Tfw you think we're past treating some games as lame and "for nerds" then SNL goes for some low hanging fruit

/uj I just find this humor to be so uninspired, they could've gone more interesting ways with this skit but it just goes with the typical "Zelda is for girly boys, GTA is for real men" view that people have. It's like nobody except the costume designer understands these game series outside of watching the trailers. Feels like the kind of safe boring humor we get a lot from SNL these days.

why does the tf2 playerbase get so defensive if you point out the sheer amount of racism

47 Upvotes

(before you ask yes i have played tf2. for just shy of 200 hours in fact)

i legitimately dont understand why the tf2 playerbase gets the most upset out of the various valve game fanbases if you point out the overwhelming amounts of racism from the playerbase. a lot of them either cry "but muh free speech" or get on their cod lobby soapboxes. it makes me feel really alienated from the wider playerbase :(

Paradox interactive does not get enough flak for it's DLC policy

63 Upvotes

I'm not against paid expansions on their own and I understand the nuance using such expansions to continously support a game even though there are many games sustain themselves without the same kind of pay walling. But without baking a huge portion of the old DLCs into the base game so you only need to pay for the newer stuff it makes base game + all the dlc incredibly expensive.

Their policy would've been tolerable if they at least did that so the base game + the remaining newer dlcs aren't that much more expensive than the base game but they won't they do that because that's not as profitable and how else would they justify their subscription model. I genuinely cannot believe this is seen as an acceptable solution by paradox fans, literally a case of creating a problem and selling solution the idea of paying a subscription just to play all the dlcs on a game you already paid for, how does that not sound ridiculous? Sadly this is pretty much the only affordable way to play the full package for many including myself. The thing is you absolutely need the DLCs I've done a full run of EU4 without any of the dlcs and with the subscription and the difference is night and day a lot of features should be in the base game.

What's crazy is that people defend this go to paradox forums and subs and you will see posts criticizing this policy get downvoted while posts defending it get upvoted what people forget is that paradox isn't a small company anymore they can afford to provide a more affordable dlc policy but they won't. EU5 was the last straw for me the series is on it's 5th title and yet is pretty lackluster compared to EU4 and the meta kept changing making taking the time to learn the already complex game very discouraging. It didn't feel like a game it felt like an investment just to eventually pay for features that should've been at the base game at launch. This made me done with paradox and I don't think I will be playing another game from them again outside of Imperator rome with the free invictus mod.

i find it funny we have the most gaming freedom and yet companies are now at their weakest in creativity NSFW

0 Upvotes

back in the 90s and 2000s and even through most of the 2010s we got real creative games that broke the social norms and stuff games like wolfenstein, papers please,fallout new vegas ect but they were not hated at the time but people definitely didn't like it and stuff and there might be a few groups specifcally who didn't like it.

But today were more accepting more than ever and yet companies are the ones doing 180's sure would think every once and awhile a game is very creative and goes for stuff like saying the N-word and it is a white saying but idk i hate how nobody has balls now and it isn't just gaming its:

films
shows
books (i think)
and even toys.
we can't make anything that just goes against society like i am a person who doesn't judge and i would want to play a game like rdr2 again and look at a film like the simpsons movie i can tell you the second one will be more calmed down you know? does anyone agree with me

Current Game Devs Have Lost Their Passion: The Death of Split-Screen and the Era of Lazy Excuses

0 Upvotes

"Am I the only one who thinks modern gaming is dying, both on mobile and consoles/PC?

Let's look at mobile games first. Developers keep making cheap excuses. Why is Mortal Kombat Mobile reduced to a brainless 'tap and swipe' game instead of having real fighting mechanics and live PvP like the console versions? Why does NFS No Limits force us to race against 'ghosts' instead of letting us play 1v1 with real friends, climb local leaderboards, or compete in a global Most Wanted ranking? They claim it's about network stability or player queue times, but that's just a cover-up for their greed. They don't want fair competition; they just want to milk players through pay-to-win mechanics and loot boxes. Even a basic LAN mode via Wi-Fi/Hotspot would fix this, but they refuse to add it because they can't monetize it.

This laziness has infected console and PC gaming too. The beautiful era of split-screen couch co-op is dead. Modern developers constantly make the lazy excuse that 'graphics are too advanced' and that rendering split-screen would crash the game.

What a joke! Let’s look at history. Back in the PS2 and PS3 eras, RAM was extremely limited. The PS2 had only 32MB of RAM, yet developers pulled off miracles like GTA San Andreas. The PS3 had a tiny 256MB of RAM, but they managed to run GTA V and delivered incredible 4-player split-screen experiences in games like Blur, Split/Second, and Call of Duty at 60 FPS. Those developers had true grit, passion, and optimization skills. Today's game devs have 16GB of RAM and massive GPU power, but they lack the determination to make things work. If split-screen is really that heavy, why not just add a setting that slightly lowers the graphics for split-screen mode?

