Positive induction! FTM

Hi mamas! I was terrified going into my induction. I wanted to post this for any first time moms who read hundreds of horror stories looking for insurance. I went it October 14th to start my induction at 3pm. After admission we started cervical ripening I was 1cm dilated already and cervix was pretty soft. The plan was to do a dose of miso every 2 hours up until 3am and start pitocin at 7am.
Baby’s heart was not tolerating the mediation very well so we decided to stop at the second dose, contractions starting picking up really fast and babygirl wasn’t getting a break. Baby kept jumping off the monitor so they put me in hands and knees position and shortly after , my water had broke on its own. They checked me and I was already 3-4 cm dilated. They moved me into the labor room and again my contractions picked up fast. We did 2 doses of IV meds before calling for epidural. Around 5cm I caved, got my epidural and took the best 2 hour nap. I woke up to the intense feeling of pressure and started feeling slight pain, I was 9cm !! I pushed for only 20 minutes. 9 pushes , sadly I did get a third degree tear. Baby girl had a 2 vessel cord, with marginal insertion and I had gestational diabetes. She was 7 pounds 3 ounces and came out with perfect sugars! It’s normal to be scared, but mama we are so made for this! The fear went away the second I started laboring. Good luck!! Check in time 3pm October 14th, and was born 6:20 am on October 15th!

Advice Wanted Don’t know if I can trust my numbers now…

• Upvotes

Hello! I’ve been diagnosed with GDM since week 28. I am currently 35+6 and I am diet controlled so no insulin. My fasted numbers have been under target 95% of the time. I’ve bunkered down with my diet and found ways to treat myself without insane spikes, although there was a learning curve where I did have some spikes here and there early on.
My issue today is like this: I have pregnancy insomnia where I wake up anywhere between 2:30-4:30am. I am usually up for about 1-2 hours before going back to sleep and waking up at 9:30am. I have never thought to test when waking up that early because I figured if I went back to sleep it I could just test when I woke up. I usually eat dinner between 5:30-6:30pm and I don’t always have an appetite for a bedtime snack.

So this morning I decided to test my fasted sugar after waking up at 4:30am and it was 5.1 which is under the 5.3 threshold my clinic gave me. But the funny thing is for the past while my fasted sugars have been closer to 4.3-4.8, never reaching anywhere close to 5 (when I test after waking up at my usual time). So I am wondering if I had false lows because I was fasting for longer since I would wake up later? I hope this all makes sense. I’m just worried I’ve given myself a false sense of security with my lower readings and haven’t gotten an accurate picture of my fasted sugars… 🫩

Advice Wanted Meal ideas

I'm sick of eating eggs and chicken, what else can I eat? The doctor stopped me from eating rice and potatoes. I go to work and I get EXTREMELY hungry after every two hours. I was taking veggies with me but now they gross me out too.

What are some good snacking options? I'm injecting insulin 3 times a day and it makes me so hungry I could eat anything and everything 😭😭😭

Mistakes were made... idk what to do...

Update: By 3.5 hours it was under the 140 and stayed under. Yall dont skip meals and snacks.

I'm going to watch my numbers tomorrow and if I have another spike above the 140, I'll call in asap.

Currently panicking and not sure what to do.

I ate breakfast around 10am, sugars did their normal thing.

I had a hair appointment that went for 7 hours and I didn't think to bring a snack because somehow I thought it would be like 4 hours and ended up being much longer and I wasn't looking at the time. 🙃

Didn't eat until just after 5pm. Sugar was 85 when I started eating. Was at 180 1hr after eating. Spiked up to 197 and at 2 hours its 169 and that's where I'm sitting.

I've had GD since 11 weeks and I'm 27 weeks now and this is the worst I've spiked and its stayed sustained.

I've been on 2, 15 min walks. Went until my leg pain started (yay siatica)

Drank a bunch of water.

Tried to distract myself because I know stress makes it go up too.

I got Culvers... deluxe burger, no bun with small fries and like 5 spoonfuls of a mixer. I feel so guilty and now I'm spiraling.

Any tips on getting my sugar down quick??

Obimet SR 500 mg - Is it safe to take in pregnancy?

My doc recommended me to take Obimet SR 500 mg - 1 tablet a day. I’m in my 37th week of pregnancy and my glucose levels are slightly high. Want to understand if this is a commonly recommended medicine and do people take this?

Advice Wanted Lower Numbers after 3 weeks

Im found out I had gestational diabetes at 29w4. I’ve been managing it with a diet and so far have done great. I had a couple spikes the first week when i wanted a burger with a bun or when i chose to have a brownie with dinner. After that i buckled in and started to get good number. This week I feel like my numbers are maybe too good?

I decided to try and test the limits and see what was and wasn’t working. I had hashbrowns with breakfast (105), half a box of macaroni and cheese and a protein shake for dinner (104), a cupcake 2hrs after dinner and (96)? My fasting numbers are also going down. The average was 91 last week and 85 now. Post meal glucose average went from 99 to 88.

