How do I fossil hunt in a river?

Hi guys! I’m new here but long story short, I am currently unemployed living at home with family. Our house is on a central Alabama river, and I was wondering how or if I could go fossil hunting in the more shallow parts of the river? I have been river wading plenty of times, and with the weather getting colder and snakes going away, I was thinking this might be a fine time for a hunt. However, it’s swift flowing river so it’s not like I can go digging a deep hole or anything. So how would I go about doing a hunt? Thanks!

I went fossil hunting along the Calvert Cliffs in Maryland this weekend. Picked up this bone fragment. AA battery for scale. I’m thinking maybe whale vertebrae? I also found this nice shark tooth. Any way to determine what kind of shark?

How Did Ocean Corals End Up on a Mountain? Amazing Fossil Discovery. #FossilHunting #BrainCoral

How did brain coral fossils end up on top of a mountain more than 100 km from the ocean? In this fossil hunting adventure, I uncover one of the most surprising fossil discoveries I've ever made.

What started as a search for new fossil locations on a hot day quickly turned into an incredible journey through an ancient seabed preserved in stone. A week earlier, I had explored a nearby hilltop where I found several fossil bivalves and coral fragments, but I still had no idea where the original fossil-bearing rock layer was located.

Determined to solve the mystery, I followed a remote road leading to the top of another hill, near an old windmill that has since been converted into a house. Along the way, I spotted scattered fossils of Myophorella lusitanica, Arcomytilus, and broken oyster shells, all signs that this area once lay beneath an ancient ocean.

Then came an astonishing discovery.

As I climbed higher, I noticed that the road surface was literally covered with coral fossils. Despite regular exposure to traffic, wind, rain, and intense sunlight, remarkably detailed fossil specimens could still be found everywhere. Among them were solitary corals and several beautiful brain coral fossils, preserved with stunning detail after millions of years.

I was able to recover a few exceptional specimens, but the biggest question remains: how did marine coral fossils end up on top of a mountain when the nearest coastline is now over 100 kilometers away?

This discovery is a powerful reminder of how dramatically Earth has changed through geological time. Mountains that stand high above the landscape today were once part of a thriving marine environment teeming with life.

If you enjoy fossil hunting, paleontology, geology, coral fossils, ancient oceans, Jurassic fossils, and field discoveries, this is a video you won't want to miss.
