Lessons from History Can we talk about communism and freedom of movement?
If there's something that I feel that's not talked about ENOUGH about communism, is the freedom of movement issue. And the thing is, we all know that historically communist nations have always had strict policies about VISAs and even movement WITHIN the country, but a lot of people seem to brush all of this off as an issue that come from those leaderships in specific and their authoritarian bs, rather than recognizing it as an issue that INHERENTLY comes with communism.
Communism as a system will ALWAYS mean restricted movement for the citizens, always, this economic system is not doable without butchering your rights to freely move wherever you please. When you live under such a system, where the government owns everything, the government also needs to own YOU to survive, you are a walking investment and cog in the machine, the moment you want leave the system falls down.
Look at East Germany and their famous "brain drain crisis", between 1949 and 1961 more than 3 MILLION east germans fled to west germany, seeking better living conditions under their vastly more successful capitalist neighbor. These immigrants were disproportionately educated and young east germans, I'm talking doctors, engineers, teachers, educated professionals of all sorts... Over 50% were under 25. So what was happening? Well easy, the East German communist government fully subsidized education, university tuition and healhcare, they were creating an educated workforce for their country, but absolutely none of them wanted to stay. Why would they? Imagine studying so hard all your life only to get stuck with shitty wages and horrid living conditions, thats why most wanted to flee, or rather did flee, at least until 1961. In 1961 the famous berlin wall was erected, the East German government was collapsing demographically and economically so they genuinely had to put up a damn wall to keep people inside their collapsing country and murder anyone trying to leave, it sound like something out of a comedy movie, but sometimes real life does beats fiction.
This story is pretty much the same for all communist countries in history, the USSR, Cuba, Maoist PRC, Democratic Kampuchea... They all restricted or outright banned their citizens from leaving their country, in some of these cases you were banned from moving even WITHIN your own country. All because like I said, under communism you are the government's investment, you carry a number over your head of how much money the state has sinked on you, the moment you LEAVE the country that investment is burnt and other country benefits from it. Do you think North Korea would even **exist** today if they didn't shoot anyone that tried to leave? If North Koreans were free to move, all these educated north koreans would move to South Korea to work, North Korea would be left as an empty husk, a machine that produced brains for South Korea to take.
Truly, imagine a system SO BAD your only way to keep it alive is by killing anyone wanting to leave it. Successful educated people would never want to willingly stay under your shitty conditions, so your solution is to force them to?
One of the funniest cases of this and the one that proves what I'm saying the most is STILL ongoing. Not a history lesson like the USSR or East Germany, something you can look at right now. Its Cuba, in 2013 Cuba reformed their travel laws, eliminating the classic communist travel ban and need for a government permission to leave the country. Sounds nice right? This must mean freedom of movement for their citizenships after so many decades! Oh but there's a catch, they have this system of "regulados", a list of individuals that are restricted from traveling and benefiting from this "freedom of movement". Want to take a guess on who are these individuals who are banned from travel? Doctors, scientists, technical personal and anyone considered by the government to be a medical professional or a vital specialist. Essentially, if you are too smart you can't leave because that'd cause a "brain drain" like it happened in East Germany. Hilarious stuff, you can't make this shit up.
I really do think people need to bring this up A LOT more, because the mere idea of being restricted from traveling should make everyone's blood boil. Having a shitty system is one thing, not being allowed to even leave it is apocalyptic.
