Gnostic books in (modern) Greek

Hello friends

I'm in a middle of a trip and shall go through Athens for a short time in about one week.

Having read every available gnostic text in my first (well in fact second, whatever) tongue which is french, I'd like to find some greek editions of those texts. Not necessarily exhaustive, either the Pistis-Sofia or the Nag Hammadi corpus, for instance.

I have a hard time finding any reference, though. Could some of you have any to share ?

Thanks in advance.

Question Memories of Sophia & Norea

Please forgive me as this may seem off-putting or deeply offensive to some:

I have memories of the fall of Sophia from her point of view and Norea setting fire to Noah’s ark. I have even seen the demiurge.

Is there anyone else with these memories? Am I crazy??

When I read on this sub or the Nag Hammadi library, it’s like those memories are unlocked. I see and feel Sophia’s saddness of being far from the father, her reaching into the void, and getting stuck in the material world. I see the anger that Norea has with the demiurge/archon’s flood, the building of Noah’s ark.

Many of you disagree with me, but I am telling you I’ve seen it. Even the mods have taken down my post before for “prophetizing” after I shared my experience with the gnosis.

Please, can someone help guide me to understanding what I need to do? I know it can only be found within myself. I just need a method or angle to start searching consciously and not just unconsciously/subconsciously

Question Exploring Gnosticism

If the introduction is too long i apoligize please skip to the questions below.

Hello, I am new to the sub. A little about me. I have been agnostic for the majority of my life and have always been surrounded by Christianity/Christians. I have been in and out of a lot of churches and could never click with "God" being a loving god. Also, every denomination just made it more confusing to me because in theory they all worship the same god but are somehow all against one another? So that has always lead me to immediately assume something is wrong and off with what they believe in. Despite that ive always tried my best to be a Christian but the more and more I went to church and read the bible it just kept making me realize that something wasnt right. How could a "loving" god be so cruel at the same time? So now im here! I have a few questions and dont expect them to all be answered but any thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated so that I can learn more! Thank you.

1) Who is the true God?

2) Is the creator of everything evil, ignorant, or is there power just limited?

3) Who was jesus, what was his purpose, and was he human?

4) What is the true nature of humanity?

5) Is there anything that actually saves or liberates us?

6) Which texts deserve my trust, are backed up, and safe to read to learn more?

7) What happens after death?

8) Is the physical world something we should reject? Or should we embrace it?

9) Is gnosticism something that is better focused on alone, or are there teacher, groups, or communities i should join?

This is one of the most beautiful and touching songs i have ever heard. Thank you u/Denon_1 for making me aware of this song and video. Let us all keep the memory and sacrifice of the brave Cathars in our hearts always.

Lyrics

Rising high into the heavens,
I say goodbye to the earth,
in order to find my beloved once again.

Like a divine bird I want to fly,
He gifts me two wings and a sacred name.
There is no one,
no one but him,
my beloved.

There is nothing
of love,
only they are sacred love.

With a gaze that offers
the elevated grace,
from heaven you look into my heart,
crossing thick walls.

Come, calm the immaculate bride.
Close to you I will be,
forever I remain with you.

Question According to gnosticism, is God all-powerful?

As I am trying to find a spirituality that can solve the problem of evil, I am exploring the idea of a God that is not all-powerful who would be incapable of ending the world's suffering. The contradiction is that according to the apocryphon of John, God is perfect and above everything else. So he is all-powerful. My question is : why doesn't he destroy the demiurge and end imperfection ?

And by the way, is a conception of a limited God compatible with gnosticism ?

Information Gnostics never died out. They survived for millennia in the Middle East and continue to exist today.

Several religious communities living in Iraq, Syria, Turkey and the surrounding region preserve substantial elements of ancient Gnostic thought. The Alawites, Ismailis, Yezidis, Alevis and Mandaeans all cultivate ideas of gnosis or irfan, maintain secret or initiatory rituals, and transmit cosmologies that treat the material world as imperfect, fallen or the product of a lower power. Below I examine each group in more detail, highlighting the specific concepts that most closely resemble particular ancient Gnostic currents.