I’m honestly confused cause while i’m making healthy choices I don’t really understand the drop, i mean im getting numbers in the 70’s post meal. Is this big of an improvement normal? I’ve only been diet managing for 3 weeks. Some additional info, I do have a marginal cord insertion and my baby is measuring 23rd percentile. Not sure if it’s relevant but I did read that placenta failure can happen with gestational diabetes and it’s also a risk with an MCI so i thought i’d add it.

Support Requested 3-hour glucose fail

Feeling very sad and disappointed in myself, I failed my 1 hour with a 161 and just got the results from my 3 hour. Fasting was 86, 1 hour was 202, 2 hour was 158, and 3 hour was 112.
I’ve always been very cautious of what I eat and avoiding things that’ll spike my blood sugar, and basically eating a low glycemic diet besides the occasional sweet treat after dinner. I know this wasn’t necessarily my fault but I just can’t kept feeling like it is and I’m failing my baby.

My test was yesterday and I logged on to the lab portal this morning and saw them uploaded but my dr hasn’t called me yet.

I’m also nervous this is going to interfere with my plans of going unmedicated with little to no interventions.

Fasting won’t got lower

ive been diagnosed for two months and never had a fasting below 112. None of my after meals are ever high, like consistently in the 80s after meals. They put me on insulin (20 units) but it’s never low. they want to send me to an endocrinologist, but I don’t want to do that. we have the growth scan Monday, but so far every scan he hasn’t been measuring big at all. Is there a way to get my fasting under control without adding another doctor?

General Info Positive Induction Stories

FTM, on insulin overnight and diet controlled during the day. Diagnosed at 28 weeks and baby has been measuring on track at both the 32 and 36 week ultrasounds. Due to the overnight insulin, my OB is opting for a 38 week induction. There are so many stories/experiences out there and the negative ones/bad experiences always stick out and I'm hoping to have some positive stories to help prepare. I know everyone is so different, but as this is my first baby and GDM has already been a journey, I'm hoping to have some positive vibes going into my induction!

Just diagnosed… what’s next?

I was just diagnosed with GD. My numbers were soooo close (except the first hour) so I was hopeful, but nope. My doc says I’ll need to meet with a “diabetes educator” for next steps. I’m just wondering what that looked like for everyone? What should I expect?y my anxiety thrives on the unknown, so some experiences of others on what comes next would be helpful! Along with recommendations on how to still enjoy life with the upcoming holidays and treats 😭

Advice Wanted Confusion about 2 hour levels

Hi all! I just got diagnosed with gestational diabetes this week. My doctor called me over the phone to let me know I failed the 3 hour test, and she will send a referral to a diabetes dietitian to meet with. The dietician called me earlier this week to set up an appointment, but unfortunately I can’t be seen for another 2 weeks. In the meantime, they told me that I should be logging when I eat and tracking my glucose levels 2 hours after a meal. They said the target number is 140.

I am confused because everything I’ve seen on this subreddit and the internet says the number should be 120 2 hours after eating and 140 1 hour after eating. Since I only talked to the front desk lady, I called back to confirm she said 140 2 hours after and she said yes that is what the dietician told her. Could that be right? I’m feeling stressed not knowing for sure what number to aim for when I’m getting conflicting information. Thanks in advance!

Advice Wanted Glucose intolerance

I failed my 1hr glucose test so I took the 3hr and fasting was good, 1hr was elevated to 189, 2hr was normal at 139, and 3hrs was 70. Wondering if anyone is in this subreddit that has had a similar diagnosis and how your second half of pregnancy went? When I take my fasting and 1hr at home it’s always normal (fasting is elevated on occasion because I take chewy tums for heartburn which breaks the fast)

Advice Wanted Unusual readings (Canada)

My readings have been on the low end of normal since taking my glucose by finger at home.

I definitely have gestational diabetes. I am not taking insulin but my baby is growing too big for his gestational age. I had gestational diabetes with my last pregnancy and now I have it again and probably had it even earlier than I did with my first.

I was hoping to take medication but based on the readings I'm getting by poking my finger, I'm on the low end of the range?

Has this happened to anyone else? I'm doing my readings 2 hours after eating. Should I test my glucose one hour to check for spikes?

Thanks.

If you have a Dexcom G7 or a continuous monitor - do you still do finger pricks?

I was diagnosed less than 24 hours ago so I'm still feeling really new to all of this. The finger pricks have been manageable so far but the idea of constantly pricking multiple times a day for the next 15 weeks or so seems a bit daunting. I'd prefer to get a continuous monitor but I've seen online that some people who have a cont monitor still opt for finger pricks. What do you do and why?

Holidays coming up with GD

Hello FTM I was diagnosed with GD at 27 weeks now I’m 32 and have been diet controlled so far. I have had occasional fasting spikes but having a snack before bed seems to be keeping those under control now. I am looking for advice on meals to eat with Thanksgiving coming up? I have quite a few parties in November and just looking for some ideas on how to navigate it besides just the turkey. Thanks!

PSA for beans!

