Rant 📢 Another reason to not tip, happening in Calgary, AB, Canada
This is from a FB post about a restaurant in Calgary. Canadians make min wage and in Alberta it’s $15/per hour.

Hi guys,
I'm looking at revamping our wiki and one of the things I thought might be of some use is to catalogue all the different "junk fees" we're starting to see, so people can be aware to look out for them.
Those who care to respond, please could you answer:
1] What was the fee entitled?
2] Where was it disclosed? (Just on the receipt? Small print at the bottom of the menu? Sign on the door? Website?)
3] Approximately when did you see this? (if you remember - it could be useful to chart the "rollout" of different things!)

List of full service sit down restaurants that include all gratuities and fees (except tax) in their menu price. This is a work in progress...
If you would like to add to the list, find errors, have more details to add, or have any questions please message the moderators. You can post any new places you find. Any place with an added fee, even if disclosed does not belong on this list. Fast food, counter service, and to go places do not belong on this list either.
Please include:
Name and Location of the restaurant.
Website
Description of the no-tip policy.
California, Massachusetts, New York, Texas, VA, Washington State, Wisconsin

Had a pleasant experience in Edinburg, Scotland this afternoon. Took a cab from the airport to the hotel. The driver entered the amount, pressed “no tip”, and held the device out for me to tap my credit card.

I recently returned to a local restaurant chain and noticed they had disabled the tip prompt from their POS system. It is a counter service restaurant, but on previous visits I was always prompted to leave a tip. On this latest visit I was simply asked to sign the screen and was handed the receipt. No “transaction fee” either! It was quite refreshing.
One small step in the right direction towards ending tipping!

Doesn’t even allow in and out.

A new tactic I've been encountering more often recently.,
Place an online order for carryout or Curbside.
And they've brought back the "sign the slip" tactic. This went away for a few years but has now made a comeback.
Have been asked to sign at Domino's for a prepaid order.
And curbside at Olive Garden they had little clipboards to get the signature and as an additional tipping opportunity as the question is already asked during the ordering process.

Tip culture and tip begging has gone too far.
The school one of my grandchildren attends is having a fundraiser to help the chorus. I like to support my grandchildren so I always make a small donation to their fundraisers.
I entered my donation amount and was immediately asked to tip the platform. Not the school, the platform itself. It automatically added a 20% tip.
If you clicked Other on the first beg screen you were asked to choose either $7, $5, $3, or Other.
Clicking that second Other option then took you to the screen where you could enter a specific dollar amount. Entering 0 brings up a nag prompt asking again for a tip and giving options of 15%, 10%, or 5%. If you enter any other amount besides 0 the nag prompt doesn't appear.
The you must scroll all the way to the bottom of the page where you're asked to enter the name of your employer so the platform can automatically send them a donation request (with the corresponding tip beg of course).
Right below that is the button to click to complete your donation.
I left the organization's name in the pics so others know what to watch out for.

I went to this wine bar for an event and saw this sign posted. This is the first and last time I go there. I paid with cars and it asked me if I wanted to leave a tío. I said nope and moved on. My cash is not good enough to pay the bill but is only good for tips.
What is an advantage of only accepting credit/debit cards?!

So I had a plumber come last week and do some work for me. At the end of the service he brought his iPad out with the total. I gave him my debit card to run and then he turned it around for me to tip him. I didn’t. I thought that was completely wrong. Am I right not to tip plumbing? Thanks for any input.

This place is in Sacramento, CA, Chinese restaurant called “Old Gui Lin” with lots of good noodle and rice bowls and other non traditional Cantonese restaurant dishes, quite good quick food and no service charge or tipping. Give it a try if you are in the area.

Convince me otherwise. You’ve got two tables at this place… table 1 orders the $640 Wagyu steak and a $1,000 bottle of wine. Server takes the order, brings the food and drinks, and delivers the check. Done.
Table 2 orders the $54 hanger steak and a diet coke… they ask for multiple refills, extra ketchup, extra napkins, they send the steak back twice, and generally run the server ragged.
Yet somehow, we’re expected to tip table 1’s server dramatically more? The server at table 1 didn’t work any harder. Neither did the chef or the other staff.
I think tipping should be based on the number of runs back to the kitchen, not on the price of the meal.