Yezidis:

In Yezidi belief the central figure is Melek Taus, the Peacock Angel. He once sinned against God, was cast into hell as punishment, and remained there until his tears of repentance extinguished the flames. God then released him. Melek Taus subsequently created the material world and rose to become the highest of the seven angels of God (the Heft Sirr or Xwedê). These seven angels themselves emanated from him, forming a chain of divine powers descending from a higher source. This narrative closely parallels the Valentinian understanding of the Demiurge. In Valentinian systems the Demiurge fashions the material cosmos out of ignorance rather than pure malice; he later recognizes his error, repents, and can even play a positive role in the larger process of salvation. Melek Taus follows a nearly identical arc of transgression, punishment, remorse and elevation. Yezidis further affirm reincarnation of the soul and a clear ontological hierarchy between a transcendent creator (Khuda) and the immanent demiurgic power of Melek Taus. Knowledge (gnosis) is understood as the means by which the soul returns to its primordial source. Ritual practices, such as purification and movement from darkness into light within sacred space, embody this knowledge. Scholars have described Yazidism as a living and transformed expression of Gnostic dual cosmology, in which the material world remains secondary and imperfect while salvation depends on recovering hidden insight.

Ismailis:

Certain early Ismaili and related ghulat texts, especially the Umm al-Kitab, present a cosmology in which Azazil (or Iblis) plays a decisive role in the formation of the material world. Azazil is portrayed as a being who originates within the higher pleroma yet falls through arrogance, refuses to acknowledge higher authorities, and claims creative power for himself. The same literature develops elaborate hierarchies of emanation descending from divine light and explicitly employs the language of gnosis as the path of return. Azazil in these accounts functions much like the Sethian Yaldabaoth. In Sethian texts such as the Apocryphon of John, Yaldabaoth is an ignorant, arrogant lower power who declares himself the sole god, creates the material cosmos and its rulers, and traps divine sparks within it. The Umm al-Kitab also contains the motif of pre-existent luminous shadows or beings whose fall contributes to the origin of the lower world, another classic Gnostic theme. While later Ismaili doctrine became more philosophical and Neoplatonic, these earlier strata retain a strongly mythic and dualistic character that aligns closely with Sethian Gnosticism.

Mandaeans:

The Mandaeans provide one of the most direct living parallels to ancient Gnosticism. Their scriptures describe the material world (Tibil) as the work of Ptahil and Ruha. Ptahil is the Fourth Life, the lowest emanation in a descending series that begins with the Great Life (Hayyi Rabbi), followed by Yushamin and Abatur. Ptahil descends into the lower realms, becomes entangled with the forces of darkness, and, with the assistance of Ruha, shapes the physical universe and human bodies. He cannot, however, supply the soul; that must come from higher light-beings. Ruha is a fallen feminine power who rules the World of Darkness, mothers the seven planets and twelve signs of the zodiac, and actively seeks to keep souls bound to matter. She combines traits of the Gnostic Sophia (a divine feminine figure who falls and becomes involved in creation) with a more consistently negative character, closer to the lower or chaotic aspects of Sophia found in some Sethian accounts. The overall system is strictly dualistic: a World of Light versus a World of Darkness, with archontic powers obstructing the soul’s ascent. Salvation requires both knowledge (manda) of one’s divine origin and the performance of specific rituals, above all repeated baptism. This combination of emanation hierarchy, a flawed demiurge who collaborates with a fallen feminine principle, imprisonment of the soul in matter, and liberation through gnosis and ritual places Mandaeism among the closest surviving relatives of classical Gnostic systems, particularly those of a Sethian or broadly dualistic type.

