Still just 4k60 output though...

tbh that’s all I need. I only play story games

u/DermisCronJob 1d ago

That’s the max output for the cinematic preset anyway

What is this "cinematic preset" I keep hearing mentioned. I don't see it in any game settings or or in GeForce now app settings on either my Shield TV or Logitech Gcloud. Is it because my Shield TV and Gcloud have sort of proprietary GeForce Now apps and not the standard platform versions available on Android/Android TV?

Thank you for the explanation. Looks like I'm going to have to be satisfied with just the normal compression at 4k. I'm sure it looks better with h.265 and I do wish I had VRR, but I've been able to get pretty good fidelity and a consistent 60fps using in game limiter on most games I've wanted to play with maxed settings and DLSS set to "quality"

That’s misinformation though. You need to check the Oracle website that Nvidia uses for support info about Geforce Now:

https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5390/~/how-do-i-enable-hdr10%2C-10-bit-color-precision%2C-or-yuv-4%3A4%3A4-with-my-geforce-now

It’s written down in the manual extremely clearly! Read it before spreading false information folks!

Furthermore the docs clearly state: “NOTE: YUV 4:4:4 is currently not supported with AV1 encoding.”

As AV1 does not support streaming in the full resolution, H265 is the highest quality option!

I actually have the Cinematic toggle in my Nvidia shield tv GeForce now app. I didn't realize it's further at the top as I always have it on custom. I noticed when I use cinematic the stream frames will actually dip below 60 and try to sync up with the game frames. Is this some sort of built-in VRR in Cinematic mode that triggers regardless? I didn't think this was possible, as my displays are all 60hz without VRR and I never really see the stream frames divert from 60 unless my ping spikes momentarily with network traffic.

What’s the utilization of the video encode / decode engine of your GPU?

This shows up in GPU-Z or Task Manager in Window, but idk about Linux.

VRR is a display feature. But the frame rate may vary if your client can’t keep up also. It doesn’t sound like you’re overloading the GeForce Now instance, but you can lower the settings (not resolution or frame rate) as a quick sanity check.

Also, are you sure it’s not network related?

To know for sure, you need to cross diagnose the causes, until you can positively identify the problem.

2

u/JoeyJabroni 22h ago

It definitely shouldn't be network related. It's gigabit Ethernet with 300mb down/up. It might just be anomalies with the Witcher 3 remastered itself. DLSS frame gen does nothing and my in-game render frame rate won't go above 60 without v-sync or any limit imposed. Similarly, not even bumping the graphics to the lowest settings would make it go above 60. By chance, I switched the display setting from "borderless window" to windowed then to full screen and suddenly something kicked on and the image was more vibrant and detailed. I also lost most of the frame rate and can only get above 60 with ray tracing using fsr frame gen. It seemed like something was locking it up at 1080p and 60fps with really dim picture quality. Even the gamma and hdr settings seemed way off in comparison now. Toggling the display window options seems to unstick it.

You’re 100% right on that. Bad devices (bad IoT, weird routers, MacOS) can go awry.

I’m sure you’ve already checked the Game Session Diagnostic Tool on GeForce Now if everything actually worked as it should? But just double checking?

If you mind trying again for us, what does it report?

1

u/conspicuousxcapybara 21h ago

As far as I know the in-fps is unrelated to the streaming stuff, your local client, etc. Instead that just seems to be the framerate the cloud instance can render at.

How does it perform with other games?

I wouldn’t generally use frame gen btw, because that also happens as part of the encoding process anyways. And it inherently adds lag, something you’d want to minimize with cloud gaming.

My M1 MacBook Air does that with the right dongle.

It doesn’t make sense to require both AV1 and H265 decode right?

Only H265 is used in cinematic mode. Check the support docs:

“NOTE: YUV 4:4:4 is currently not supported with AV1 encoding.”

It really doesn’t matter at all that Macs before the M3 don’t support AV1, because that’s the power quality option, not used in ‘cinematic mode’

I can’t stand the misinformation here. Read the manual folks!

