I just came from an author’s book talk in a community hall. The hall had several entrances, including at the front (where the presentation was), but it was completely available to enter unobtrusively. The book was meticulously researched non-fiction and the author an expert in the field. Let’s say it was about “agony” and “agonizing” (it wasn’t). Before the talk began, the moderator asked everyone to silence their phones and announced that there would be no questions during the talk, but rather a question and answer period after the talk. At the beginning of the talk, the author explained the meaning of “agonizing” and the slides often had at their title the name of an important historical agonizer, e.g. John Doe, agonizer.
A few stragglers came in late, kept to the side of the room directly after the door and unobtrusively found a seat. About 10 minutes into the talk a woman walked in, walked directly behind the speaker in front of the projected slides, and then to the other side of the room, making her way into the center of the second row (again, there were other seating options that would have been less disruptive). She then took out a notebook and a pen and raised her hand and asked what an agonizer was. To the speaker’s credit the answer she received was that the speaker would take questions at the end of the talk and had already explained what an agonizer was—but then very briefly and graciously defined it. The woman then took out her phone and started texting—in the middle of the second row in full view of the speaker. I just can't wrap my head around the way some people think.