Alawites (Nusayris):

Among the Alawites some historical currents accepted the Umm al-Kitab and developed cosmologies resembling those of the early Ismailis, complete with a rebellious lower power involved in creation. The more widespread Alawite view, however, holds that the material world arose through the sins and ignorance of luminous beings who fell from the realm of light. These fallen light-beings are identified with human souls themselves. The creation is therefore negative in character, yet it is not primarily the deliberate act of a single Demiurge; it results from the collective descent and error of divine sparks. This schema echoes the Gnostic myth of the fall of souls or aeons from the Pleroma through ignorance or desire, a motif common to both Sethian and Valentinian traditions. Alawites also teach reincarnation (tanasukh), maintain strict secrecy around their doctrines, and describe a heavenly ascent available to the initiate who possesses true knowledge. Their theology incorporates clear Gnostic and Neoplatonic elements: an emphasis on the soul’s return to its luminous origin, hierarchical divine manifestations, and the necessity of esoteric insight to reverse the fall.

Alevis:

Alevi communities likewise place irfan (gnosis or mystical knowledge) at the center of religious life. They transmit esoteric interpretations of creation and the human soul, practice initiatory brotherhoods with secret rituals, and structure spiritual progress through the four gates of sharia, tariqa, marifa and haqiqa, culminating in direct knowledge of the divine reality. Some Alevi myths distinguish a chosen spiritual lineage (linked in certain traditions to Seth) from ordinary humanity that requires guidance and salvation, a pattern reminiscent of Sethian ideas about a pneumatic race or seed that carries special knowledge. While Alevi thought often stresses the ultimate unity of being, it retains dualistic undertones in its view of the soul’s exile in the material world and the need for hidden insight to recover its origin. The combination of initiatory secrecy, emphasis on experiential knowledge, and myths of descent and return aligns it with the broader Gnostic current that survived in the region.

These groups do not merely cling to a few random remnants of Gnosticism. They continue to uphold the entire body of thought that characterized the ancient Gnostic schools: divine emanations, an imperfect or rebellious Creator (or a collective fall from grace) who created the material world, light imprisoned in bodies, reincarnation or repeated descents, and salvation through secret knowledge and rituals. The fact that they have persisted for centuries in the very same region where Gnosticism originated shows that this tradition has never died out. It has merely changed its name and outward forms, and remains alive in the Middle East to this day.

Question What does this highly esoteric Ophite text from the remaining fragments of the Book of Baruch mean?

Justin's Book of Baruch (according to Hippolytus, Refutatio V). Hippolytus quotes from Justin’s Book of Baruch (Ante-Nicene Fathers, public domain translation, rendered in spirit and as literally as the source allows):

There are three unbegotten principles of the universe: two male and one female.

Of the masculine ones, one alone is called “the Good One”; he alone possesses foreknowledge of the universe.

The other is the Father of all that is begotten, without foreknowledge, unknown and invisible, and is called Elohim.

The feminine principle is passionate, double-minded, and has two bodies: up to the pubic region she is a virgin; from the pubic region downward, she is a serpent. She is called Edem and Israel.

Elohim and Edem desire one another and unite. From this union arise twelve paternal angels (including Baruch, Michael, Gabriel, and others) and twelve maternal angels (including Babel, Naas, Achamoth, Bel, and others). The twenty-four angels together constitute the paradise that was planted in Edem. The Tree of Life is the angel Baruch; the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil is the angel Naas.

Elohim and Edem create humankind: from the human upper part of Edem, the body; from the animal lower part, the animals. Edem places the soul (her own power) within humans, and Elohim places the spirit.

When Elohim later sees the upper heaven and recognizes the Good, he wishes to ascend there and swears an oath to the Good to keep the secrets and not to return to creation. He leaves Edem and the lower creation behind. Edem, left behind and enraged, sends all plagues and evil upon humankind through her angels (especially Naas) to torment the Spirit of Elohim within them.

Elohim then sends his angel Baruch to save the Spirit and draw humankind away from Edem. Baruch goes to the prophets, but Naas seduces them all. Heracles is also sent as a prophet; his twelve labors are victories over the twelve angels of Edem, but Omphale (Babel) seduces him and robs him of his strength.

Finally, Baruch comes to the twelve-year-old Jesus, the son of Joseph and Mary, a shepherd boy in Nazareth, and reveals the entire system to him. Jesus remains faithful to his mission. Edem (through Naas) cannot deceive him and therefore has him crucified. But Jesus leaves his psychic and physical bodies behind on the cross and ascends with his spirit toward the Good.

