PUBLISH MOI Sally Rooney says she can no longer sell books in UK due to Palestine Action support. Irish writer of Normal People says she can no longer receive royalties from British sales and she cancelled UK trip due to fear of arrest.

u/RoySlaterr 2h ago
Well, the govt recently said Israel are performing ethnic cleansing & said we support Free Palestine protests, just don't needlessly reference the ONE that's a terrorist organisation.
Anyone referencing Palestine Action is doing it on purpose to get arrested (to prove a separate point). PA is far from the only way to show support for Palestine.

I don't know why you're getting downvoted.
The golden rule when it comes to UK law is that there are some groups which are completely off limits, and other groups where it's pretty much open season. Zionists are in the former category while Palestinians, trans people, and immigrants are all in the latter.
It's confusing and disheartening to still, in the year 2026, see people expecting the British government to play fair. They've never once played fair in their entire blood-soaked history. This is a government that shoots Irish people--its own citizens--in the back for wanting civil rights. For Christ's sake.

Absolutely nuts. Israel controls the labour party.
58
u/Jesskla 14h ago
They control all of the UK parties except the Greens, which is why there is great investment in smearing Zack Polanski & undermining the Green policies. The mainstream media is controlled by billionaires, labour are class traitors & are just red Tories (although they've been a disgrace since Blair), Russia is funding Reform & the Heritage Foundation is spending a lot of time & money on bringing the Christian nationalist movement to the UK. Not to mention Palantir & the NHS contracts & then JKR cementing the country as the ultimate TERF island. The islamphobia is at frightening levels too, with the hate crimes against Muslims or anyone perceived to be Muslim at dangerous levels, but mostly underreported by the media & unacknowledged by most politicians. Amnesty International released a report about this recently but as with everything else, it has mostly been ignored. The UK is an embarrassment, a cesspool of bigotry & kleptocracy. I hate it here.
20
u/StuartWtf 13h ago
You forgot SNP and Plaid.
SNP have spoken against Israel and called for a free Palestine. Might not be the biggest party in Westminster but they do control one of the countries.

u/Jesskla 8h ago
I wasn't sure about the SNP's current leadership tbh, but I did know about Plaid, that was my bad neglecting to mention them. Some of the Independents too, although Your Party fast became a shambolic mess. Corbyn & Zarah Sultana have been very outspoken respectively. Although Corbyn is pretty toothless when it comes to taking action... Honestly the UK is fucked, Wales Scotland & NI should have their independence at this point, this government is cementing a crushing future for anyone who isn't part of the wealthy elite & they are speed running the destruction of our civil rights.

