Hi everyone,
My name is Yitbarek Zelalem Yitayehu, reaching out directly from Hawassa, Ethiopia. I am writing this post with a desperate hope to find my younger biological sister, Tarikua Zelalem Yitayehu, who was separated from our family through international adoption when we were children.
For years, my father (Zelalem Yitayehu) and I have been searching through local channels and registries in Ethiopia, but we have hit many dead ends. We have no idea which country she was adopted to or how to reach her today.
Details:
* Sister's Name: Tarikua Zelalem Yitayehu
* Father's Name: Zelalem Yitayehu
* Brother's Name: Yitbarek Zelalem Yitayehu
* Origin Location: Hawassa / Ethiopia
If you are an Ethiopian adoptee, adoptive parent, or someone with experience navigating international adoption searches, please help amplify this post or share any search registries/resources that could help us.
Even an "upvote" to make this visible to more people in the adoptee community would mean the world to our family.
Thank you so much for reading and for any support!

I’m excited to share a big milestone in my journey as a young founder from Ethiopia.
My startup, SchoolOS, has been shortlisted for the next phase of the Tech Hub Africa Startup Pitch Competition 2026!
SchoolOS is an EdTech platform I'm working on to help schools manage students, teachers, attendance, fees, academic information, and communication in one place.
As a 15-year-old Grade 10 student learning software development, this opportunity means a lot to me. I'm learning that building a startup is not just about writing code — it's also about understanding real problems and creating solutions that can make a difference.
We're still early in the journey, and there's a lot to learn and improve. I'm looking forward to the next phase and continuing to develop SchoolOS.
I'd love to connect with other founders, developers, and people working in EdTech.

One step at a time. Keep building! 🚀

Hey everyone -
I’m looking to expand my social circle and find out where the young (Ethiopian) professional (20s/early 30s) and grad student crowd actually hangs out in Minneapolis once the cold sets in.
Winter is coming, as they say in the Game of Thrones and honestly, the work-gym-home routine gets incredibly boring after a while.
I am not a club person, so I'm trying to find alternative, substance-over-hype spaces to meet people, try new things, and escape seasonal hibernation.
Let’s connect!

Hello!
I’ll be in Addis as a solo Western woman for a few days, and I was wondering how safe you think it’d be for me to walk around Bole, but also if I want to visit some museums or places closer to center, what way would you recommend to move around? Eg. If I want to go to a jazz bar at night, would it be ok for me to take a taxi alone late?
Also talking about jazz bars, I know African Jazz Village is kinda famous, but is it too touristy? Maybe are there any other recommendations you have?
Amesegeluuu 🙏

I’m currently trying to figure out which skill I should learn to improve myself this year and for a chance of getting better paying job. I’m looking for something that can be learned upto 6 months with consistent practice and that has real demand.

I’m not sure how accurate 23andMe is at the regional level, but my dad is fully Oromo, so I expected to see Oromo ancestry reflected in my results.
Have any fellow Ethiopians experienced something similar?
Also, my maternal haplogroup is M1a1.

For those using foreign currency accounts with Ethiopian banks and their virtual cards, how smooth is the experience? Also, which bank is better?

Here is a heatmap based on G25 genetic coordinates for Amahra people divided into hunter-gatherer, farmer, historical and modern ancestry. This is a similarity and proximity report, not indicative of direct descent. Any other ethnic group from Ethiopia that you would like this done for?

Has anyone living in the US renewed their passport recently? The Ethiopian embassy website says to use the app but after downloading the app it shows me an error message, when I try to launch it , saying “service unavailable”. I live in Oregon and really can’t fit time to travel to DC to do it in person? How is anyone renewing their passport right now?

Hey everyone,
I’m helping my family sell approximately 10,000 m² of development land in Jabana, Kigali.
The site has a government-approved subdivision into 24 plots, with internal roads included in the plan.
We’re asking 750M RWF for the entire property, negotiable. Individual plot titles are still pending.
I wanted to reach out in case anyone here invests across East Africa or knows developers active in Rwanda.
Happy to share the location and documents if there’s genuine interest.
Thanks!

