Shopping/Haul Stepdad scored all this for $1!
Seems to work still, booklets look like they’ve never been touched. We live in a small town and my Stepdad got it at an estate sale where the owners seem to just wanted to get rid of all their excessive belongings. (There was a $600 acoustic guitar there I wanted but someone scored it for $80 lol). This is fine tho 🙂!
EDIT: JUST FOR CLARIFICATION* I used the term AUCTION HOUSE before but technically I guess it was an "Estate Sale" and it was held by relatives of the owners who already passed away unfortunately and were handling the auction prices. A lot of stuff were sold almost dirt cheap, like literally they just wanted to get rid of everything efficiently as possible. A lot of cool vintage guitars my stepdad saw got sold for less than $100. A lot of random things too. The gameboy set was literally one of the last things sitting in a pile all the older folks were avoiding and he texted me: “How much is this? Should I get this?” And I said uhh sure if you can get it for cheap. I think the relatives were fairly old themselves and weren't really knowledgeable about video game related product pricing unfortunately, but lo and behold, my stepdad turns out to be a good bargainer I guess lol. Well that’s the story. I’ll just leave it at that.

oh he got her a nice shelf for around $10, and some other neat random stuff for a buck as well. Like random tins full of DVDs for a $1 and a tin full of 90's cassette tapes for a $1 lol.

I can picture the scene. Yardsale. Almost everything 1$ (Besides accoustic guitars for stepsons 80bucks and bribing shelves 10)

For a half-second I thought that was a Rated-E SML2. I was about to lose myself. Alas, it's a common variant, but still 100% worth playing.

u/Togetic52 Jun 04 '26
Interesting, I didn't know about different variants when it came to the game rating for this particular game.

u/rlhrlh Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26
The ratings are different due to release dates and not some content revaluation. KA was and older format and then it was changed to the set of ratings we have now, dropping the KA and using simply "Rated E".
The Rated E SML2 came out in very-late 1999, along with a few others. SML1 is quite hard to find and might, possibly, be one of the rarest variants of a US game to find--almost certainly for first party titles. SML2 is also quite rare, however, it was a much more fun game and by 1999/2000, most people were not interested in getting a new copy of SML considering it's rather dated game play and that the game was still quite accessible as a used item from places like Funcoland or Electronics Boutique.
Those Rated-E 1999 versions are a bit of an enigma as to why they exist, but the OG Game Boy saw a bit of a spike in re-interest when Pokemon came out. My guess is Nintendo re-released some of their best selling titles at that time to go along with the Pokemon craze. It never hurts to give people additional purchase options, so I assume that's what Nintendo did. But, that's 100% speculation.SML came out in 1989 when the GB was released. SML2 was a few years later. And then, when the GB was basically dead as a system, they made one last series of releases. SML had a near 11 year lifespan, while SML2 was about 8 years. I know it's a bit different now, but back then that was very impressive run for a game.

Wow that’s quite a lot of game knowledge you have there lol. And you’re showing both our ages once I read the words “Electronics Boutique” 😂. Very interesting stuff to know, thanks for the info mate!

The GB looks like it was well taken care of. If the shell is original. Yea best way to preserve and keep stuff in good condition for sure.

I think they really didn’t bother touching this thing at all for God knows how long… are there any things I should be worried about when it comes to dealing with vintage game consoles like this considering its age? (I’ll do some googling after this, figure I ask here first while I’m here lol.)

So it was like, we will start the bidding at one dollar do I hear one dollar?
:: step dad:: One dollar
One dollar one dollar do hear two one dollar one dollar, going once going twice sold for one dollar to the step dad

u/Togetic52 Jun 04 '26
Lol close enough, it was more like “Can I just take all this off your hands for a $1?” It was an auction house where the original owners passed away and the relatives were auctioning all the belongings. I think they were fairly old in age, so they had really no idea what the pricing was for video game related product unfortunately.

Man, memories with the Iron Man and X O ManoWar game. It was one of the first Game Boy games I had as a kid and I remember trying SO hard to like it because I liked Iron Man from the comics so much.
…It’s a terrible game 😭
Whoever you got that from either took REALLY good care of their games, or their parents never let them play it lol.

u/Togetic52 Jun 04 '26
Is it?? I was going to try them all out eventually because unfortunately the only gameboy game I’m familiar with in this picture is Super Mario Land 2 😅 I did try out tetris for a bit and yep, it’s tetris alright 🤣.

u/HiImNewToPTCGO Jun 04 '26
Unfortunately it is. I’ll leave this here for you
All the other games you have are good and worth playing

May I ask if this happens to be in MO? An estate sale just posted a very similar lot that I was eyeballing cause it says it’ll be there on Saturday.

A dumb mother who's trying to get rid of their kids old shit and didn't care about price. Only way it makes sense.

Man, the only thing that could've topped this was if a copy of one of Pokémon GSC was included. Great find, and great job to dad!

u/Togetic52 Jun 04 '26
That's actually currently my next step right now lol... on a quest to find a Crystal Repro to play haha since I grew up mainly on Pokemon with these systems...

They may as well offer it for free or throw it out if they only want $1. Anyone with a brain knows it's worth more than $1. Just not buying this

It was an auction house where the original owners passed away and their relatives were handling the auctioning of their belongings. I think the relatives themselves were fairly old in age and didn’t really know the value of video game related product :/. We live in a small town so stuff like this happens often. My stepdad last year bought a whole wii setup with games and everything for $2 lol.

Anyone downvoting you has never lived in a small town.

It's kind of mindblowing people can't believe something like this can actually happen in reality lol. Is finding a working gameboy really that rare in this day and age? I haven't had a gameboy since I was 6 or 7. I'm 31 years old now lol. I guess it might be the people who bought theirs off ebay or at some vintage retro gaming store for 2nd hand market value?

My very first gameboy was a purple gbc I got for Christmas, along with a copy of Tetris dx

The dead giveaway is that the games have those plastic cases. Cool find, not sure why you gotta BS the price.
1
u/Togetic52 Jun 04 '26
I don't know why you would assume I'm bsing the price lol, it was literally sold for a buck at an estate sale. The games actually came not only in plastic cases but in this protective tiny compartment bag holder for them as well, I just took them out to display them for the photo

Yo, looks great. I recommend you to play tetris, it's surprisingly addictive for such simple game
