Discussion Just watched Operation Sunburst.

Holy shit! It's a fantastic animation. Do have some gripes about how they twisted the lore a bit. But man, it's really well done and showed how dangerous the BOS was against the NCR. It does favour the rangers a bit too much but I would recommend it.

That said, apparently, due to fans arguing with the creator, they vowed to never do fallout again.

He did the same thing with 40k, fans bitched so he left.

It's genuinely baffling that someone could think the fucking Fallout fanbase would be any better lmao, double points because it's a New Vegas thing.

Games Workshop shutting down fan animations didn’t help.

But in this case it was fans who pushed SODAZ out when he got an offer from GW. Yes I’m still sad about that, I loved his space marine animations.

As the other guy said, GW actually gave him an offer.

It was straight up the fans who caused it.

Fans arguing with SODAZ is so stupid, this shows fans are can be bad just as much as corporations making bad decisions to make money.

Honestly, I personally find the fight little bit silly, especially the part about NCR berserkers, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate good animation.

Wasn't he mostly praised? Did he expect to get only generic "SODAZ good" comments, and no discussion on the subject?

Damn really? Shame as it’s the best fan film I’ve seen. Hope that creator ends up ignoring the haters and makes some cool shit.

Too late for that, he vowed never to do a Fallout animation again because of the hate.

Sodaz always does banger animations looking forward to his new stalker animation.

He's doing a Stalker thing? Holy fuck I need that now.

He also made an intro for The Menace, tactical sci-fi wargame, and it shows.

It really does.

No wonder I like that intro so much! The developers of Menace chose good hiring SODAZ for that intro.

I also liked how it was intelligent in its approach to combat. Logistics, resource management, specialized units, tactical objectives, adaptive strategy, and most importantly focusing on initiative as a key part of combat.

I disliked how the only role of NCR regulars was running into machinegun fire and dying like VC in bad Vietnam War movies, just to deplete BoS ammo and distract them while the real professionals do their job. I understand that the whole NCR lore is "hahaha InComPeTEnt", but when filmed it looks much sillier than when it's just said. Nobody would do that.

Honestly, only silly thing about tactics was the whole berserker squad. Everything else was smart feom both sides and clever use of what they had.

In my opinion SODAZ made a great one, there, and that ranger stuff had to happen because how else those NCR human waves were to overwhelm Paladins that powerful? Shortage of supplies alone wouldn't cut it.

Only thing I think that was missing is that badass music that was used in the beginning, when paladin patrol went on to repel the first probing attack. Should've used more of that, I think.

Only gaming fans can bully a creator making fantastic content into giving up on their fanbase

It's so embarrassing and tiring being a fan of anything popular because of the absolute rabid fans ruining fucking everything lol

Rip it was a great animation project from a master animator

I didn't quite like it because every single thing the brotherhood does is immediately countered by the NCR, which i don't like from a narrative standpoint.

But tis a shame there won't be more

IMO it makes sense NCR would have counters. They are the attackers, they decide when the engagement happens. Propably spend some time just preparing for everything

If I remember my timeline right, Operation Sunburst takes place after nearly two whole decades of both active warfare and Cold War-esque relations between the BoS and the NCR. I'd be more upset if they didn't have counters against their main geopolitical enemy after that long.

Of course, but I didn't mean counter as in 'the NCR brought the right tools because they understood the brotherhood', it felt to me more like the brotherhood were making strong tactical decisions immediately snubbed by one or two guys, which is not how war is won

1

u/Balloon_Police16 1h ago

Preparation is one thing, it's entirely another thing when:

  • A full squad of jetpack assault paladins are taken completely out of the fight by one guy

  • When the brotherhood, even after making a countercharge with surprise heavy armour, can't complete even one objective (taking out the heavy weapons teams) because theyre checked by four guys, of which we only ever see one fall

  • Said surprise heavy armour is immediately decimated in the counter offensive without completing any objectives, and,

  • Their last hail mary, the Helios One reactivation, only kills one other ranger

Yeah I know the NCR are supposed to win, but the balance could've at least swung more closely, the brotherhood could've been thrown a bone and destroyed the heavy weapons teams. Instead every strategem they deploy is immediately snubbed by a few guys

I think you need to watch the video again. It's not just one guy who takes out jetpack squad. It's an entire ridge of 1st Recon snipers targeting their fuel tanks

Those "four guys" who checked their advance were elite rangers using AM-rifles to snipe them from long distance. You don't just stand in open waiting to be slowly picked apart.

I would also point out that the offensive did break the main formation. This is like complaining that push "failed" to capture backline artillery. They also did reach them, and were about to execute the anti-tank company (who had been pinned until then), it was only arrival of said elite rangers that allowed said AT-company to survive.

Even with the failure to kill AT-team, entire point of NCR strategy at that point is not to push: it's to secure AT-team and run. As Palladin correctly notes: They are engaged in war of attrition, and despite NCR taking heavy casualties... they got more people than the chapter. NCR is losing battallions, as noted by later discussion.

Also, "immediately countered" is simplifying a lot. NCR basically needs to throw entire squad of troopers as a distraction and force Brotherhood to take cover, risking their Rangers. Even then those bots last all the way to night when we see the next offensive by NCR.

I would also point out, that Brotherhood did manage to take out most of the AT-teams. That is why it takes so long for NCR to commit to last push, they explicitly mention this.

Oh, and... here is a thing. Helios One was not reactivated. They just activated last of the bots that were located inside.

He vowed to not do fallout again? Goddamnit

Though where did he say that?

8

u/TheeBaconmandos 7h ago

I remember him announcing that in his patreon before he finished Sunburst. Dunno if he’s said it anywhere else.

3

u/Rollen73 3h ago

What did he say?

2

u/TheeBaconmandos 2h ago

If I remember correctly, there were a set of upset Fallout fans complaining/criticizing their work (maybe lore-jerks) and it was sapping their enjoyment of making the animation. They’d finish the video, but not do another one on Fallout.

Sodaz gave the Fallout fandom the first good meal they've had in a decade and they hated him for it.

5

u/DistributionWorried3 6h ago

My favorite aspect was how smart each faction was in the battle.

5

u/SuperTerram 8h ago

It's way over the top, but an excellent piece of animation work.

3

u/Affectionate_Edge472 8h ago

hard agree with it being a bit over the top, but to make a fight hit its full potential I guess you have to

u/vv04x4c4 1h ago

It was fucking great, what was the lore people were crying about?