Well this was fun, took family out for a fundraiser at Chicken and Pickle. For those who don't know, you order at the counter, self serve drinks, pick food up at counter. Ordered the food, asked for drinks, then I hear the total. I instantly questioned it, running the numbers in my head I expected around $40 as I got the kids meal for myself because why not. She said well you got drinks, me "are they $7 ea?". She then proceeded to roll her eyes and said she'll print out the receipt when low and behold there's the 20% on there. Asked her what that was for and of course it's for the staff. I proceeded to point out the above self service practices. She then informed me "it's for the back of house staff that ring up and cook food, there's no way to take it off".
If my toddlers weren't already driving us crazy that day I would have pushed it more but caved instead. After eating, my wife goes to pick up the plates and I stopped her saying I tipped extra for them to clean the table.
We have been back since to play pickleball and started packing sandwiches for the kids and everyone brings a drink. I refuse to buy food here again.
Edit One comment pointed out the private event could have caused the tip. The fundraiser stated they get 50% of the proceeds if you use the code when ordering. I'm wondering now if the venue is charging 20% to offset the donation which is actually worse imo. Couldn't tell you if the tip is on there without the code, haven't ordered food since. Found this since posting and looking online "Please add per person in your party that will be ordering food. You are responsible for your group's bill. (Chicken N Pickle adds 20% gratuity automatically to each purchase) These tickets are limited per Chicken N Pickle"

Was shopping on Amazon and added an item to my cart and it came up with a tip option. This has gotten insanely out of hand if we’re being asked for tips on Amazon.

I definitely saw it. I don't know if he was even trying to be sneaky about it, or if he's just so used to people pissing money away on him that he doesn't think anything of it. But I was angry to see this. No pre-programmed setting or any other excuse. Just a leech trying to help himself to my money.
I hit zero.

Hi Reddit,
2 years ago, I made this post with the first draft of a petition against tipping culture in Canada. Admittedly, it was an idea more than a plan, and despite getting over 10,000 signatures, I never took further steps. (Life happened, we had a kid, my bad).
I've updated the petition to be a lot more verbose, because I felt that the original petition
The updated petition is here: https://www.change.org/p/end-tip-culture-in-canada-fair-wages-fair-practices
I welcome all feedback and am open to making changes; I'm hardly a writer, so please offer any ideas.
I'll be doing further research on which authorities this should target, as well as any information on precedented signature counts that lead to successful change.
Honestly, I don't have a lot of time to spare on this, so if anyone wants to collaborate beyond comments/suggestions, feel free to DM me.

It’s not ‘optional’ when it comes with the bill.

And while I appreciate good service I would hope they appreciated my patronage. Also, the 2% credit card usage fee pass through is one of the lower I've seen in my town.

Public name: Ramen Ishida Chelsea
Public address: 104 8th Ave, New York, NY 10011
Ramen Ishida Chelsea located at 104 8th Ave, New York, NY 10011 across from the Google Chelsea building illegally stole money from me. I paid my bill on the tablet with a tip. I asked for a receipt. I even pressed the print the receipt option. The waitress did not give it to me. During the whole meal, the different waitresses were rude. They came and poured water in the glass without asking or saying anything. Some of the water from the waitress spilled on the table. No one cleaned it up. They slammed the food down and left. I asked for the check and they just rudely threw the paper down and walked away. I was ready to pay, and the waitress snapped at us saying she was not ready with the tablet yet after the paper bill came.
After I paid the bill with a tip, I asked for a receipt. They refused to give it to me after I orally asked and pressed the "print" receipt option. Later I found that they overcharged me from the original tip amount. I went on Google Maps Reviews. Other people had similar experiences.

I didn’t see this sign until after I paid. I did notice the prices were higher and no tip prompt. Overall I support this approach.

Just tried to use a gift card I got from switching to a new carrier and it was declining. I was sure the card had money so I checked the transaction history and found out that my $23 purchase from the fro yo place was $27.60. Okay that’s weird, just bought fro yo from this place last week and I did notice my transactions increased from what it was but I just assumed tax/charges for using a card. But the $27.60 definitely couldn’t be tax plus I had came back in the store since I forgot my umbrella and was confused why the cashier looked concerned but I just chocked it up to her thinking I might add more yogurt. Nope, 23+20%=27.6 Lol. Don’t know if i should go back to the store or contact corporate or what. She never even gave me the option to tip but decided to just add one??

The place was clean and the coffee was great! The cat section was on the second floor with glass walls so the cats could see the people first. There are currently 15 cats available for adoption - Biscuits & Beans Cat Cafe (: This is the kind of business worth supporting.

I recently went to a new dental hygienist in Eastern Passage, NS. And when I went to pay (where they ask us not to use credit cards) they actually have a tip option when checking out. This is really getting absurd now. Mint Smile.

Ridiculous that the business posted this and should be happy people are spending money at their establishment. If you can’t pay your employees enough you should shut the doors!
Edit: After 6 hours they deleted it, must have started to see the negative reviews pile up.
