Modelling clearly shows land value tax is more equitable/progressive than council rates (UK šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§)

Full details with the methodology and explanations at Policy Engine.

Its clear the the current council rates are regressive and a change to land value tax is more progressive/equitable. As seen on the second-last slide there are a minority of occupants that are worse off, and likely a smaller minority that require defferrals to help them. But the overall change is an improvement.

Which countries would most benefit from Georgism?

Some counties have extremely high home prices vs income, and the necessary conditions to support national LVT. Which ones should immediately implement it?

Designing a thriving society on a thriving planet - Jeremy Lent

Podcast with Jeremy Lent, tech CEO turned author, about the idea behind his new book Ecocivilization: how we can redesign our economy, democracy and technology so everyone can thrive.

Covers:

  • Why, despite the many problems of our civilization, saying it’s ā€œmalfunctioningā€ isn’t accurate
  • Why typical metrics of progress like GDP don’t provide a full picture of how people are actually doing
  • How we can design a better society for everyone taking inspiration from how ecosystems work
  • Ideas to improve our democratic systems, with real world examples
  • How we could distribute wealth more widely, from ownership of companies to the benefits of AI

Question Whydont we build up?

I might be in the wrong sub but i see buildings here and questions about architecture and zones so

Ill ask because i always wonder

Why.

We keep expanding citys out and i guess its cheaper but it just costs supply chain times if i had to guess.

Skyscrapers are popular city ornaments and most today are half empty unless explicityly used for apartments.

But other than that, we just have a bunch of wasted airspace thats unused. We complain about parking lots taking up space or even forests and suburbs

But we should build up, everywhere.

If you say "oh well elevators"

Elevators are no issue, theres freight , commercial, and civil weighted elevators all of which can go to certain heights, and if the heights the issue, create a revolving staircase of those elevators, problem solved.

If sway is the issue, have you tried stabilizing the top using cables? Or, making the design itself stable or not a wall to the wind.

"What about real estate val"

Who cares? The future certainly doesnt give a shit about whether or not you will be able to buy a copy paste suburb house or a brick mid city tiny block home.

In Different Terms: With the Median Mid Career Salary of an Ivy League Graduate, one would literally be borderline house poor when purchasing a median priced home today (even worse when you look at HCOL concentration)

Question Why is land value so high in South Korea?

According to Lars Doucet, land value in Korea is currently 500%, and over a 50 year period, has ranged from 400-600%. So why is land in South Korea so valuable? It can’t be just density, because while dense, it’s not the most dense country, nor is it the most dense high income country, being beaten out by the Netherlands and Taiwan.

Edit: sorry, I thought I included it, but 500% of GDP. Here’s the link to the post by Lars Doucet that I was referencing: https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/does-georgism-work-five-years-later

Alot of bad faith arguments here. I honestly think he is trying to ragebait by how much he is cooking up weird situations where LVT is not suppose to work. Also, does not even touch the other Georgist policies either. Laser focused on LVT and whiffs.

Meme Back in the day Georgists often used to ask "do you see the cat" which is to say that once you read the theory behind it you saw how it applied everywhere. So I made the cat a bit bigger!

For some context, this "new law" the title mentions is a policy proposal by the Opportunity Party, a non-incumbent New Zealand political party participating in the upcoming 2026 general election. It is not a law, because it has neither been passed or is about to be passed.
