Subreddit Stance on TERFs / Gender-Critical Ideology and Trans Inclusion

This post exists to counter an influx of TERFs and gender-critical users.

EDIT: nothing below is new, see sources at the end of post, this text is over one year old.

The term TERF (trans-exclusionary radical feminist), while diluted with mass adoption, remains generally understood and accurate enough. While most feminists disavow TERFism as anti-feminist (as it undermines feminism and reinforces patriarchy) some still claim it as a some kind of "radical feminism".

TERFism is defined by its most visible failure, being trans-exclusionary, but its failure is as complete as it is foundational — reliance on reductive, conservative myths of gender and biological sex; reliance on exclusion, fear, blaming men, and retaliation; and ultimately reinforcing patriarchy by policing all women and gatekeeping "women's spaces" instead of dismantling patriarchy directly. It pretends women can be saved with a women-led escalation of patriarchal segregation while it sacrifices any woman for its failed obsession to define women-hood (to reduce it to something simple and aid policing and judge us all for it we're "truly a woman").

Truly a movement of fear instead of graceful courage, exclusion instead of fostering coalition, and blame and retaliation instead of healing community — relying on what we reject in patriarchy and forgoing everything we hope feminism could give us. Its rhetoric and fears mirror that of other hate groups and often end in political alliance with fascism, white supremacists, among others.

This is a feminist subreddit for feminists to be uncensored. We define feminism as a political movement addressing misogyny (without any need to exclude anyone, no matter how much you find them confusing or scary). We hope for dialogue rooted in respect, solidarity, and a vision for liberation beyond narrow identities — but if needed we will enforce that it is not hateful nor allied with oppression of any kind. We care about you as a person and about the views you endorse while here — and we will continue to advocate for you whether you remain here or not, whether you support or undermine us.

TERF ideology undermines feminism by replicating the very patriarchy we come here to resist — policing women, enforcing gender, exclusion, retaliation, myth, and fear. TERF ideology is a collective patriarchal bargain; it is internalized misogyny on the level of a movement; it is both misogyny and transphobia.

It is not feminism and does not belong here.

The difference between gender critical feminists and transphobes/TERFs is the difference between a self-labeled euphemism and an unambiguous denunciation.

Regardless, it speaks to a group of people who implicitly distrust men, consider feminism a women's-only movement, and want to create women-exclusive community/spaces. They attempt to discriminate on the basis of sex to do this and that discrimination becomes most obvious as transphobia but, since it polices all women, it is also misogyny.

On language and dogwhistles:

Also, wayyy at the the top, please do not use "biological woman" as that is a TERF dogwhistle. Biologically female is also not appropriate or sufficient for distinguishing cis and trans women.

The term "biological woman" is a dogwhistling slur used by TERFs and we expect you to be able to use the term 'cis woman' (or AFAB/'female bodied people' is specifically speaking to biological sex) instead.

On changing rooms / “women’s spaces”:

Drawing lines on how you impose sex or gender upon others is sexism — excluding trans women from women's changing rooms doesn't protect women but exacerbates patriarchal policing of women and VAW.

On the broader pattern:

People today engage with gender as it is today — transgender, NB, and cis people alike — within a cultural context of identity and misogynistic oppression. Trans people exist and so do feminists, often only through self-identification. Feminists and trans-people alike are harmed by and are allied against patriarchal oppression. All transphobia is deeply intertwined with misogyny (and racism) it is transphobic and bigoted to ignore others' "genderism" while hyper-fixating on trans people.

TERFs believe domination and exclusion is 'natural' but what must be opposed is patriarchy, male domination (and female exclusion). Their idiocy and oppressive misogyny from policing all women to exclude all who they see as men comes to a very visible head when they start excluding trans women — hence the name: trans exclusionary radical feminist. Gender-essentialism exacerbates misogyny so these TERFs' 'feminism' distinguished itself from feminism by being transphobic and misogynistic, so it's not really feminism if feminism is an intersectional movement for women's liberation that addresses misogyny...

We do not see TERFs as feminists here, so please report anything breaking the rules as this is a space for you as a feminist to be uncensored, not one for them.