Look at Gran Turismo 7. It has some of the most stunning, photorealistic graphics in modern gaming. Yet, it includes a split-screen mode. Did anyone call its graphics 'trash' because of that? Absolutely not! It proved that when developers actually care and put effort into optimization, it is entirely possible.

The real truth is simple: major corporations don't want us sharing one game on one couch. They want to force you and your friend to buy two separate consoles, two copies of the game, and two online subscriptions.

I wish I had the chance to stand in front of these corporate game developers at a massive event and look them in the eyes. I would tell them to stop hiding behind tech limitations. Modern gaming has lost its soul to greed and laziness, and it’s time we, the gamers, call them out on it."

Why does everyone claim to hate extraction shooters while continuing to play them?

0 Upvotes

Every time extraction shooters come up online, people act like the genre is exhausted, repetitive, and something nobody asked for. Yet these games keep attracting huge audiences, and the same people complaining often put hundreds of hours into them.

I think the tension of entering with valuable gear, risking everything, and escaping with a great haul creates a feeling most multiplayer games cannot match. People might hate losing, but that risk is also what keeps them coming back.

Are extraction shooters actually overhated, or do people enjoy complaining about the exact mechanics that make the genre addictive?

Nostaligia is holding us back and why we can no longer "let people have fun" - wow forever

15 Upvotes

It’s easy to get swept up in the nostalgia of classic, remastered expansions. They bring back good memories of a 'happier' time. But our willingness to endlessly consume this recycled content is ruining our chances for anything new.

If players consistently show they are perfectly happy paying subscriptions and box prices for content that was designed over two decades ago why would devs ever add anything new?

Why would a studio or its shareholders greenlight the budget for:

- New races that aren't recolors
- More than 1 new class every 4 years
- Literally anything your heart desires.

when they can just hit the re-release button for a guaranteed return on investment?

As long as we the players demonstrate that low-effort, high-margin nostalgia trips are highly profitable, the industry will naturally optimize for them instead of evolving the genre.

By readily accepting rehashed content, we are effectively voting with our wallets for stagnation.

I know. I know. "Let people have fun". See, but we can't anymore, because the 'people' are literally cheering for a 2nd release of a state of a game that is soon to be 30 years old.

Like, really?

The "new normal" for the release cycles of big studios and their biggest franchises

0 Upvotes

I feel like with all the two main franchises at Bethesda (TES and Fallout), then Rockstar (GTA and RDR), then over at PlayStation studios with series like The Last of Us and Horizon, both of those which got screwd over not only by massive dev times but also poor planning and live-service projects that went nowhere, we are increasingly moving towards a system where certain AAA franchises releasing games is turning into this huge, once in a decade event.

Sure, the reasons for how massively long they're taking for each game are all varied and depend on the studio or publisher. When it comes down to it, most of these huge flagship AAA games, even when they're something as relatively short and linear as Uncharted or TLOU, take like 4 or 5 years to make (and that's at the very average, as it can go up to 8 years like GTA 6 or Cyberpunk 2077), and that's not accounting for all unforeseen events at management that may delay them further.

And the studios's franchises themselves have to compete between each other for dedicated years of dev time and their slot in a decade, like we're seeing with Bethesda (this decade was for Starfield apparently, we may be lucky to get TES6 before 2030, while at least Obsidian might make new Fallouts concurrently), CDPR (Cyberpunk and The Witcher), and so many others. Hell, even smaller games in the AAA area might get affected. You'd think a game as relatively mid-sized as Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart would've gotten a sequel by now almost 6 years later, but Insomniac has gotten their hands ever too full with Marvel IPs to spare the money and manpower.

My point being, the release cycles and dev times are already huge enough, ranging from anywhere between roughly half a decade to a whole one, and a lot of those are influenced by poor judgement from corporate management. That doesn't mean franchises like COD or Assassin's Creed won't keep up with their yearly or almost yearly releases. Their publishers are huge and can afford multiple studios for the same franchise so they work on simultaneous projects all the time.

But the really high-polished AAA beasts, (even when they're not that high polished or well received at launch) the ones that take many years to make from a studio overwhelmed by too many IPs and so little time to take care of them all, those might be heading for a bleak future where they only ever come around once a decade. For some of those studios, gone are the days they could pump out a whole trilogy or even five games of the same franchise over the course of a decade, like in this century's first 15 years or so.

And unfortunately, unless there's some severe shakeup in the industry, this is just something we'll have to get used to. Drip-feed on your favorite franchise one drop per decade, a couple of times before you die, or a couple more if both you and the franchise are lucky to live that long

What game do you love that everyone else seems to hate?

