The 1920 rule is Rigged: how Kuwait's citizenship revocations threaten the security of every citizen (regardless of citizenship class)

The ongoing wave of citizenship reviews and mass revocations in Kuwait is constantly framed by authorities as a necessary cleanup to root out fraud, unverified ancestry, and illegal naturalizations.

If you analyze the actual historical baseline required for Article 1 citizenship, the standard being used is not just flawed, it is an impossible administrative trap that threatens the civil existence of every single citizen in the country.

Under the 1959 Nationality Law, original citizens must prove their family was settled in Kuwait prior to 1920. Demanding strict, state-backed physical paperwork from that era is a standard designed to fail.

1. Pre-1920 Kuwait Was an Era of Oral History

Before 1920, Kuwait was a small port town centered around pearl diving, seafaring, and regional migration. There was no modern state apparatus, no central civil registry, no birth certificates, and no identity cards.

A tiny fraction of wealthy merchant families or major landowners preserved handwritten property deeds (wathaiq) or dhow trade ledgers. For the vast majority of ordinary families in kuwait, life left no formal paper trail. Expecting people to produce century-old government documentation from a pre-bureaucratic society is historically illiterate.

2. How Citizenship Was Actually Granted in 1959

When the Nationality Committees were formed in the late 1950s and 1960s, they knew that physical pre-1920 archives did not exist for the general population of kuwait.

Article 1 status was granted based on:

  • Community and Witness Testimony (Shahada): Local elders and neighbors verbally testifying to a family living inside or around the old city walls.
  • Lineage and Social Recognition (Nasab): Public consensus and tribal or urban ties.

The entire legal foundation of Article 1 status relied on oral history. Treating the absence of 100 year old paper records as automatic "proof of fraud" today rewrites history and ignores the exact system the state used to build its citizen body.

3. The Structural Implications for ALL Kuwaiti Citizens

This is not an isolated issue affecting only a few fringe cases. The widespread use of executive decrees to strip nationality retroactively creates a dangerous crisis that impacts the entire nation:

  • Permanent Precarity for Everyone: If physical pre-1920 proof is required to guarantee your status, almost no family in Kuwait is truly safe. If the state decides to audit your family file tomorrow, your citizenship depends entirely on administrative discretion rather than secure constitutional rights.

1920 was an era of oral history. Enforcing modern documentary audits on a century-old baseline creates a selective mechanism where anyone's legal identity can be erased overnight.

When the criteria for keeping your citizenship are arbitrary, no citizen is actually secure.

Punishing families for administrative records that never existed a hundred years ago is a precedent that jeopardizes the basic rights of every Kuwaiti citizen.

i have article 1 first degree citizenship by establishment. i know im not safe, hence i immigrated to the UK. people need to wake up and smell the coffee. no one is safe. there is a saying:

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew

Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me. [1]

She's an orphan both parents dead, her mom kuwaiti and dad iranian. Born and raised in kuwait.

Her mom forced her to wear the hijab ever since she was seven or eight years old but when her mom died she took it off. Girls from lower social classes in kuwait are always forced into the hijab at such a young age. Her parents died when she was just 17-20 she's been an orphan ever since.

She has lived in kuwait all her life. Her family was well off, she had to work to earn her living. So she started a tiktok influencer career and then transitioned into acting in khaleeji television shows and theatrical productions. It was her livelihood, her source of income.

Three weeks ago, Kuwait's Ministry of Interior deported her without any court order or criminal charges. It really breaks my heart. She did not deserve that. It's inhumane and cruel.

deporting the child of a kuwaiti mother (without any court order or criminal charges) used to be unheard of. morally and ethically, it used to be off limits.

She was only 22 or 23 years old when they deported her. Why deport an orphan in her early 20s?

She does not even speak iranian or have living family members in iran.

Desperate for any advice/looking for a shed of hope ig

I really hope I do get some advice or hope…

I’m an exmuslim, F early 20s, Arab-ish/expat who resides in the Gulf who still lives with her family.

I’d like to know if there’s any way to gain independence from a strict household and if anyone has done it. I can’t simply leave as I’m financially dependent on them, can’t find a job, and can’t leave as my sponsor is my family.

For the most part, I’m concerned about my safety due to my father. Pretty explosive regarding anything and tends to start getting mad about how I don’t pray, makes threats to my life and a bunch of other silly things.

I have thought about marriage but even then I doubt that would happen and I don’t want my way out by relying on a man. 1. Marrying a Muslim man is a no, unless they’re fine with me not being one, 2. A non religious one works out I guess, 3. Someone pretending to be a Muslim for the sake of my family is just unfair. Regardless of those three scenarios, I don’t think it’s right for me.

Things have been taking a toll on my mental health, weekends are pretty dreadful being around my family. I can’t find a job or anything to help myself even with basic necessities to even consider saving enough to move out of the country (while managing to figure out without him being notified or whatever).

What would you suggest?
I want to know if anyone has been in my position and managed to have freedom and leave?
ATP im just trying to live a bit longer.

Any good secular Kuwaiti therapists who don’t bring religion in their therapy sessions?

Reason I say Kuwaiti is that I need to talk to someone from a similar cultural background.

Thank you

What is your opinion on family?

I know we all live in a culture where we have to value, respect and love our family the most due to tradition, religion and how it’s the norm and it’s not just in kuwait but everywhere too like our neighbor countries next to us (Saudi Arabia, etc)

But let’s be for real, does anyone ever get tired of their family sometimes?? For me personally, I’m okay with my family but I get so so stressed and mad whenever they always find a way to fight and argue with you over the smallest things and if you try to talk to them with a calm and understanding attitude, they just have to spit insults or say the cruelest thing ever.

Or how they hit you and expect you to respect them without ever giving an apology.

Or how they abuse you.

Or how there’s no privacy even in your room or trying to avoid you from spending time with friends or anyone.

Or how they complain so loud, they won’t shut up unless you say something then they get mad if you say something and if you don’t, they also get mad

And so much more.

honestly I wish I could go on in this post but I think i just want to hear about y’all opinions on this, I can respect my family but I won’t support the things they are doing to me or my siblings (mostly arguing and hitting)

What started your atheism journey?

What was the reason you left religion? And how did it happen? For me I was never religious and my family are kinda open minded I never had to pray or wear hijab for example and my family only fast during Ramadan and that’s it :)
My relationship with god was always fear, I was always afraid of the concept of the afterlife and عذاب القبر
The reason I got into all of this is funny
Whenever I watch videos I like to read comments
So I saw a comment of a man under a woman’s post calling her
And it kinda started from there!
I started doing research and I was shocked!
But tbh just because a religion is misogynistic it’s still very hard to leave ONLY because of that at least that was the case for me because I was soo afraid of the concept of death and hell
So I did more research and found out a lot of scientific mistakes and that’s when I was sure it’s not from god because how the creator of the universe doesn’t know how he created it?
