains her. I have noticed her shaking her head more and scratching at her face but she has a history of bad itchy ears. Any thoughts feelings and for once opinions about health matters are welcomed…thank you🥹