Eat beans, everyone said. They’re high in fiber and regulate your blood sugar, they said.

Well here I am celebrating my amazing post-meal numbers after adding black beans to my dinner…….but my body forgot how bad they give me gas😂

Painful trapped gas in my third trimester body or good post-meal numbers….. hmmmm…. LOL

What can I expect for fasting numbers?

I haven’t been officially diagnosed yet because I haven’t been able to see my doctor or a RD after having the three hour test (I have to wait 2 more weeks, yikes) but I’ve noticed my fasting numbers slowly increasing. I’m at 26/27 weeks, got the test at 24 weeks.

My fasting numbers were 87-88 and now they’re consistently 91-92. The only change I’ve made is adding a bedtime snack and testing at 9-10 hours instead of 11-12.

Am I just doomed to see them keep increasing from here on out until I need insulin? What was your experience like? I know I’m early on in this journey and I don’t have anyone else to ask except Chat lol. I need all the help I can get until I see my doc! My post-meal numbers are always within range.

How strictly are we testing?

Are we setting up a timer the minute that first bite goes into your mouth or is ChatGPT over complicating stuff for me? I’m sure 5-10 minutes over is acceptable. What do you guys think?

Edit: I think being very strict with timing is stressing me a lot but I also don’t want to record incorrectly.

General Info Positive Induction Stories Only!!

First, I just want to start by saying that between insulin at night for fasting numbers, and diet controlled during the day, little beeb came down from 90th percentile to 70th in 1 month! I am now no longer being considered for a C-section at 38 weeks :) her abdomen went from 98th percentile down to 93rd and is expected to continue to improve over the next 2-3 weeks. I am 36 weeks today, and getting scheduled for induction in my 39th week. They won’t let me go because of being on insulin and the GD diagnosis. I want to hear how much you loved being induced and why it was easy/right for you! This isn’t to diminish negative experiences, but those negative experiences seem to be the loudest and stick out the most. I’d love to go naturally before the induction date, but this is my first so it’s less likely.

Advice Wanted If you don’t monitor everyday, how hard is it to stick to the plan?

Hello, I’m 33w diagnosed 3 weeks ago. Based on my numbers in the first ten days I was advised to monitor my blood sugar just 4 days a week. I continued to monitor every day because I was still figuring out what worked and didn’t work and I love data.

However my next appointment isn’t for 12 days and now I only have 2 days left of test strips 🙈

So I need to buy them out of pocket (and they are expensive ) and I gotta actually ration them, can’t be testing every day at this rate.

If you don’t have to monitor every day is it difficult to not have a little extra carbs or a small sweet treat you normally wouldn’t?

I feel the threat of monitor keeps me on track.

Advice Wanted Conflicting information on induction for GD reasons.

Hi everyone, currently 39 weeks and this is my first time around with gestational diabetes. Fortunately I’ve been entirely diet controlled with very few numbers out of range (less than 10% the entire pregnancy most occurring the week I was sick) my doctors have said I have a very mild case that is doing really well. I feel very lucky in that respect.

Last week at my 38 week appointment the doctor said things are so well controlled he sees no reason to induce before 40 weeks and is comfortable letting me go to my due date before discussing induction for sometime before I were to hit 41 weeks. I was on board with this plan given I would like to go naturally. The women in my family have a history of lightning fast labors- my first baby my entire labor from first contraction to holding him was 5 hours and we expect this one will be a bit shorter so I’d like to avoid induction if possible and just let me body do its thing. I was encouraged to hear the doctor felt this was a feasible plan for me.

Today I went in for a BPP and NST. Baby passed both with flying colors, 8/8 no issues or concerns. However when I was there one if the midwives wanted to discuss scheduling an induction. I told her the doctor I saw last week said no need I am well controlled and he’s comfortable waiting until after my due date. She pulled up my chart notes from my very first GD consult with MFM and said well it’s right here that it’s recommended to be induced by your due date. I pushed back a little just noting that recommendation was made as a blanket recommendation in the beginning before we even had any BGs to evaluate or assessment on how my diabetes would go or is going versus the doctor last week who has assessed my whole case now that we’re towards the end. I just asked her like okay, so whose advice do I follow? The midwife simply said she would go by what MFM put in the chart back when I was 27 weeks. I said okay so what if we schedule it for the 24th (day after she’s due) so in the event she doesn’t arrive by her due date, I can be induced. She let me know it doesn’t work like that they would float 3 possible days next week leading up to my due date and then the hospital would choose one that is open. So I would be induced leading up to my due date instead of on or after it. I felt like this would be cheating myself out of 3 potential days I could go into labor naturally, but she said unfortunately that’s just how it works.

I understand both sides of things, the initial recommendation but then also the more recent advisement that I can wait. What I’m not sure of is what to do. The midwife just said it’s really up to me. I’m going to discuss it with my partner when he gets home, but I’m just wondering if anyone else has had any experience with this sort of thing.

If baby was doing totally fine and you were diet controlled were you pushed to induce still? Or did you just wait it out and go naturally? Just looking for some thoughts and experiences.