Just to reiterate: Western countries feel infinitely morally superior to the rest of the world and constantly lecture them on human rights.
Virtually everyone in these countries is firmly convinced that China, Russia, or Iran are the ultimate embodiment of evil compared to them. In their minds, there is a clear narrative of good (the West/NATO countries) versus evil (China, Russia, Iran).
Meanwhile, it is the West that is currently unconditionally supporting a genocide.
27
u/kermeeed 15h ago
Its really crazy talking to mostly (but not only) white people in the west about anything in the world. There is almost no understanding of historical context. No mentions of Colonialism or slavery or anything perpetrated by European empires as a reason for things being the way they are. They refuse to look at the world as anything other than good guys and bad guys.
6
u/ilir_kycb 14h ago
Well, the funny or sad thing about it is that the West (NATO countries) are very clearly the bad guys if you judge them honestly by their own standards.
The extent of the double standards and hypocrisy is simply beyond belief.
But as you said, the level of ignorance combined with an extreme (completely unfounded) confidence in oneâs own opinion is enough to drive you crazy.
And I live among these people; itâs like being surrounded by crazy people who firmly believe the sky is green even though they look up at it every day. And anyone who tells them, âNo, the sky is blueâ, is regarded as a renegade heretic who has been seduced by evil, demonic forces.
1
u/blodo_ 13h ago
The reckoning is hopefully coming. The media can try to manipulate perceptions of reality to keep people thinking that common stances like being anti Israel are not majority opinion, but eventually the silent majority that does hold this opinion will find itself very loud indeed.
4
u/ilir_kycb 12h ago
Yeah, and then, just like with apartheid in South Africa, they'll pretend they've always been against it.
Systemically, absolutely nothing will change.
-6
u/OverCategory6046 12h ago
How are the West very clearly the bad guys?
The West isn't a unified block - there are many non Western countries that are engaged in way more horrifying shit than 90% of Western countries.
3
u/ilir_kycb 12h ago edited 11h ago
Strictly speaking, I'm referring to the imperial core.
And it's not just about the history of individual countries; broadly speaking, they are an alliance of US puppet states. They act in concert to exploit and enslave the rest of the world, and they share a collective responsibility.
Unequal exchange theory posits that economic growth in the âadvanced economiesâ of the global North relies on a large net appropriation of resources and labour from the global South, extracted through price differentials in international trade. Past attempts to estimate the scale and value of this drain have faced a number of conceptual and empirical limitations, and have been unable to capture the upstream resources and labour embodied in traded goods. Here we use environmental input-output data and footprint analysis to quantify the physical scale of net appropriation from the South in terms of embodied resources and labour over the period 1990 to 2015. We then represent the value of appropriated resources in terms of prevailing market prices. Our results show that in 2015 the North net appropriated from the South 12 billion tons of embodied raw material equivalents, 822 million hectares of embodied land, 21 exajoules of embodied energy, and 188 million person-years of embodied labour, worth $10.8 trillion in Northern prices â enough to end extreme poverty 70 times over. Over the whole period, drain from the South totalled $242 trillion (constant 2010 USD). This drain represents a significant windfall for the global North, equivalent to a quarter of Northern GDP. For comparison, we also report drain in global average prices. Using this method, we find that the Southâs losses due to unequal exchange outstrip their total aid receipts over the period by a factor of 30. Our analysis confirms that unequal exchange is a significant driver of global inequality, uneven development, and ecological breakdown.
Unequal exchange of labour in the world economy | Nature Communications
Researchers have argued that wealthy nations rely on a large net appropriation of labour and resources from the rest of the world through unequal exchange in international trade and global commodity chains. Here we assess this empirically by measuring flows of embodied labour in the world economy from 1995â2021, accounting for skill levels, sectors and wages. We find that, in 2021, the economies of the global North net-appropriated 826 billion hours of embodied labour from the global South, across all skill levels and sectors. The wage value of this net-appropriated labour was equivalent to âŹ16.9 trillion in Northern prices, accounting for skill level. This appropriation roughly doubles the labour that is available for Northern consumption but drains the South of productive capacity that could be used instead for local human needs and development. Unequal exchange is understood to be driven in part by systematic wage inequalities. We find Southern wages are 87â95% lower than Northern wages for work of equal skill. While Southern workers contribute 90% of the labour that powers the world economy, they receive only 21% of global income.
And that doesn't even take into account wars, coups, or puppet dictators installed by the West.

u/kermeeed 13h ago
I find this so hard to articulate but its like the moment they find out something is bad in this world was done by a western country its just done. Like that individual acknowledged its bad so it must be over for the whole world.
Imperialism is bad but its not still happening. We got gay marriage in the last 15-20 years in some western countries so its always been there. Civil rights happened but like we did it, we're better and like rhe above its always been there.
But no understanding of the mechanisms that were able to wrest those things for us. And no acknowledgement of how we strip the world of those mechanisms.

It's really strange to witness as someone who has more complex ethnical background (ukrainian/russian family and then anti-zionist jews from multiple european countries). The same people who will be like "this country's politics means all the citizens who haven't left the country 30 years ago should die" are then either supporting active genocide and/or lecturing about how we shouldn't generalise the entire popullation based on a few bad apples. đŤ Â
Don't get me even started on how normalised it is for a non-jewish person to call me, a jew, an antisemite while downplaying actual antisemitism.Â

>Meanwhile, it is the West that is currently unconditionally supporting a genocide.
Oh man, you might want to read up into which countries support the Rapid Support Force in Sudan, who are actively engaging in genocide, who supports the Myanmar civil war & genocide, who supports the Houthis and Hamas, etc. Russia is actively kidnapping children and committing mass atrocities in Ukraine. Myanmar is actively engaged in killing off the Rohingya and other ethnic groups.
The West is not innocent, but acting like China, Russia, Iran and the rest are innocent is disingenuous. The rest of the world is also capable (and does) of supporting genocide, civil war and other atrocities.