Would you rather form a federation with Sudan or Arabia (which consists of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait). Also in both cases the federation includes Eritrea and Djibouti too.

Part 1 ( Personal Journey )
I'm 44 now. Last year, around this time when I was 43 ; my brain changed, and I didn't know who I was anymore. I'm writing this for my Ethiopian sisters in their 40s who feel it too and haven't said it out loud. Because in our circles, we don't talk about this. And we should.
How am I navigating this age? Primarily hormonal changes.
A while back, Dr. Aviva Romm, MD, said we need women at this wisdom age more than ever. I nodded when I heard it. I understand it now.
The best part of my life has been my 40s. I cracked most of my life's challenges on the eve of turning 40, and since then, I've been confident in my own skin.
And that confidence changed something else. Contrary to my younger self who had far more male friends and acquaintances; I now want to connect much more with women. Especially professional women in my age group. To share life events, experiences, and this strange transition we're all moving through, each in our own way.
Because this is the age where we need women who understand the hormonal talk. Who understand the relationship challenges ; dating, marriage, the whole terrain through the lens of being a woman. Not advice. Not fixing. Just recognition.
But research keeps finding what many of us discover the hard way: women are often late-diagnosed with AuDHD. I discovered my own mental health challenges & my ADHD brain through my inability to function in society as efficiently as I used to. The symptoms started showing up last year , when I was 43, around this time.
· Extreme exhaustion esp mental fatigue ( the kind of fatigue that rest was not solution )
· Sleep irregularities
· Small chores feeling like massive projects ; cleaning my room, going to the hair salon, putting things away
· Academic courses I bought became a battle to complete
· Books I bought became unthinkable to finish
· Mental Fog & Forgetfulness (I thought I had early dementia).
· Flat mood
· I stopped enjoying things I used to enjoy
· I lost my enthusiasm to be competitive, to read, to grow professionally
· I stopped caring about others.
Everything started making sense once I began reading research papers, filling out assessments, and consulting academic AI. My brain is transitioning into the perimenopausal stage and it's making my ADHD symptoms worse. All my coping mechanisms are falling apart.
In Ethiopia, I reached out to women around me in my age group. What I noticed: some are asymptomatic. Others have mild symptoms. Some are mild-to-medium. And others are suffering severely.
What makes the difference?
Lifestyle and other medical conditions like mine. ADHD brains need estrogen. Dopamine depends on it.
Actions I immediately employed:
· Quit my job ( full time job) —the one that was traumatizing me and stole my sleep
· Stopped working three places, six times a week. It wasn't worth the suffering.
· Work only a few days a week now ( flexible hrs) .
· Force myself to eat properly (with ADHD, eating is a chore)
· Exercise
· Rest—guilt-free
I'm still navigating what my brain needs with nutritional and diet therapy to get my old self back. I am considering getting a coach who understand ADHD brain. But I'm also acknowledging this is a transition ( hormonal ) , and I'm choosing to invest in it rather than withdraw and let the older version of me suffer more debt.
I'm better than I was this time last year.
What about you ?
Part 2 :- Hormonal change & Relationship esp marriage .

Modern individualism teaches boundaries, self-love, mental health, personal fulfillment, and financial self-preservation even in parenthood. Older generations understood parenthood more through duty, sacrifice, loyalty, and endurance. Individualism may be harmless in many parts of life, but when self-interest begins to outweigh responsibility toward your own child, it can become moral failure and, in cases of neglect, even a legal one.
That is why I often ask myself whether bringing a child into a culture that increasingly puts the self first is wise at all. If I cannot place my child above myself when it truly matters, then for me, the better choice is not to have one. Sadly, this is not just something I have read about; it is something I have personally observed in many people around me.