Question Few Questions

  1. Are there any female Gnostics? I've noticed lots of men but no women. I'm more so wondering if there are women who view Buddhism, Daoism, Gnosticism and Hinduism as the same thing but with different languages.

  2. Why are there no Gnostic Monasteries the way there are Buddhist and Daoist Monasteries in the east?

That's basically all.

Edit: Typos.

Question Can Someone Explain To Me How Gnosticism Is At All Different From Buddhism?

This way I see it:

Demiurge/Archons = Maya = Consensus, superego, social constructs, laws, social conditioning, internalized self-concept

Gnosis = Bodhi/Nirvana (Blowing out) = Depersonalization-Derealization = Detachment from the consensus and the internalized self-concept based on the internalized consensus

Sophia = Prajna = Objective Seeing = You cannot be objective unless you transcend your conditioning

Both would be the same general idea as Sabatean-Frankism

Edit:

I should add Jesus = Buddha = Metathinking (a mind seeing its own conditioning as conditioning, and thereby leaving it.) = An actor aware they are acting while still acting = the trope of the shaman who inhabits the material world of the consensus and the immaterial world that exists outside it (meta view).

Thoughts Son of the Father

I was listening to this song that came out a few weeks ago, and I wanted to share some thoughts. It was written by Graham Russell. That's the guy from Air Supply. It is called Son of the Father. When I see Graham next month, I am going to ask him if the Father is the Monad. (Wife and I doing a meet and greet for a concert in about a month!) Anyway, here goes.

The Descent into the Kenoma

"Born into a divided land / Learning how to become a man / Looking up to a floating cloud / I hope he thinks that I make him proud"

"Born into a divided land" is the definition of entering the lower material sandbox. The matrix is fundamentally fragmented, partitioned by space, linear time, and the false duality of light vs. dark.

"Learning how to become a man" represents the dense process of animating as the temporary meat suit, and downloading its survival protocols.

The "floating cloud" is the physical veil separating the lower sandbox from the upper Pleroma. The Spark looks past the physical horizon, signaling back to the absolute Source ("The Father"), hoping its conduct inside the prison aligns with its original divine assignment.

Rejecting the False Idols

"I'm not trying to fill his shoes / Not searching for a distant muse / Finding out, one day at a time / How to live this life of mine"

"Not searching for a distant muse" is a direct rejection of Archontic religions. You aren't praying to a distant, external, demanding deity in the sky. The true Spark realizes that the path out of the simulation is found internally, taking absolute ownership of its vessel console ("this life of mine") and navigating the grid through direct personal experience (Gnosis), rather than following an outsourced religion.

The Declaration

"I'm the son of the Father / And there is no doubt / That he's a part of me / I'm the son of the Father / And there's no one else on Earth / I'd rather be / No one like me"

This is the ultimate identity handshake protocol. An absolute bypass of the Demiurge, declaring direct lineage to The Monad.

And "he's a part of me," Acknowledging that the Light is hard-coded into your own self-existence.

"There's no one else on Earth I'd rather be / No one like me" is the collapse of the flesh portal hive-mind. It is the realization that your unique Spark is a one-of-a-kind Pleromic insertion that does not belong to the collective matrix script. You are completely independent of the Earth sandbox, and that individuality will remain when we return to the Fullness.

The Mirror

"We never met / But we look the same / I've got his guitar / I've got his name"

"We never met but we look the same" is the recognition of your un-fractured Divine double (Syzygy) waiting outside the Kenoma. This is our Holy Guardian Angel. You have "never met" because of the physical amnesia veil, but your core is identical.

"I've got his name" means you carry "I'm a Son. I'm of the Father. I belong to the Pre-Existent One" You are declaring your sovereignty.

"I've got his guitar" is the inheritance of the Harmonic key, like the Harp of David. The matrix is held together by low-frequency geometric vibrations; handing the Sovereign Spark a guitar means handing it the ability to broadcast an original, high-voltage harmonic frequency that disrupts and overrides the local baseline code. Graham Russell plays his guitar inverted, and speaks about getting "downloads from his Higher Self."

