Equipment & Tack Skijoring saddle recs?

Post image

Hi all, any recommendations for saddles to skijor with (towing a rider) that won’t make my wallet cry? And/or what kind of rigging is required?

(Pic because it’s ba, it is not me..yet!)

I use my dressage saddle with a breastplate and it works just fine.

That being said most people use any western saddle with a breastplate.

Breastplate being the important part! Don't want the saddle pulling back off the horse!

I'd guess a roping or versatility saddle

That was my thought too

A roper if you want that heavy duty Omph. A solid all rounder oughta do the trick though. No cheapy low end one though, get a better made one. Invest that money into a damn good pulling collar though, like the one pictured.

I will say those pulling collars get pricey. I see them used for 50-200$. But sometimes you can get lucky and get them in a tack lot.

A western saddle! For sure a breast plate and something with a solid tree. A good all around western saddle or a roping saddle will be your best bet!

Get a used roping saddle.

Skijoring is way less force on the horn than roping cattle. I wouldn't even buy a very expensive one. Get one with full quarter horse bars that is comfy for you.

I feel like I saw people using roping saddles for this?