No. Just like AIPAC, Israel funds zionist politicians in Britain through a variety of under-handed and brazen financial support as well as propaganda smears that are propagated through their client journalists in the media. Case in point, the zionist Telegraph newspaper published fake quotes from an activist in the Green Party on the eve of a crucial by-election that they lost by a few percent just a few days ago. The paper also published an antisemitic and Islamophobic cartoon on the same week.

the shitty response to this in r/unitedkingdom makes sense - that sub has been astroturfed to hell - but to see the same response in r/books was surprising and disheartening. saying âwell, supporting them is illegal, so whatâs the story hereâ kind of ignores the question of whether that proscription was justified. thereâs a pretty slippery slope that the proscription of PA has created.
the language used to justify the decision was intentionally vague, and their proscription order was bundled in with two neo-nazi groups - one of which was a self-described death cult. there was also the unprecedented nature of retroactively adding of acts of terrorism to the protestersâ charges, despite their actions happening before PA had been designated. this has never been done before, and sets a pretty dangerous precedent.
even if we ignore all of this, there is a considerable history of anti-war protestors occupying military bases, often on behalf of organisations who organise them. to highlight the frustrating lack of consistency here, kier starmer himself defended a man charged in 2004 with breaking into an air base and attempting to set fire to an aircraft. he argued that his actions were legal because they were made to stop an âillegal warâ. given that israelâs campaign in gaza has long since included war crimes and actions deemed to be illegal as per international law, why would that same defence not apply here?
even if you can somehow argue that the proscription was both above board and morally justifiable based on the letter of the law, there is the question of whether terrorism in and of itself canât ever be morally justified in the context of its aims and methods. the suffragettes unequivocally engaged in terrorist acts - including bombing government offices. knowing this, would you then argue that they shouldnât have done what they did, knowing in hindsight what they achieved as a result? absolutely not.
far too many people are confusing the law with morality, and i donât like the consequences of muddying the waters when it comes to what is, and is not, terrorism.
0
u/itoddicus 4h ago
Are you saying the end justifies the means?
I believe Israel is committing genocide.
I also believe people are never justified in resorting to violence.
How many buildings burned, and how many people killed are you ok with to end the genocide in Palestine?
6
u/Drong0bones 15h ago
Still not sure why these were proscribed? All I've heard is that there are good reasons for it but the good reasons have never been revealed?
7
u/OverCategory6046 12h ago
Sure, I'll tell you.
They've caused millions in ÂŁ in property damage - they broke into RAF Brize Norton and vandalised a fighter jet. They vandalised Elbit systems and broke a security guard's back with a sledgehammer - sprayed a security guard with a fluid they said was acid & distributed "The Underground Manual" which instructed members on how to create cells & engage in direct action (vandalism) against private companies.
8
u/Drong0bones 12h ago
Thank you. Vandalising property doesn't make someone a terrorist though - especially when that property may be used to commit war crimes in palestine - as for the bloke who hit the security guard with a hammer he obviously needed to be dealt with for his violent crime but one violent criminal doesn't make a terrorist group surely? Yvette cooper said there was a lot more to it and that they couldn't say what at the time ..they still haven't said what else was going on was my point.
7
u/OverCategory6046 12h ago
Don't shoot the messenger, but under the Terrorism Act of 2000, it does. Copy pasting it:
Section 1, terrorism is defined as the use or threat of action designed to influence the government or intimidate the public to advance a political, religious, racial, or ideological cause. Qualifying actions include serious violence, property damage, endangering life, posing health/safety risks, or disrupting electronic systems. Firearms or explosives use is automatically classed as terrorism
I believe it's the pattern that did it, they were getting more and more violent and ramping up the attacks. I think it was over the top to classify them, but there were many causes that support Palestine that weren't so extreme.