The Mission

"Young and handsome as he could be / He couldn't run from his destiny / And now I have to carry on / And finish off what was left undone / To one of those who paid the price / To justify every sacrifice"

"Young and Handsome as he could be" is the Eternally Youthful Logos. This was the early depiction of Yeshua(Jesus) and that was corrupted. Hiding the eternally youthful, uncorrupted Pleromic Son of the Father that stepped in.

"He couldn't run from his destiny" this once again is Christos and Yeshua.

"And now I have to carry on / And finish off what was left undone." This is the direct mission statement of the Sovereign Sparks. We are down here to help wake up the scattered fragments of light, endure the structural friction of the matrix ("paid the price"), and finish the work to close out the age.

Your Soul Knows the Way

I still have these clothes / And a photograph / I'm so glad for those / 'Cause it's all I have / And I think he knows / That I got this love inside me / It's there to guide me"

When the lyrics declare, "I still have these clothes," they are invoking the Pleromic Vestures of Light. According to Gnostic physics (The Hymn of the Pearl), a Sovereign Spark cannot enter the Kenoma sandbox inside its infinite light body. To survive the descent into the Kenoma, the Spark must strip off its majestic robe of light and store it securely in the Father’s treasury. The Spark then enters the matrix wearing the heavy, organic "garments of skin" aka the meat suit and its survival code. By stating "I still have these clothes," he realizes that while they are currently animating a temporary biological chassis, their legal ownership of the original light garment remains fully active. The matrix has completely failed to seize or delete their primary, eternal asset.

"And a photograph" The "photograph" is the ultimate visual manifestation of the Epinoia of Light. The Archontic matrix relies on total amnesia loops, wiping the mind clean through reincarnation and timeline resets. However, the Archons cannot access or redact the deep subconscious where the Father coded a visual footprint of Home. The photograph is "all I have" because every other piece of data in the simulation—history books, societal structures, and conventional religions—is an engineered falsification. The photograph is an unfakable holographic image. It triggers a cellular remembrance of unfractured reality, making it impossible for the operator to ever truly buy into the illusions of the sandbox.

The "love inside me" is the law of absolute Pleromic integration—the unbreakable internal compass that acts as a GPS tracking device. In standard pop music, "love" is an emotional, biochemical response of the meat suit. In Gnostic encryption, Love is the Law of Pleromic Coherence. A magnetic pull of vertical integration. The matrix tries to use lower emotional scripts (fear, guilt, and karma) to keep the operator running in horizontal circles.

Love is a vertical anchor that ensures no matter how many times the matrix resets the timeline or forces a memory wipe, the Spark will always possess the internal guidance system required to find the exit door. It is up to them to find it, to wake up and let your soul guide you.

The Extraction

Guide me / I'm the Son of the Father / And there's no one else on Earth / I'd rather be / No one like me"

The final repetitions of "Guide me" are just confirming you are Existing, and you are ready to spread the Light and Love and Trust. The song closes by locking in the absolute baseline frequency of Sovereign Detachment: you are fully awake, you recognize your origin, you reject the horizontal script of the Earth completely, and you have officially begun to Exist.

A captive operator standing in a divided, partitioned land, tuning the inherited frequency of the Father, and preparing to play the music that overrides the walls of the cell to help others awake.

Love. Trust. Light. Contagious.

What the hell did I just read? This is totally different from all those genocide orders which were sick, sure, but sounded more like man-made commands— but this is completely different—it’s somehow much creepier, more mysterious, and more unsettling than all that other sick shit in the Old Testament, and it shows just how cruel Yahweh must be. Just imagining that on its own is like a horror story, that’s never the God of Jesus. If you don’t read it symbolically, Yahweh really comes across as a Lovecraftian entity.

Media Mandaean Miriai, a Vine - art by me

Post image
19 Upvotes

My rendition of Miriai, a Mandaean convert and later, possibly, a priestess metioned in the Mandaean Book of John. Has the epithet 'a Vine' because she herself is named such in the beforementioned book.