I'd rather you create posts centering what you want to see here. Be the trans inclusion you want to see and make this a welcoming place for all.

Woman chases fraternity member at the University of Chicago after she witnessed him attempt to rape her friend while she is followed and harassed by another fraternity member

This is so fucking tiring.

I'm tired of male violence. I'm tired of the grotesque, banal, almost ritualistic ways in which women's suffering is manufactured, consumed, dissected, and then made into a fucking joke. I'm tired of hearing about women being assaulted, harassed, stalked, terrorised, humiliated, and violated. I'm tired of men treating women's pain as a spectator sport, and I'm especially tired of the misogynistic incel rapist assholes who seem to regard a woman's humanity as a negotiable consideration.

A woman witnesses an attempted rape against her friend, and the situation escalates into a chase while another fraternity member follows and harasses her. She is trying to respond to an act of violence against another woman, and then she's subjected to mockery, being recorded and harassed herself. And then we're supposed to carry on as though this is some isolated aberration, some unfortunate incident that can be filed away and forgotten until the next headline. How many times are women supposed to encounter this shit before people stop pretending that their fear is an overreaction?

And what makes me sick is that the violence doesn't end when the immediate incident is over. There is the violence itself, and then there is the spectacle that follows it - a woman can witness an attempted rape, find herself subjected to harassment, and then have her respons, the recording, the circulation, the mockery, the insinuations, the people treating a woman's distress as entertainment and her anger as an invitation to humiliate her further. If we finally lose our patience, if we swear, if we become angry, if we stop entertaining the same abuse for the hundredth time, suddenly our anger becomes the spectacle, and the conduct that provoked it recedes into the background.

Mostly, I am tired of the sheer fucking banality of it all. Tired of the same humiliations, the same abuse, the same smug little men convinced that their sexual abuse is a demonstration of some alpha male right. I hope these incels get locked up away for a very long time.

Spoiler for possible DV or SA trigger.

Genuinely curious: I stumbled onto this post elsewhere, and I think it's absolutely shiity, in addition to not being funny. I would love to know what some of you think about it.

[Question] Should we continue to shave our legs?

Now I’m NOT talking about woman who shave their legs for medical reasons like sensory issues or natural have no leg hair. You guys continue as you please.

Of course shaving your legs is a choice in a feminist world. But you lose the choice when the majority are shaving their legs anyway and the non shaving become a minority therefore becomes the abnormal. I’ve only ever been shamed by woman for having hairy legs. That’s the results of patriarchy ofc. I’m sorry if this sounds like I’m trying to shame woman. That’s absolutely not what I’m trying to do. It’s like watching a body positivity influencer who is this jacked guy. You’re happy they are saying it but they don’t represent you at all or show any evidence of having body positivity towards their own body.

Again I’m NOT trying to shame women. Also sorry if the grammar is bad. So I ask should we all just suddenly stop shaving our legs as protest? Should we encourage this?

[Productive Critique] misandry is REAL men's rights activism

i've been trying to come up with creative new ways to frame patriarchy recently. i think it can be packaged to benefit men.

but I have the opposite opinion of people who think we should be nice to men.

the most important social problems are murder and rape. they need to be talked about more.

men are also murdered and raped when they call out misogyny.

calling out men as a class, and how often men rape and murder people under patriarchy, benefits men too.

Feminist take on Elizabeth Holmes and the new film

"The real question is whether she believes herself, especially when the alternative is acknowledging how far she has drifted from self-knowledge."

"How could someone be so calculated and so naive at once? At one point, Elizabeth lets slip that she does not believe he would have fallen in love with her if he had recognized her from the news right away. Is this a deliberate remark to draw sympathy or a revealing off-hand remark? Is she so divorced from reality that she doesn’t realize how she comes across?"

"If those questions seem misogynistic, that is the whole point. Elizabeth Holmes has been defined by two ostensibly contradictory, equally demeaning narratives: that she is a victim of grooming, and that she is a cunning sociopath who surrounds herself with men who will run interference on her behalf in exchange for power over her. "

"The final 20 minutes of YCSE made me sob, and it is basically impossible to explain why, even in coded terms."