1

u/matty_fu 1d ago

60fps is the max output for cinematic?

1

u/JoeyJabroni 1d ago

That's all my TV can handle anyway. That seems to be limits of GeForce now also with newer titles and ray tracing enabled.

2

u/mymarkis666 1d ago

Nah I’m doing 120 fps with iPad Pro on the new gears of war game with full raytracing and ludicrous graphics settings

1

u/JoeyJabroni 1d ago

What resolution are you streaming at, and what resolution do you have the internal game rendering at if you're using DLSS upscaling?

3

u/mymarkis666 1d ago

Native resolution at 3.5k 16:10 aspect ratio, I’m using 4X frame generation. It works amazingly.

I don’t think it has anything to do with codecs. It’s about revenue share. Apple would want to take 30% of the GFN subscription for hosting the app on the App Store.

I don’t think Nvidia would go for that. We also don’t have an official iOS app, despite the demand. Everything runs through the browser.

7

u/Nervous-Spite-7701 1d ago edited 1d ago

There’s a few un official clients that don’t use browsers

I may make one for the new apple tv if I see nothing currently works for it. Im familiar with this stuff anyway

2

u/Darathor Ultimate 1d ago

Just a client not a way to subscribe. Like netflix

2

u/conspicuousxcapybara 1d ago

It’s called the ‘Netflix Exception’ for a reason lol. Even Spotify couldn’t have it also.

3

u/Darathor Ultimate 1d ago

It mean you pay outside of the app. That’s the basis of DMA act in Europe. So not out of reach

1

u/conspicuousxcapybara 1d ago

Exactly! The DMA is especially relevant.

Nvidia can, as of this moment, already launch their own third party iOS store for Geforce Now?! I cannot think of a single actual barrier.

That’s what Epic Games did. As did AltStore for emulators / torrent apps etc. Nvm the porn iOS porn app with it’s own app store!

If Nvidia just followed Apple’s tutorial, Geforce Now would be on iOS. I suspect that’d be too political considering how much they are in cahoots with the Trump regime.

-1

u/jyrox Ultimate 1d ago

What does Trump/politics have anything to do with a game steaming app?

1

u/conspicuousxcapybara 1d ago edited 18h ago

Edit: here is the publicly live-streamed phone call between Huang and Trump: https://youtu.be/vZT7eSHwmZU

Everything is political. Especially for a corporation at such a high valuation. Just look at the phone call Trump made to Jensen Huang during the live presentation of some new tech.

The guy was taking direct orders from Trump! And promised to keep doing as Trump says! In a live business presentation!

Also, that game streaming app is supposed to be on iOS right? How is it not relevant that Apple is fighting Europe to adopt the political decisions of the current Trump Regime, specifically with regards to the Digital Markets Act and the Digital Services Act?

In the EU, Geforce Now can be launched from alternative app stores, because their local jurisdiction has decided Apple was a Gatekeeper of innovations like Geforce Now.

In the US, the judicial system has granted Apple gatekeeper powers because they value property rights higher, and Apple owns the Apple ecosystem.

It couldn’t be more political imho.

Would Apple really have made the changes to their ecosystem for alternative app stores, and released a tutorial on how to do so, without EU intervention?

u/blackth0rne 18h ago

“The guy was taking orders from trump”. What can be said other than you have much to learn about the world

1

u/conspicuousxcapybara 18h ago

Huh? Here is the actual call:

0

u/blackth0rne 11h ago

That’s the all-in summit, yes, I know. Do you?
And I suppose Elon musk is a nazi too? 🥱

It's absolutely fucking NUTS how this isn't on the iPad... just fucking insane.

1

u/blodskolt 1d ago

It's not nuts, it's money. Apple would take a 30% cut, and I believe they don't allow "apps with apps" at all, so I believe GeForce Now categorize as that.

0

u/Jammin_72 1d ago

But there is an official Mac app.

