Super-Early Production Model 01 AR15 | Serial #000192 | Dec. 1959 Production? | Green Furniture | European Collector
We are visiting a collector in Europe who has an incredible selection of rare firearms. Here is an extremely-early production Model 01 AR15. The serial number is 000192, and because the serial numbers for the Model 01 started at 000101, it is among the first 100 ever manufactured. This extremely-early serial number also indicates it was probably manufactured in December of 1959, the same month that large-scale production of this model started.
The Model 01 was the first mass-produced version of Eugene Stoner’s AR-15 design after Colt acquired the manufacturing rights from ArmaLite. Serial production began in December 1959 and continued into mid-1963, with roughly 14,500 made in the range starting around serial 000101 through about 014484.
These early rifles were primarily for U.S. Air Force use, Project AGILE testing (AGILE was basically the predecessor to DARPA), limited foreign military sales, and some commercial/police sales. Key early export contracts included small batches (around two dozen each) to Malaya/Malaysia and India, plus smaller numbers to places like Australia, Burma, and Singapore.
Note some interesting features on this early AR include semi-gloss green furniture (is this original furniture?). These also have the slab-side lower (no fencing around the magazine release at all) and this is probably a 1-14" twist barrel.
If this rifle was a transferable machinegun in the US, it would probably be worth in the $40k - $50k range.

Remington Versa Max
I don't know if nominations are a thing here, but I've just been remembering this thing recently. It was supposed to use a variable gas system that used the shells themselves as valves for multiple gas ports.
An autoloader that would take most shotgun ammo sounded pretty sick, but I never got a good sense of whether it was actually any good. Everything about it just seemed to parrot marketing from Remington. I think the only hands-on critique I saw of it was one guy said the receiver was abnormally long, so handling felt weird.

Does The M134D (Minigun) Generate A Vortex?
I just thought of this and was curious. The multiple barrels are to help combat heat accretion, but do they also create a vortex?
The barrels spin so fast and grind against the air around them, cooling them off slightly better than a static barrel would. But do they also create a slight vortex that pulls in the surrounding air which would help cool them off further? And if they do, has there been any attempt to put small fins on the barrels to increase that effect?
And lastly, if this was true, how much would it help?

H&K WSG2000
The Heckler & Koch WSG2000 (Weitreichendes Scharfschützengewehr, Long-range sniper rifle in English) was a prototype bullpup sniper rifle proposed in 1990. It was planned to be chambered for 9x90mm MEN and would have been ideal as an anti-materiel rifle. The WSG2000 only ever reached the mock-up stage and was never built as a fully-functional rifle.
The most interesting part of the rifle is the Fire Control system:
"The Full-Solution Fire Control System envisioned for the WSG2000 was considered the component of the system presenting the highest risk to the developers, even more so than the new 9X90 mm ammunition. As recently as 1990, and even today, a sighting system does not yet exist that can do all that was required of the proposed WSG2000 sighting system, in a small, portable and cost effective package suitable for a "man portable" sniper rifle.
The Fire Control System (FCS) for the WSG2000 was a joint effort by HK and various European sight and electronics manufacturers. The system was comprised of a ballistic computer, which would be fed information from various onboard sensors, and compute a firing solution for the operator based on the data entered. The shooter would enter the necessary ammunition data on a keypad on the rear of the sight and the FCS would do the rest, providing an adjusted aiming point within the sight, which the gunner would use to engage the target. The sensor suite within the FCS would read wind, barometric pressure, temperature, elevation, any presence of angle to the target, cant, etc. at the sight's location and feed this data to the micro computer with the sight. This data would be combined with the exact range to the target provided by the laser rangefinder, also an integral component within the detachable FCS. A single touch of the laser rangefinder button and milliseconds later the FCS would provide the appropriate aiming point within the optical sight of the FCS, adjusted for all conditions and range to the target. It was even believed at that time in the early 1990s that the technology was available to include a means to determine target speed of moving targets and to establish automatically the appropriate lead.
For use during periods of low visibility or near complete darkness, an add-on modular passive night vision module, similar in design to the now familiar Simrad KN200/KN250 systems, could be attached to the objective lens end of the sight by means of an integral dovetail interface. Obviously steps were taken to provide the means to use the sight if the battery for the sight or the electronics within failed and for the initial zeroing of the system. A bold and aggressive undertaking, the first rifle-size full-solution fire control system with such capabilities is just now being developed and proven in testing in the U.S. Objective Crew Served Weapon (OCSW) and Objective Individual Combat Weapon (OICW) programs."
Most information of this rifle can be found in this article at HKPRO: https://www.hkpro.com/threads/wsg2000.527817/