"Because for as ridiculous and funny as YCSE can be, I left the film absolutely gutted. Elizabeth Holmes is a pathetic and tragic figure. I see myself in her even as she remains totally closed off from anyone. She is the kind of person that cannot be known; it is even unclear whether the choice to remain at a remove from herself was made by her or for her."

This last part is what I am trying to do here, trying to swim against the inexorable tide of relentless 2d negativity. I'm trying to speak for a woman who everyone speaks for. If that's wrong, I don't want to be right.

"Elizabeth has never been able to speak on her own behalf and she never will"

Her dad, Sunny, Larry, Nathan, Don, all projecting onto this hopeful woman. Pulling the strings. Its heartbreaking.

[Feminists & Allies Only] Super long rant: being angry

Trigger warning: this post contains topics relating to sexual violence.

I'm what people call a "man-hater". I put the term inside quotes because it's not entirely true - I love my dad and I have deep respect for my male teachers at school.

But even knowing that men are not a single monolithic entity, my feelings towards them in general are strongly negative: I am angry at men but I am also scared of them. I've always known about the violence, the abuse, and all the bad stuff done to women done by men. I've held this discourse for a while, even before I was ambushed and SA'd by a stranger in broad daylight on a deserted bike trail. Fortunately, nothing super terrible happened - I came out with a few superficial injuries, but I consider myself lucky because the worst didn't happen.

This incident just confirmed all of the preconceived notions I had about men and validated my feelings of disappointment, resentment and anger. Since then, I feel utterly vulnerable and scared when I walk down the street or beside parked cars - this is a feeling that all women but few men can understand. I'm lucky to be living in a relatively safe country, but for women elsewhere, this is how they feel constantly and I honestly can't imagine what else they're going through.

This is so much more common than we think it is. Millions of women have gone through the worst. Women in other countries live in fear and danger of violent men. Young girls are forced into marriage. Women in developed countries are being killed, abused, r*ped by their husband. I could go on.

With everything going on in the world recently, my FYP is flooded with so many Jane Does telling their story. Not only does my heart break for these women and girls, but I feel so so angry. My blood boils when I think about these men who got away with their actions. And when I open the comment sections, the top comments look like this: "Not all men... but always a man", "Bear over man any day", etc. While I wholeheartedly agree with most of these, they all feel sort of resigned and disappointed, which are completely valid, but none of them adequately convey the anger that we feel.

No words can truly describe the anger, the hatred, the loathing that I feel towards these men. Last night I read a post from the suicide watch sub about a woman who felt that her rapist won. These kind of stories make me want to cry and repeatedly punch something.

I don't think that enough people truly grasp the gravity of the situation: what it means to r*pe or sexually assault someone. This shit ruins lives forever to an extent no one can really fathom until they've been through it. Ruined lives x 1 000 000s because this happens to so many women every day. And no matter how I say this, some people will never truly comprehend its significance.

My parents, who I rant to about this, will say that I'm angry because I'm young. I think people are not angry enough. My dad told me that he won't be angry until it happens to his own daughter. This is NOT good enough. As much as I love him, his behaviour is part of the problem, and he's not the only one. We will never progress if we only care about our own, because one thing we've got to understand is that your loved ones aren't safe as long as all women aren't safe.

Some days I feel that being born a woman was a curse. Women suffer so much. I curse biology every day for creating an unequal physical power dynamic between men and women. While some men genuinely do good out there, sometimes I can't help but think we'd be better off without them. In a hypothetical world in which women could procreate, there would be no wars, less misery, and less violence.

Even the "good men" are unable to acknowledge their privilege. The ones who are self-aware enough to do so are rare. My own brother denies that it is dangerous for women to walk alone at night because he's stuck in his bubble of privilege, my dad jokingly calls me a misandrist and gets annoyed whenever I bring up the topic of violence against women - and they're supposed to be the good ones. My friends' grown-up brothers call their own sisters "sluts". We hear about high school boys signing petitions to legalize r*pe in my country. Everything just seems so bleak for us.

