Discussion Why can Batman and Spider-Man survive recasting, while Iron Man or Wolverine feel tied to one actor?

I’ve been wondering why recasting works so differently depending on the character.

Batman and Spider-Man have both had several actors, and people seem able to accept a new version pretty quickly.

But with some characters, the actor and the role almost become the same thing. RDJ as Iron Man is the obvious example for me, and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine feels pretty similar.

I’m not sure it’s just about how good the actor was, though.

Maybe it matters how long they played the role, how successful that version became, whether the character was already famous before them, or how much the actor actually shaped the character people know.

So why do you think some characters survive recasting easily while others feel almost attached to one actor?

And which characters do you think would be hardest to recast?

.RDJ has done 10 movies as iron man including a cameo and Hugh has done 11 as wolverine including 2 cameos.

The most movies done by a batman is 3 for Christian bale.

For Spiderman it's 3 from Toby McGuire. We technically have 7 from Tom Holland, but he's not been recast yet so who knows how that will go.

Yeah, the number of appearances probably matters more than I realized. Ten or eleven movies with the same actor gives audiences a very different kind of attachment than three movies before a reset.

Don’t forget that also when they recast Spider-Man as Andrew Garfield it wasn’t nearly as successful. Tom holland was a recast after a less successful recast, which can go either way and the original reception for Tom Holland wasn’t amazing until civil war came out and he nailed it.
