Generation recommandation
Hello everyone,
I’m planning to buy my first ST early 2027, and I can’t decide if I get an mk7 182 for 10k€ or an mk8 200 for 15k€, idk how reliable they are, i’ve heard that the mk7 is pretty solid, how does the mk8 compare?
Also, i want to remap it to an e85 stage 1.
Thank you in advance

Depends on what the use case is. MK8 is a better street car, MK7 is a better track car

So if I want to have fun in backroads and twisty mountain roads the mk7 is better?

Mk7 if you want to modify. Easier and the aftermarket is huge.
Mk8 if you want a more civilized car and daily livability. To modify it is more complicated. I'm building an engine on the Mk8 and the 3 cylinder engine is a bitch to modify.

A 3 cylinder is naturally unbalanced. I'm building a forged engine and not a lot of people can balance this engine correctly.

i see. so youre talking everything apart lmao. what are you forging? entire rotating assembly? sleeves?

You can get oversize forged pistons. Forged rods are available as well. No rod bearing or main bearing available, which is a fkg pain. No sleeve needed, a simple bore is ok. The pain point is the balancing. On a Mk7 4 cyl you can get away with not balancing or balancing a 4 cyl is very easy, anybody can do it. On a 3 cylinder it's a bitch to do.

Both are generally reliable but I suppose a lot of that depends on who’s owned it before and how they’ve looked after it. I’ve only had experience with the MK8, bought at 3 years old and have had it for 3 years and it’s been more than solid (touch wood). A common issue with them is the steering column develops a clicking when turning and some have had to replace the whole unit which can come back again after time, luckily this hasn’t happened to mine. Also if you get the 3 door the seals on the b pillar will crack and there’s no easy fix, I’ve been meaning to just super glue mine together to bodge it and Ford says you need to replace the whole window unit and not just swap out the seal which I’m definitely not doing! I think you’ll be happy with either if you find a good example but personally the mk8 feels a lot more grown up especially the interior.

One has a great engine, the other has an engine that's almost a bike. Choose wisely.

I posted this question almost exactly two years ago. They're all reliable. I bought my mk7 last year and I'm 100% satisfied with it. That said, I've never driven a mk8.