10

u/jyrox Ultimate 1d ago

You can download apps outside of the App Store on MacOS. There is no GFN app on the Mac App Store.

0

u/Jammin_72 1d ago

That's fair but it's not like they're making a bunch of money on the Apple TV app store unless they're planning on really revamping gaming support on that device.

3

u/Nervous-Spite-7701 1d ago

Yeah but on tvOS and ios the app store is the only hosting option unless you load your own app locally

3

u/pehr71 Founder // Sweden 1d ago

Unless you’re in Europe and has AppStore options on iOS at least.
But still no native GeForce now

14

u/_FireHelmet_ 1d ago

Have you tried CloudGear ?

12

u/userlivewire 1d ago

How is it possible that Apple has refused to acknowledge that 120hz is the standard now? Their own phones display 120hz. They record in 120hz. There is still no way to watch the video you recorded on your $1000 iPhone in the same quality on your Apple TV.

6

u/renegade2111 1d ago

Great point

1

u/conspicuousxcapybara 1d ago

Where have they, or have they not, acknowledged this?

Regardless, iPhone was the first to record 120fps video lmao.

5

u/YamahaFourFifty 1d ago

AV1 really isn’t anything great unless you have low bandwidth

-1

u/pay-well 1d ago

The problem is that if a video is recorded in the AV1 format but devices do not support it, it will be transcoded into another format in real time, which will require significant resources

1

u/conspicuousxcapybara 1d ago

That makes no sense neither! YouTube, Facebook, Chrome, Firefox, etc decode AV1 on devices without hardware decode by default, using the highly optimised dav1d decoder.

6

u/Moi952 1d ago

4k60 ... No 120, No VRR, No ALLM .. So we need to switch to game mode on our tv when we want to play... And unactive for watch a serie or film ... Ridiculus

1

u/Bertitude 1d ago

Curious, does game mode on yours do frame gen or smooth motion? Mine just stays in Game mode without much difference beyond the reduced latency

1

u/Moi952 1d ago

When you're in game mode, the TV's picture modes are different, so I don't leave it in game mode when watching movies.

2

u/tterly_wittiest Founder 1d ago

a19 chip probably better than my M1 macbook pro

2

u/rahpexphon 1d ago

Apple’s In-App Purchase requirements and ~30% commission, which make monetization economically unviable for these multiplatform services (Microsoft has publicly described a native Xbox Cloud Gaming app as effectively “impossible” for this reason)

1

u/dusto_man 1d ago

That'll make Google happy.

1

u/FilAleMat 1d ago

120 hz ?

1

u/No-Presentation3777 Ultimate 1d ago

Av1 doesnt mean jack, Saves bandwidth.. 265 is fine if you have the bandwidth. Doest make it better if you already have a good experiance.

1

u/gr3n0lph 1d ago

Never going to happen. GFN will never be on Apple.

1

u/conspicuousxcapybara 1d ago

Idk, my hope is on the Digital Markets Act.

Aside their corruption with Trump, there is nothing preventing Nvidia to launch an alternative iOS App Store that allows EU customers to install a legit GeForce Now app.

Epic has done this. AltStore has done this. Anyone with a webserver / cloud can do this.

There’s even a porn app that did this… And porn was also said to ‘never be on apple‘

1

u/Artey86 1d ago

Well at least I will be able to see my totally legal AV1 movies in Infuse in glorious Dolby Vision now.

1

u/BubbaCrabby 1d ago

Apple wants their 30%, so you get what they give you on this [checks notes] $300 TV box 🤣

0

u/ulfhelm 1d ago

There are way cheaper clients than that thing. just go buy an Onn 4K whatever.

1

u/conspicuousxcapybara 1d ago

No HEVC YCBR 4:4:4 on those. And crazy spyware.

0

u/W4rpFluks 1d ago

I just use cloudgear.

0

u/conspicuousxcapybara 1d ago

It already supports HEVC with 4:4:4 chroma subsampling, which is higher quality compared to AV1 on Geforce Now.
