[----CLOSED----] Fix: reinstalled with fedora media writer and "keep home folder", existing data was lost (not a problem for me), installed nvidia driver via the gui, so far so good, GPU is detected and working.

Will update if it fails again

Does anyone have a clue about what is going on ?

Im kind of lost i dont know where to start..

Searching "fedora is slow" doesn't get me anywhere.

This is the second time this happened on this laptop, the first time I reinstalled fedora and that obviously fixed it but now its back again.

Im running fedora on other machines and its rock solid !

Spec : P14S Gen2 i7-1185 T500 32gb RAM (dual channel) Fedora 44 (GNOME) This is basically a fresh install (maybe 1month with very little use) no modification, no messing with driver as I didn't really need the gpu

Discussion Setting `intel_pstate=passive` increased my battery life from 8 hours to ~11 hours (3.4 W average consumption)

24 Upvotes

Note that I am using Lunar Lake with LPDDR5x (results may vary).

For users with Sandy Bridge and later CPU (for Intel, docs) (for AMD, refer to Kernel document on amd_pstate).

intel_pstate is a part of the CPU performance scaling subsystem in the Linux kernel.

By default, intel_pstate is in "Active Mode" (intel_pstate=active):

the driver bypasses the scaling governors layer of CPUFreq and provides its own scaling algorithms for P-state selection

Meanwhile, intel_pstate=passive:

If the driver works in this mode, the scaling_driver policy attribute in sysfs for all CPUFreq policies contains the string intel_cpufreq. Then, the driver behaves like a regular CPUFreq scaling driver. That is, it is invoked by generic scaling governors when necessary to talk to the hardware in order to change the P-state of a CPU (in particular, the schedutil governor can invoke it directly from scheduler context).