Thumbnail

Mine is Final Fantasy XV.

I know the story was messy, important content was split between different media, and parts of the world felt unfinished. But the road trip with Noctis, Prompto, Ignis, and Gladiolus completely carried it for me. By the end, they felt like actual friends, and that final campfire scene hit harder than most “better written” games I’ve played.

What poorly reviewed or widely hated game will you always defend, and why?

my thoughts on Veilguard after 100%

52 Upvotes

I was one of the people defending Veilguard at launch, mostly because I hated how fast it got swallowed by the anti-woke side and how A lot of the loudest takes I've were from people who had not finished it, or repeated something a youtuber said, now that I've finished it, I agree with some of the Criticism and think it's one of my least favorite games in the franchise

I found that combat could be fun if a little bit repetitive, the character customisation is decent but less deep than I thought it would be, The story is messy, I don’t love how they blended all of the world states into one kind of messy one, the returning cast is smaller than I would’ve liked Solas takes a back seat to generic evil Elven Gods who are way less interesting, and I like all of the party members but I don’t LOVE them except for Emmrich, Davrin and Neve

then there's the Taash Scenes (don't worry, I won't go into a transphobic rand):

yes, I think the push up scene was a very bad idea because the nuclear level cringe of the idea could only be saved if it was played for comedy but I don’t think it’s funny enough in execution to compensate. but, The rest of Taash's arc is more interesting than the clips that floated around. They are immature, recently out, territorial, and a hypocrite when they tell Emmrich he cannot change who he is.

when people bring up Veilguard (The Taash Arc specifically) they always argue in the most bad faith interpretations of every possible storyline, character or scene (or they haven’t played it at all and are just parroting stuff they heard from YouTubers). There’s so much blatant misinformation about the game, The online rhetoric around it was basically “BioWare has abandoned Dragon Age to preach progressive ideology and destroy everything the series stood for”, but the actual game was just a mid RPG with a few cringe lines, a compressed story and doesn't really hold up compared to the previous games

My sister is looking for gaming and rp friends!,☺️🐇🤙

0 Upvotes

My sister sent me this to crosspost for her !,🤗🐇✌️

Hi everyone! My sister is posting this for me since I don’t have a Reddit account.

Hello! I’m Dr. Rigor Mortis (my pronouns are she/her), I’m 25 years old, and I’m looking for some new friends, long-term RP partners, and/or an RP group. I’d especially love to meet people around my age and connect with others in the LGBTQ+ community.

A little about my RP style:

* Literate writing

* Present tense

* Third person

*Preferably long-term RP

*I’m most comfortable with original characters (OCs), but I’m also happy to use canon characters.

*I primarily use Discord for RP.

I absolutely love darker themes and settings, especially gothic horror, supernatural, Victorian, apocalypse, fantasy, drama, slashers, and angst. Give me vampires, werewolves, Jekyll & Hyde, creepy supernatural situations, doomed characters, and general horror goodness.

I’m also perfectly fine with characters developing relationships as part of the story, as long as everything stays SFW and the romance doesn’t become the entire focus of the RP. I’m here for the story, character development, worldbuilding, and all the angst that comes with it.

Fandoms I’m Into

**Anime / Shows**

* Bleach

* Soul Eater

* Steven Universe

**Games**

* Deadlock

* Five Nights at Freddy’s (1–3)

* Silent Hill

* God of War (Greek Saga)

* Warframe

* Darkwood

* OFF

* Minecraft

* Roblox (Guts & Blackpowder)

* D&D

Feel free to comment or send me a DM, and we can exchange Discord information!

21+ only, please.

Why do some people think Atlus and Persona are going woke?

0 Upvotes

This may sound like I'm making things up or rage baiting especially if you've seen how many (obviously not all) fans act online. But yeah there are noticeable amount of chuds in the fandom that think Atlus is sanitizing Persona to appease the west and how Atlus has gone woke they were also calling metaphor woke because something about tolerance?

Mind you this is a series that hasn't had a female protagonist since P3P and only once before in Persona 2 Eternal Punishment has arguably went backwards with same sex depictions going from romanceables in P2 and P3P to whatever the fuck P5 is. There is a noticeable amount of people that are actually tone deaf about this and claim the series is "so gay" based on arbitrary aesthetic grounds like they did with Akechi "omg how can you be a homophobic persona fan P5 is soooo gay look at akechi"

Although it is hard to deny that some things are seemingly being toned down but I don't think this makes Atlus woke. To be tinfoiled hat for a moment I think ATLUS is trying play both sides they won't be as derogatory and as mocking as previous titles but they also won't add things like a female MC or same sex romance options as that will make the chuds upset and also I'm pretty sure they don't internally because... reasons. Best you can hope for is showing a pride pin for 2 seconds. They may even do some baiting to provoke fujos.