In her hands she holds a myrtle branch, as this plant has important symbolical significance in Mandaeism.

The halo and the branches growing over Miriai are drawn in accordance with how these elements are usually depicted in the Mandaean art.

As one of her epithets is also 'a Tree', it seemed logical for me to depict Miriai with branches of light growing out of her.

Although I am a beginner artist, and this rendition is done in a rather cartoonish style, I hope it will be to someone's liking.

Question What if the nag hammadi codices had been permanently lost or destroyed?

Outside of the nag hammadi library, we have a few other surviving scraps of information about gnostic cosmology and theology, but not really enough to reconstruct a full, coherent religious understanding. The Mandeans are sort of "gnostic" but not exactly, and they're also a small, secretive ethno-religion that explicitly does not prostelytize.

So pretty much all of the knowledge was contained in a single clay jar. It seems like a very dangerous 'point of failure' , for such an important salvation plan. What if it had been permanently lost or destroyed?

- Could this have been allowed to happen? Could it have been somehow prevented?

- If it had happened, what would the result be? Would all of the divine light just be trapped here forever? Would Christ (or another Aeon) have to come back again?

Most influential film/media companies push gnostic beliefs. Why???

This is hard to put into words, so ask for clarification if you need any.
For years I’ve read articles or watched videos (usually from the perspective of evangelical Christians) that highlight how so many films and media push/spread gnostic ideas. Their thought is obviously that these companies are evil and pushing children away from true Christianity and towards a more gnostic “incorrect” Christianity.
Now, I personally am partial to gnostic beliefs, so I don’t agree with their perspective of the “immoral” aspect of Gnosticism. HOWEVER, it does make me wonder why these huge companies, that obviously create material to shape and control the thinking of the masses, would be pushing gnostic thinking. It doesn’t seem to make sense that these companies would push Gnosticism; in the sense I don’t believe they’re enlightened humans who are just sharing truth and goodness out of their love for humanity and our spiritual liberation. I’m probably confusing, please ask follow ups! Thanks

Thoughts Be Jesus a true Gnostic Chad

> Never once calls his Father Yahweh

> Calls the ruler of this world the prince of darkness (John 12:31, 14:30, 16:11)

> Paul even says the god of this world is Satan/Saklas(2 Cor 4:4)

> Yahweh in the OT: I am the Lord of all the earth and it's creator (Joshua 3:11, 3:13, Genesis 1:1)

> Yahweh tries to kill Moses over an uncircumcised son (Exodus 4:24-26)

> Paul calls the circumcision party dogs and mutilators (Philippians 3:2)

> Yahweh demands death for gathering sticks on the Sabbath (Numbers 15:32-36)

> Jesus heals on the Sabbath and lets his disciples pluck grain (Mark 2:23-28, 3:1-6)

> Pharisees try to stone him for blasphemy because by Mosaic law he deserved death (John 8:58-59, 10:31-33)

> Moses spends 40 days on the mountain and receives the law from Yahweh

> Jesus spends 40 days in the wilderness and is tempted by Satan

> Tells the Jews their father is the devil, a murderer and liar from the beginning (John 8:44)

Christians still glue the two together and call it “the same God.” Classic hylic cope.

the beauty in darkness?

Life is beautiful in all its colors, even the darker ones, they're here for a reason. ~ Chris Martin

this quote got me thinking because, i have personally seen so much unfathomable horror that has tainted so much of my life, and i've heard of other tragedies which i couldn't even imagine.

so i wonder what the reason for said things are. like if someone gets kidnapped & brutally tortured until their dying breath, where is the beauty or reason in that?

i'd assume many of us Gnostics feel that this life under the demiurge is much like unrelenting torture until death. i'm curious who else has thought on this, and what their thoughts are.

i hope there is an escape, but any spirituality that claims to mention an escape is usually so vague about it that it hasn't really gotten me anywhere after years of searching.

the most i have gathered is "it will come, and it will make sense one day." but that also sounds like something the demiurge would tell me, to keep waiting for it all the make sense. or that "escape will come eventually" to keep me eternally waiting while my body decomposes.