This can be achieved by appending intel_pstate=passive to the Kernel arguments using rpm-ostree kargs:

```bash rpm-ostree kargs --append-if-missing=intel_pstate=passive
for normal Fedora
sudo grubby --update-kernel=ALL --args=intel_pstate=passive ```
You can check the power consumption with
bash awk \'{print $1*1e-6 " W"}\' /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/power_now
This reads /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/power_now and converts it to Watts (W).
In case of Lunar Lake, one can achieve power consumption to as low as 3.4 W.
Support Display Glitch on Fedora KDE 44
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
12 Upvotes
Hey folks, I am a new linux user (about 3 weeks in) and I am currently using fedora KDE 44.
The thing is I usually use dual monitor, and today when I bring my laptop to work (which means I only use the laptop monitor) I noticed this kind of glitch happening (focus on the pointer to see the glitch). And there are also a glitch where sometimes when I put my pointer over a UI button, it displays a rectangle line (much like a hitbox I would say).
I am currently using 150% scaling, tried troubleshooting by myself and I found it that using 100% scaling doesnt produce this glitch.
But 100% is too small for me so are there any way to fix this kind of thing?
Also when I connect my external monitor, this doesnt happen even on 150%
Discussion Do you think EAC Linux v2 will work on Fedora with Nvidia GPUs?
11 Upvotes
For those who didn't know, Epic Games made an announcement about bringing advanced anti-cheat to Linux: https://onlineservices.epicgames.com/news/introducing-easy-anti-cheat-linux-v2
As I read that article, it made me curious how (and if) this will work on Fedora. As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong), Fedora Project doesn't ship or sign Nvidia drivers. Many of us use drivers shipped from RPM Fusion.
The first thing that came to my mind was if Fedora would start shipping and signing the Nvidia drivers. However, that won't be possible due to Fedora's proprietary code philosophy.
So my question is (all opinions aside), will this even be possible on Fedora? Can third party repos such as RPM Fusion be somehow incorporated into this to make it work?
Discussion F46 Change Proposal: Relocate the SELinux policy store to /etc/selinux or something else (System-Wide)
11 Upvotes
TL;DR:
This proposal is based on the current layout that Atomic spins use by default for SELinux. The intention is to make it a standard configuration for the entire Fedora ecosystem and leave it to a single layout.
Leave your thoughts and constructive ideas on Fedora discussion forum or Fedora Hyper kitty.
EDIT: a new option was proposed:
Set a new top-level directory standard (FHS) for operating-system state.
Instead of placing the SELinux policy store in /etc, define a new standard top-level directory, /<name>, for critical system state that must stay associated with the operating system installation or deployment. It would be shared by traditional, atomic and immutable distributions, and by any distribution that adopts it. The package manager databases and the SELinux policy store would be the first components to live there.
Proposed hierarchy.
/<name>/ # It could be /sysstate, /osstate, /state, /osdata ├── rpm/ # RPM database (today /usr/lib/sysimage/rpm) ├── dpkg/ # other package managers, only where present ├── pacman/ └── selinux/ └── targeted/ └── active/ # policy store (/var/lib/selinux or /etc/selinux) ├── any other critical component
Each distribution ships only the subdirectories it uses. Other components are added later, one at a time, if they meet the admission criteria.
News Fedora Podcast 062: What is Fedora Hummingbird Linux?
Post image
7 Upvotes
Scott McCarty and Jorge Castro joined me this week to clear up something I kept getting wrong myself: Hummingbird is not one thing.
Two separate things launched at Summit. Red Hat hardened images went generally available, a set of container images plus an RPM channel. Fedora Hummingbird Linux was announced separately, a bootable image built on the same channel with a Fedora kernel. The distinction Scott landed on is that a container image will never boot. Add a kernel and it becomes a bootable container.
Other ground we covered:
  • Composition is roughly 95 percent Fedora Rawhide, about 1 percent from the major Fedora releases, and the rest pulled forward or wider when Fedora does not have it yet
  • Risk based versus compliance based patching, and why Scott will not call any of this "more secure," only different
  • Why time to exploit collapsing is the actual story behind all of it
  • Jorge on Utah, Bluefin built on Hummingbird, and what it took to make it shippable
  • Switching an existing bootc home lab turns out to be a pointer change
Both guests closed with the same request, so I will pass it along: what would you actually use Fedora Hummingbird Linux for? They are reading, and they say they can pivot fast toward real use cases.
Support I need some help with a new installation:
5 Upvotes
Thinkapd E16 gen 3 ultra 7 256v and 16gb ram.
Win11 pro preinstalled.
If I delete windows 11 pro and I install fedora KDE on the all SSd (512gb)...
Will I be able to reinstall Windows 11 Pro in a dual-boot configuration (in case I need to) without losing the licence?
And if that’s possible, when installing Windows 11 Pro, do I have to format the entire ssd (thereby deleting my Fedora KDE data), or can I install it on a partition and set up a dual-boot system?
Thank you everyone--sorry for my bad english :(
Support Is there any way to hide / change cursor, when using a Digital pen on Fedora KDE?
4 Upvotes
I am using the latest stable version of Fedora with Plasma KDE
Is there any known way to disable or change the cursor when using a drawing pen with Fedora?
From what I was able to find, it is supposed to be a setting in the app one wants to use.
I am using Obsidian with Excalidraw, and normally a crosshair is shown when drawing. There is an option to disable it when using a pen, which I activated. However, the standard cursor still appears. It even overwrites Obsidian's crosshair. So, when I move my mouse/touchpad on the canvas, the crosshair appears, but as soon as I touch it with the pen, the Fedora cursor is back.
It is a small thing, but it is really annoying.
Thanks in advance!
Support First linux mint and now Fedora getting stuck on shutdown and restart. Damaged my power button.
3 Upvotes
I installed linux mint on my DELL laptop precision 3510, it worked fine if it is booted successfully, but sometimes 90% of times it’s stuck on black screen , sometimes it is frozen on login screen. I had to force restart every time.
I thought it’s linux mint compatibility issue on my specific laptop so i installed fedora and same issue happening again
it is getting stuck on while shutting down or restarting sometimes it doesn’t boot and forcing me to force shut down as it doesn’t have battery installed so i have to remove the power cord to force restart… .
And apparently it broke power button and now it doesn’t seem to work anymore.
Support bootc container - systemd/nvidia questions
3 Upvotes
Hi
I’m working on building a containerfile based off of fedora-bootc:45 with KDE/NVIDIA/Steam/RPMFusion codecs baked in with GE-Proton and I’m wondering what the best way to create an installer is?
I’ve seen image-builder, but I’m trying to create an installer with systemd-boot as the bootloader and I’m not sure if that’s even possible yet, has anyone done this?
if not, has anyone done it with bootc install to-filesystem? I had trouble figuring out the correct cmdline to use and what I had to have mounted at install time
also, is there a better way of building the NVIDIA drivers than akmods —force —kernels $(ls /usr/lib/modules)?
Discussion should I use fedora or nobara for game dev on an older gaming laptop?
2 Upvotes
im currently using nobara, as it automatically supports my nvidia graphics card without additional setup (my gpu driver stopped working on fedora when I used to use it and I could never figure out how to fix it). im considering going back to fedora if it would give me better battery life, better experience and performance in unity, and things of that nature. i only use it for homework and game dev, as i play all my games on my steam deck.
Support Do I need two passwords to start Fedora KDE?
1 Upvotes
Situation:
I’ve just carried out a clean installation of Fedora KDE – after removing Windows 11 Pro – on a new ThinkPad E16 Gen 3 with an Ultra 7 256V and 16GB of RAM.
I’ve encrypted the drive using LUKS (I didn’t use it on my old desktop) and have discovered that it asks for two passwords with LUKS.
Is there a way to make it ask for just one of the two passwords?
Also, is there a way to unlock Fedora using my fingerprint? (It works – I managed to register it correctly, but I can’t use it for the first login after switching on the computer.)
Discussion Breaking Easy Anti-Cheat v2
0 Upvotes
Epic Games announced Easy Anti-Cheat v2 for Linux today. You can read about it here if you wish. Fedora Linux is one of the supported distributions. There's also a blog post by Jef Spaleta about it.
Anyhoo. I'm a video gamer that used to use Microsoft Windows. One of the main reasons why I switched from Microsoft Windows to Fedora Linux is to get away from kernel level anti-cheats. I'm not a competitive gamer at all. I either play single-player or online PvE. I specifically chose to avoid purchasing and/or playing games that use them. However, a couple of games that I purchased on Steam to strictly play offline single-player mode also have PvP modes. Both tried to silently add a kernel level anti-cheat via game updates. I would have never had known if there weren't new game reviews complaining about that. The second time was the final push that I needed to get away from Windows and KLACs.
I'm disheartened to see this coming to Fedora Linux. No, the Linux implementation isn't a rootkit, but it still gives kernel access and lets Epic see everything. What exactly do I need to do to prevent this? "Just don't buy a game that uses it," which I've seen elsewhere, is not an acceptable answer. I did exactly that on Windows, and game updates still tried to push it later down the road.
Will disabling Secure Boot and my computers' TPM be enough? From reading the first linked article it seems to be, but I want to make sure. Otherwise I'm going to have to look into alternative OSs.
