🧢 I voted CAP!

Only that which is possible under physics can exist. Imagination has no such limitations.

What can you that couldn't plausibly come about?

To move something with mass at the speed of light

That would require infinite energy that is impossible

Good thing that's not the method I gave

10

u/potato_davi 🏅 Century Club · 3,180 XP 1d ago

Ok, I can imagine infinite energy, and that's impossible, so no, it doesn't matter how much technology we're talking about, there are things you just can't create

u/ThunderLord1000 🤖 Vote Machine · 18,680 XP 1d ago

I never said anything about creating energy.

Converting matter to light then back is fundamentally not transporting the thing so much as it just recreating the thing in another spot, if you can convert the matter to light them back to matter why would you need to convert the matter to lighr in the first place, just continue converting the light directly into matter, plus you just get energy losses because no conversion of energy is ever 100% efficient, there will always be losses in the form of heat generated or mechanical/friction required or light escaping from the system through quantum effects

Ehhhh thats more a nuclear/chemistry/physics problem depending on what the other person is refering to, if they mean in the sense of creating rhe gold that reqires nucleosynthesis to build a gold atom and no biological process will ever be able to do that

reversing entropy

3

u/ThunderLord1000 🤖 Vote Machine · 18,680 XP 1d ago

Correct me if I'm wrong, wouldn't that just be returning objects/compounds to a state thought to be unreturnable to after a certain process?

1

u/athaznorath 🏅 Century Club · 5,225 XP 1d ago

yeah, and ultimately being able to stop the heat death of the universe. i'm not saying it's totally implausible science will ever have a solution, but i think it's... unwise? to just assume science can "eventually" fix any possible problem. there's a wonderful youtuber i watch who is also a physicist, angela collier, and she said something (i forget which video this was in) about how people don't act to stop global warming because "science will be able to reverse it eventually!" when that simply isn't true. technology is not magic and it isn't limitless.

1

u/lord_hydrate 🏅 Century Club · 4,780 XP 21h ago

Now i dont think we can reverse entropy but its potentially likely that if rhe expansion of the universe slows and gravity wins out eventually the universe may be a fully closed system in which it can just keep cycling through the process of expansion and compression technically meaning entropy across the universe would technically be 0 over time

Being Superman.

Humans can't fly. Humans can't summon lasers from their eyes. Humans can't have x-ray vision. Humans can't shrug off bullets (point blank, no armor). Humans have a lifting weight limit.

It is fun to imagine but impossible to create, even if we tried. If it were possible, major countries would already have Superman-esque bioengineered super soldiers. They don't.

Simulate a universe as complex as ours at the same rate as our universe

2

u/xMalvazar 🏅 Century Club · 6,360 XP 1d ago

They might call that the Matrix which is very possible with enough time thanks to AI (I know the copyrights might come for me) but AI can create eventually a simulation of our world if they haven't already.

1

u/Brother-Captain 🤖 Vote Machine · 15,775 XP 17h ago

I said at the same rate as ours with the same complexity. There is no AI which could ever do that, I’m afraid.

2

u/xMalvazar 🏅 Century Club · 6,360 XP 6h ago

I can ask the AI to dumb it down to match ours but I don't know if it will listen... unless it has a ego and wants to prove it.

1

u/Brother-Captain 🤖 Vote Machine · 15,775 XP 5h ago

If you think AI can build a computer the size of the universe or larger, be my guest

2

u/xMalvazar 🏅 Century Club · 6,360 XP 4h ago

You might be too young to know, but we had a half ***** program called second life, it was a choppy job but you could nearly do anything (it was neat and annoying too). Now we have AI that can finish it better. Now AI isn't quite there at the moment but it will be with time. It's just a matter of time and now with AI it's almost possible to simulate life... of course this would be a simulation as the post said...

There are already games that give similar playthroughs so it's a no brainer that given some time and "if" directed/told to... AI would whip something up... kinda like the movie Freeguy.

0

u/Brother-Captain 🤖 Vote Machine · 15,775 XP 4h ago

Again, I said an entire universe simulated at the same rate and with the same complexity as our own. Our being able to simulate life or make a program where you can do nearly anything is completely meaningless here. AI being able to simulate life is completely meaningless here. AI cannot simulate the entire universe at the same rate and with the same complexity as ours. Nothing can. Our ability to create games that look accurate or simulations that accurately predict real-life interactions means nothing because they either do not match the complexity of our universe or don't simulate the entire thing at once at the same rate as reality.

0

u/Brother-Captain 🤖 Vote Machine · 15,775 XP 2h ago

Do you think it is possible for a computer smaller than the universe to simulate an exact replica of our universe at the same rate as our universe, and if so, how would it store the data required to perform the calculations so that it is smaller than our universe, and how would it avoid collapsing into a black hole or melting from the heat overload?

🧢 I voted CAP!

Sometimes the laws of physics just say no.

2

u/Uwantmoneyugetnutty ✍️ Contributor · 7,925 XP 22h ago

That is probably true, but also we are not even close to fully understanding how physics works. Give it a few thousand years and we might(or might not) have something that could change the laws of physics. Romans would have called you crazy if you told them it was possible to go to the moon, talk to somebody 2000 miles away instantly, or create a machine smart enough to get a bachelors degree by itself

2

u/BroderFelix 🏅 Century Club · 3,765 XP 19h ago

We know properties of physics that would hinder certain imaginative scenarios.

I like to think of it as we as humans can be capable of arranging atoms in every possible way. Someone has cancer? Rearrange the atoms so they don’t anymore. Obviously this is not even remotely close to possible right now, but give it a few thousand years or less with ai. 150 years ago we were riding horses and fighting each other with muskets. Now we have machines smart enough to get a bachelors degree on their own

If a great scientist says something is eventually possible, he is most likely correct. If he says something is forever impossible, he is almost certainly wrong.

1

u/OnYourHonor 💪 Unstoppable · 37,090 XP 5h ago

I will add to this conversation thread a few "Laws" proposed by the famous sci-fi author Arthur C. Clarke with a particular emphasis on the Third Law.

• First Law: "When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right..."

• Second Law: "The only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them, into the impossible."

• Third Law: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

How do you feel about these concepts as they pertain to the original statement?
