Questions is normal printer paper okay?

I’m planning on binding the anatomy of a fall and the cheapest printing option for me is at my university, will just normal printer paper take away from the final product? Just found out about this hobby and community and it seems so fun!

Halfway through my vanity project...

Finished these after a loooong session tonight - 2 out of the 4-5 books of my long-planned vanity project of making a book collection out of my longfics. All from different fandoms written over the last 8-ish years so I'm having fun with various styles and colours as well as cringing at some very old prose lmao

Super excited and proud of these. I actually commissioned art for the first time this year bc I wanted to bind a book with an illustration in it🥹 I will definitely do a photoshoot in better lighting once they're all done😭

It was also one of my first times using a cricut machine. I discovered I LOVE weeding - it's like that satisfaction of peeling dried paint or PVA glue!! The next thing I want to improve is edges - I usually don't touch them because I have had awful experiences with a pen knife, but tried sanding the fore edge a bit this time with okay results...

For my 6th bind, I finally chose one of the fics I've written! And it's huge 🤣 I can’t believe this pretty monster is mine.

I'm obsessed with all the moon details and the pink thread 😍 and I can't wait to bind another one of my fics

I just found out about this subreddit! I wish it was around when I made this a literal decade ago (which I’m trying to not think too hard about). I remember the biggest pain in the butt was fine tip sharpieing in the runes along the boarder on the front. Not pictured: the table of contents page and its dragon that I was very proud of finding a png for.

Hello, I am new to this.

How can I use the stich binding meathod with signatures and stuff but using a glue and a paperback covet not hard cover, is that ok?? And can I use these gluing machines to attach the cover to the spine?? Will that causes the spine afterword to cave in?

Typesetting Thoughts on qr codes placement for podcast bookbinds?

Thumbnail

Hello! I've created a few different books so far in the hopes of, after getting decent enough that I'm not worried it'll immediately fall apart, putting together a book bind of the podcast The Magnus Archives!

Now, I'm trying to decide how I'd like to include the digital aspect into the book itself.

I've got a few different ideas, but I'd like to hear from the people!

Which of these would look best for a handbound podcast script series?

Option 1: Place it with the episode title page. I don't mind getting every code for every episode, but I worry the links make the episode title page a little clunky? I want the scripts to kind of look professional. Like official archival documents.

Option 2: I include a page before or after each episode title page with just the codes. I think this would be simple and effective, just scan and start reading, but that is an additional 40 pages (per season) to consider.

Option 3: Nix the code per episode idea and just include a code for the season/series playlist on the back of the book/end pages. This would be the easiest of all of them, but I would have to dig through the playlist for specific episodes.

Any ideas? Opinions? Am I overthinking this?

My printer suffered so I could print off this 300k fic

Had to split the fic into 2 parts. I stitched up book 1 last night and I plan to stitch book 2 tonight.

I'm still very new to this hobby and I've done a couple of hardcovers since starting and this is my biggest undertaking yet, but I'm excited!

Questions Foil quill design over acrylic paint

So, I’m finishing up a typeset and thought it would be really cool to try something with the page edges. Originally I was planning to gild them, but since this is a mer AU fic, I then thought it would be cool to have a scale design on the pages.

My thought was that since I have acrylic paint, I could try painting the edges and then use my foil quill for the scale design so it stands out more. But I haven’t found any tutorials or videos doing this.

Has anyone tried this before? Did it turn out well? I’m willing to experiment if no one has, but I thought I would check with the community first.

Questions Jumping into the deep end

Well, I have never fanbound anything before. Or bookbound, either, unless you count small shoddily-made notebooks put together at work during bored breaks. And yet, I've just finished setting up my first fic-to-be-bound in signatures! 772 total pages, color illustrated, watermarked. Will it come out correctly? Probably not. BUT it's a learning experience.

I'v found guides on typesetting, signature arrangement, sewing, glueing — but not a lot on printing itself. How are y'all printing these out, and what paper weight would you recommend? I'm hoping to print in color to preserve the (250 holy shit) illustrations, but I'm aware that could massively increase the cost and work load.

(Frankly, I'd ask if anyone is willing to review my typeset, but I'm not sure anyone wants to slog through that lol)

Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Questions How much does it usually cost?

(Translated with Google)

So, I'm starting to get interested in this hobby, and I was even starting to think about saving up to buy everything I need.

But, and here's my question, I don't really know how much is spent

So, approximately how much money do you spend on this?

Typesetting Ideas for getting WEIRD with the typesetting?

Hello! Did my first book bind (currently letting it dry overnight) and I've fallen in love with the hobby! Unfortunately, I'm a bit poor financially, aren't we all, so I'm going to do some typesetting for future binds!

One of these that I'd love to bind is the podcast The Magnus Archives, and it has many characters that kinda have effects on reality- one such entity is known for basically generating madness, fractals and patterns, just plain old WEIRDness. And I would love for that to be reflected in the text!

As I said, I'm very new to all of this, but does anyone know of a way to make it weird but readable?

I was thinking a couple of letters are randomly colored when they speak? Or changing the font, text size, or italics, on and off?

I'm open to ideas! Would love to hear from some experienced binders on how to make things a little strange!

My first complete bind

For quite some time I have been just watching and learning (and trying to find paper and the needed supplies and all that), but I finally finished my very first actual fanbind!

The fic is "the light of distant stars", a fic from a very tiny fandom of a chinese book/drama-series (The Lost Tomb/Daomu Biji) tha was written for me by a friend, and that I wanted to bind for quite some time.

I designed the cover (in PS) and also the typeset (which I realize, I did not take any pictures of) and I made so many mistakes and learned so much. Cutting the textblock was an ordeal and it's still wonky and weeding that design was also an experience, I'll defintely not do something that intricate again, some of the little details got lost and the lines were so thin that they came off and I had to put them back (that's why some of them are so wobbly), just like some parts of the finer text. I only have a Cricut joy, so the whole cover had to be smaller than 15 cm. And then I measured and measured and still managed to put the back cover on slightly askance and burned a part of the frame because I had to go over the small text again... But the htv worked so well, it peeled off without much of a problem (just one letter of the backtext came off) and it looks so nice and shiny!

All in all I am very proud of it, I love how the title turned out and it actually opens and closes so well. And now I wanna do so many more!

Question about etiquette

I was wondering what's considered the right etiquette regarding binding a fic by an author whose account has been deleted or who isn't replying to comments and/or direct messages, and posting pics of the bind to social media. I have some fics I'd love to bind & post on instagram (personal use only, not for an exchange or gift, but photos shared to a public social media account) but the authors have either purged their whole existence from social media or haven't been online in years and aren't responding. Thanks in advance!