I would say that these are dark times for women, but in truth, they always have been.

I've got nobody to rant to, so I posted here. I'm even scared of bringing this up with my close friends because I'm afraid they'd give me that look that we reserve for "crazy people". I'm not the most eloquent writer, so thank you for stopping by to read.

how's r*pe (literally violation of body) deserve the same punishment as false allegations of 🍇. I know false allegations about any crime is wrong and deserve appropriate punishments but saying it deserves equal as to r*pe is misogyny. Also how do we decide that the allegations are false, if we give death to false allegations and then in future it's proved the allegations were indeed true, then what do you do? most of the times, people refer to stagnant cases/not enough evidence as false.

In the second image, they say that women who do false allegations of r*pe should have actual r*pe done to them. I shouldn't even have to explain how the user who said this has mentality of a r*pist.

I don't understand how one of them can call me bad names in front of the other and then when he's not with him, say how sorry he is...

They don't have a problem with me being a feminist, but sometimes their opinions are quite shocking. They said they think every girl wants to be in a relationship just for the sake of sex..

I've known them since childhood, but sometimes they comment on my breasts and how I can't help but look at them. That's why I wanted to know your opinion on whether it's okay or not because it's starting to bother me a lot...

[Question] Why is my every move seen as a "statement"?

Sorry I just need to get this off my chest. I know not all feminists are like this, but I've gotten more than enough comments to warrant a reaction. If I wear makeup I'm feeding into the "male gaze". If I don't wear makeup I'm a pick-me. If I shave, I'm trying too hard for a (hypothetical) man, if I don't shave, I'm making a ground-breaking statement. Each and every thing I do is somehow perceived negatively by both men and women. It seems nothing I do is right or just or progressive enough.

Rant Attitude by asking for medical advice

I'm currently pregnant in my 2nd trimester and I hate how little information we get about our own bodies and choices. I posted in another subreddit asking if my experience with the high-risk doctor was normal since I couldn't find similar experiences and the official guidelines suggests something else. The response I got was to basically not question the doctor because they know better and to go "about my merry way" and just accept what they say. The information I found suggested an increase in risk but not that it was diagnostic. The paper I found on the subject suggested a risk of 48% so about half accurate. Official sites/organizations do not recommend this test as the standard and the standard test is simple and harmless.

It felt weird being told by other women to shut up and be happy about a diagnosis. Why should I be happy to have an illness/condition?

All I can think is if I were a man if this would be seen as me being involved in my own care and staying informed vs me as a woman being defiant for asking questions and challenging authority.

Behind a crazy woman is a crazier man

I really need to rant about this so hear me out. The other day I was laying down and boredly scrolling through my phone before a news channel came across my screen where the headline wrote about a mother of 8 having killed and butchered her own husband. I remember before even giving the news reporter a chance to speak, I immediately muttered to myself something along the lines of “he definitely did something” not even a second later, the reporter describes how he had been abusing her for years. The reporter even went on to say that he had become physically abusive of her and that she had feared for her life being in danger as he had literally been assaulting and choking her. And yet the news framed her out as though she was the crazy one, obviously not wanting to mention what the fuck she must have endured for those years to get to that point. No wonder I immediately clocked it without even having to hear the context. This shit is just so damn predictable. I mean we hear this stuff all the time right? Behind every crazy woman is a crazier man who just pushed her to the brink. She’s not even crazy, she’s just a reactive victim but no one wants to say that.

Have you guys watched or read, The housemaid? Throughout the film/book, the wife is seen as this crazy psycho bitch who’s abusive and manipulative whilst her husband is framed as this kind, broken and trapped man and throughout it, we’re led to wonder why such a sweet man would settle for such an evil bitch when he could do so much better? Spoilers so don’t read ahead if you actually want to read or watch it but it turns out, the husband was actually a violent, abusive sadist who’d torture the wife and eventually drove her to the brink. I know it’s a movie but oh my GOD, it’s reality. I mean if we’re gonna talk about movies Jennifer’s body makes me think of this kinda stuff too if you look at the movie from a deeper lens rather than taking it through face value but I won’t go too deep into that right now.

