Turbo clocking

Post image

This is actually a marine turbo, but I thought this would be a good place to ask. As you can see, there are some clocking issues. I've never worked on a turbo before. I think I can figure it out since there are only a handful of bolts, but can someone point me in the right direction on clocking the compressor housing and the cartridge? I assume that I've got to be very careful around the fan blades so I'm a bit reluctant to just go unbolting stuff.

This one is fairly simple. Loosen the bolts and turn the cartridge where you need it. Then loosen the v-band and clock the aluminum snail where you need it. Sometimes it’s a good idea to leave the cartridge a little loose until you tighten the hardline for your oil drain. The hard ones are the VGTs which this one isn’t.

Just following up to be clear. I'm removing the bolts into the turbine housing to rotate the cartridge, correct?

Done. Easy. Just wasn't sure going into it.

Not hard. Rotate the CHRA first, and the compressor housing last.

It looks like you'll rotate the CHRA 90º, then the compressor housing another 90º.

Looks like if you loosen the vband clamp, you can rotate the housing. Just be careful not to munch the blades when you rotate. I had to on my setup too, but slightly different turbo.

You don't just rotate the housing. The CHRA has to be clocked correctly for oiling purposes.

And as far as the cartridge, unbolt from the hot side, pull it out, and reclock the drains.

Just unbolt or loosen then rotate
