Hey, that might be my father flying, he was piloting Drakens at that time and based in Rovaniemi.

edit: Got actually some info from him. These are the Filip variants of Draken and pilots probably Hannes Bjurström and Markku Lappalainen.

But who took the photo?

Dad did! That's how he knows who the other pilots were.

The Lapland Air Wing (Finnish: Lapin Lennosto), is the peace-time Finnish Air Force unit responsible for the protection of the airspace of northern Finland.

Beautiful birds, the Draken and MiG-21 still look futuristic even after more than 60 years.

It would be interesting to hear from a younger person if all you need to be futuristic is the delta wing design.

I think it looks "retro-futuristic" like those 1950:s depictions of 2010.

Futurism is a bit confusing. Futuristic design is it's own style from the 1920's, like funktionalism, or modernism.

It has nothing to do with what we think the future will look like. The style will remain the same forever.

TIL that futurism and futuristic are the same thing. Are they really in everyday talk?

The thing not visible is how extremely LOUD the Draken's were

oh my... what a different city! No Jätkänkynttilä, no Rinteenkulma, so many buildings that are no longer in Rovaniemi.

I know this photo is about fighter jets, but thanks for showing how Rovaniemi used to look back in ~1980 :)

Those jets made hideous sound when departing from airfield.

I lived most of my childhood near the base and they flew over our house several times per week

Propably so Soviet morons would know for sure that it was not the aircrafts of some other country. Sweden having access to Finland's airspace was probably a big no back then, as an example. The Soviet Union would not allow that. Denmark also flew Draken at this time. It was maybe a good choice to easily be able to tell the three air forces apart.

Yeah they were really really loud, we lived somewhere top left corner (where the airport is) and every window in our house shaked when they departed, or especially when they rushed towards north.