Furthering in on this, a historical icon of mine, Giulia Tofana was an Italian woman living in the 17th century whom created a tasteless, colorless, and odorless arsenic-based poison known as Aqua Tofana. She masked the poison inside cosmetic items so women could hide it on their dressing tables without a husband or family member suspecting. She sold the poison largely to women trapped in abusive, violent, or unwanted marriages during a time when divorce was illegal and women had few legal rights. She committed the biggest female led mass poisoning in history as she wiped out hundreds of men through the decades before she was eventually found out and served the death penalty. Call her a psycho crazy bitch if you will, I think she was a saviour. A hero even. She didn’t kill men because she hated them or some bullshit, she did what she did stemming from an act of self defence. She had her reasons. You cannot even begin to compare her to other serial killers and when I say other serial killers, I obviously men.

Okay I’m lowkey doing too much but my point is, men are full of shit and I will always back up a woman for her rights and wrongs because in a good portion of cases, her “wrongs” were just self defence or reactive. Thanks for listening to my Ted talk. I could rant more but it’s 1:30am and I’m brain dead atm

I am tired of existing as a woman (ranting)

I am a 24 years old woman. Since I remember I was always a feminist even when i didnt know what feminism is. Then i started to learn more about it and started seeing patriarchy everywhere. I am genuinely losing my mind sometimes. I am happy and hopeful at home. But when i go out in public, those dirty stare of men, husbands who doesnt help their wives, even men existing started really bothering me. when i see a man who seem melancholic at hbf, i just think what reason u can have to be depressed? u have nothing to worry about. ofc everyone worry about economics. but the industry works for u. even the man who lives in my head sometimes assume men are better at some stuff. i dont believe that but thaat voice is ingrained in my brain. i just ignore it. i cannot stop being raged. i am in mechanical engineering study, and i had an internship and it was awful. i was on the field with blue collar men. there was only two women, one chemical engineer, one intern as me. i was going to workers and ask them what they r doing what is the process, they would try to flirt me or talk nonsense outside of work. one of them even told me to not talk to him unless necessary bc he had a promise w his wife to not talk to opposite gender unless necessary. EXCUSE ME? not that i would be interested in you with those 5 teeth in your mouth and the fact that u r probably weighing less than me, i am trying to learn. I was a WOMAN first, then MAYBE an intern. but male interns didnt have that problem. even the boss was saying he is against women working. and he was giving advice and talking about his own journey (he probably is unqualified for the job) and at one point he turned to two male interns and told them their carrier is more important bc at some point women marry and have kids but men should earn more. I just wanted to disappear or live in the woods. I thought about dropping out after that and choose a field that is "more suitable for women". i am very insecure about everything and i didnt had a woman figure around me who was working and confident and carrier seeking. all i had was housewives and even my mom is sometimes acting misogynst and most of my insecurities come from her. she always talks don to herself and us, whenever i have an idea of business, she always says "who would buy from us, who are we even?". but when my brother decided to run a private school they were so down for it and supporting.(it didnt happen but anyways) i dont think they are even aware of it. dad always tell me to go after job or intern opportunities and learn stuff about my field, but he always talks down on women he doesnt even know. mostly about outfits. There is a voice inside me always saying i am dumb and men are better and i am so afraid and anxious to graduate and work in my field. even doing a research or watching a video about ME on yt, i come across men almost all the time and i get rage out of it. the thoughts start to spiral into how we live in patriarchy and how womena re suppressed, how my family tried to suppress me when i was a teenager (becoming a woman, being a little girl was fine). i just lose hope and simply want to not be alive. i dont wanna kms but i dont wanna live in this world either. i explain my concerns to my family but they dont seem to get it, even they say good stuff about it. then my dad makes a comment about some woman and then like, i am a woman aswell? why are you doing this? sometimes i just wanna disappear and never talk to them again considering they disappointed me and keep diappointing me in so many aspects.

Every day men harm rape and murder women. Every week they kill their whole family. But still men will use the Clancy case as the example that we’re no better than them. Is it just pure low intelligence
