Hand Rubbyoo stole my design so I bought the kit and made it.

Rubbyoo steals photos from real designers, runs it through a generator, and sends you garbage that is impossible to recreate.

As someone who does this for a living, it's incredibly depressing that AI slop has infiltrated the craft market. I wanted to see what I was up against so I bought a kit out of morbid curiosity.

I can't begin to explain how awful the quality was. Cheap floss, flimsy hoop, stitches that don't make sense, zero instructions. I tried my best to make it look as good as possible, but I think the results speak for themselves! Please avoid this company at all costs.

Question Beginner Tips

I’m kind of new to embroidery, in the way where I don’t know true technique or proper materials, but I’ve done a few projects here and there.

I just got back into it again, and am working on this project. The back is a mess and I’m obviously using too much thread/not doing it “right”, but what I’m frustrated over is my needle gets caught and is really hard to push through sometimes. Like hurts my fingers, can’t push it through at all so I need to go to a new spot but the whole area I’m trying to get to is tough.

I know this is probably a really stupid question, but is that common, or is it the needle size/type? The fabric? Just way too much thread on the other side? I thought it was the latter but I’ve watched videos of people layering and using A LOT of thread, and their needle glides so easily… please advise.

Ps the needles and fabric I use are leftovers from parents/grandparents/thrift finds, so nothing was bought specifically for embroidery.

Thanks!

You can't tell, but the thread is silver. Metallic threads are a new beast, good lord.

It's super tiny, about 3x3! I've been doing a workplace training over zoom for a while, and it's been great for my embroidery productivity 😂

This is mostly a practice piece - I've been struggling with hoop tension (the fabric is slippery). Any advice for how to do a piece like this differently? What other stitch would work for fire? It seems like too much distance on a satin stitch causes problems.

Hand WIP- unhappy with the blending possibilities

Hello, I’m currently working on the ‘5 Stages of Decay’ by Drooling Moose Designs. I just can’t seem to get the different sections to blend properly. Either the areas are too small, or I’d have to work horizontally rather than vertically (as you can see very clearly with the index finger). But I don’t like that; I’d also rather not have to change the direction of my strokes midway through – I want it to look as ‘smooth’ as possible.

I’m sometimes too critical of my own work and I’m not sure whether my vision of perfect colour transitions is even achievable. 😢

Hand Neon tetra magnet

One of a handful of neon tetras I’ve been doing lately. I’m working on building up a whole school of them, amongst other fish as well. I just recently finished miniaturizing my salmon design and am actively getting them punched out

After that, it sounds like I’ll be doing a fun series of puffer fish in different frames that come together to show an animation of it puffing up

Made with punch needle embroidery, mostly made up of yarn

Hand First really large-scale piece completed over the summer!

Made this as a baby gift for my best friends’ firstborn! Photos are from when it was still slightly a WIP; after kiddo was born, I added his name and birthday over the mountains/sky, but I’m not sharing a final pic just to respect his privacy in that regard.

This took me about three months; it was a t-shirt design I found that suited the cute-cryptid theme of his nursery, and I just stitched directly over it! I left the mountains and sky unstitched, to lend greater depth of field, and did most everything else with short/long stitch, some stem stitch, and a bunch of French knots for the blue flowers.

Just about gave myself tennis elbow with this one, but I couldn’t be more pleased!

Edit: You’re all so outlandishly kind! I’m coming up on just about a year since I started embroidering (although I’ve cross-stitched most of my life), and honestly if you’d told me a year ago I’d be capable of this, I’m not sure I’d have believed it. Always be stitching, and always be finding designs and ideas that push you to expand beyond your comfort zone!

Hand FINISHED finally

Post image

I had asked for advice for this hat months ago. Now it's finally finished. Hooray. Much blood went into the making of this. Also lots of love and the occasional gift. It's for a friend with emblem of their trade and some queer flower language :)

I had asked about how to fill the umbrella. I tried a few things, in the end i went with satin and back stitch over the satin to secure it,

Question Making Patches?

I'm a hand embroider and I am broke.... so with christmas coming up I thought I'd make people either framed pieces or patches since a lot of people I know have battle jackets as such I was wondering does anyone know how to make patches or have experience with them

Made this for a friend and it is my first piece made intentionally for another person. Pretty proud of it.

I self drafted the parttern mostly by tracing the original sprite art. And added the hat which was inspired by a fan art that I can't find the source of anymore. :(

Hand 5 Month Difference

Such a massive improvement, in my opinion!

The first piece was a Mother’s Day gift for my sister and took about 10 hours to complete. The second is a wedding gift for a close friend getting married this weekend, and it took somewhere between 15 and 20 hours!

I definitely rushed through the Mother’s Day piece a bit, but with this one, I really made an effort to slow down, be more intentional, and pay attention to the little details. Even though I finished the wedding gift relatively quickly (with some very long stitching sessions), I’m proud of how much more time and care I put into it. It’s so rewarding to see the improvement in my work, especially knowing how much I’ve learned between these two projects!

I’m really happy with how far I’ve come already, and I’m excited to keep learning, improving, and challenging myself with each new piece. Next up is a Christmas present for my boyfriend!

Question Thread

How do you know how many strands of thread to use when embroidering? Until following this subreddit, I honestly never knew or realized that you’re usually not supposed to use all six strands of thread. But how do you decide or know how many to use?

Hand Custom phone cover embroidery gift for a friend

She had her husband's baby picture on the back of her iphone with a clear case. She asked if I can create a cover where she can place her husband's picture. She's such a sweet girl that she said anything minimal that you can make, I don't wanna be teouble. So I put some thought and this is what I came up with. Used felt paper and single strand threads. I'm such a lazy bastard so it took me a lot of time to finish this. I need to be lot more proactive lol.
