Leviton “EV rated” 1450R failures
I’d seen reports of the threads in the new Leviton EV-specific 14-50R stripping out before reaching the 75 in-lb rated torque and I wanted to verify whether that was a real problem and see why, so I bought one, and also bought a Bryant 9450FR.
Yes, it’s a problem. The first one I tried started to feel like it was yielding at about 50 in-lbs and the torque peaked at 55 before dropping. The next one started to yield around 60 in-lbs and peaked about 65 in-lbs.
I also went through Amazon and Home-Depot reviews and found all of the reviews that mention torque—which I assume is most of the reviewers who actually used a torque tool and counted how many reported failures. 80%, or 39 of the 49 reported receptacles, were failures. Among the 10 successes were four people who reported torquing to spec with no problem and 6 people who kept returning them until they got one that worked, often on the third or fourth try.
Of course the Bryant had no problem with full rated torque. I might try pushing it to failure for the sake of science, but I’ll keep it in working order for now. But taking it apart to compare, the terminals are in fact a bigger thread (3/8” ≈ 9.5 mm vs. 8 mm nominal), and the metal it threads into is twice as thick. I’ll put a more detailed comparison in the comments.
My conclusion is the new EV-specific Levitons are not reliable and should not be used. Even if you get one that, by luck, doesn’t strip, it will be at the threshold of yielding and might fail after some thermal cycles.

Getting started with home charging
We have a new wiki page with an introduction to home charging.
It includes sections on:
Level 2 charging rates/currents
Choosing an EVSE
Plug-in or hardwired
There's also a second page with detailed information on service capacity and load management: how to assess how much room you have for additional loads with in the capacity of your electric service, and ways to accommodate high-rate charging with limited capacity.
Finally, there's a page on recommended chargers.
Use the comments section to recommend improvements to the wiki; for question about your situation, make a new post.

Can a 100A Panel Handle a Level 2 EV Charger Without an Upgrade?
One question that comes up when planning home EV charging is whether a 100A electrical service is enough, or if upgrading to 200A is always necessary.
The answer is: not necessarily.
A few things can make a big difference:
- Your existing electrical loads. Central AC, electric water heaters, ovens, dryers, and other large loads all matter.
- The charger's actual charging rate. You may not need a 48A charger if a lower charging rate already covers your daily driving.
- Load management. Some systems can automatically adjust or limit charging based on the home's available electrical capacity.
- Future plans. If you're also considering a home battery, heat pump, or other major electrical loads, it's worth looking at the whole setup rather than just the charger.
A 100A service doesn't automatically mean you need a panel upgrade. But it doesn't automatically mean you have enough capacity, either. The answer depends on the home's calculated load and the applicable electrical requirements.
I'd be interested to hear from people who have a Level 2 charger on a 100A service:
Did you install a lower-powered charger, use dynamic load management, or end up upgrading your service? How has it worked out in practice?

Australia Connecting FoxESS EV Type A Charger to FoxESS H3-15.0 Inverter
Hi All.
Recently added some CQ7 batteries to my Solar Setup at home, and now looking at adding a FoxESS Type A charger as well.
With my Current Setup, My main Switchboard, Inverter and Batteries are all mounted outside on the Northern wall, and inside the Garage on the Southern part of the house, I have a Sub Board where all my House Circuits go to, and which is where I would like to mount an EV Charger.
To get full advantage of the Charger, do I also need to run a Twisted Shielded pair from the Charger to the Inverter, and/or Main Switchboard, (Smart meter is inside Main Switchboard)?
The Main Power Connections to the EV Charger should be fine as it's literally less than a meter apart, however if I do need to run a twisted pair back to the switchboard, well thats much further away.
Cheers all

Melted 14-50
Decided to die today. It was installed by an electrician my company hired. Been working for 2+ years now but today it decided to melt. I think its always overheated but for some reason on this cool day (60F) it failed instead of the 104F days we've had this summer.
Can someone identify this as a cheap ass Leviton from just seeing the front like this (it is a leviton)? I have no idea why the prongs inside the phase plugs are so strange looking either, why do they look like they're only half of the actual length?
Blew our breaker and we'll have to replace both the EV charger plug and this socket. Gonna strongly recommend the $50 EV rated ones from Home Depot.

North America Install costs these days
So recently purchased ionic 9 and haven’t been able to keep up with my milage on lvl 1 charging overnight on portable charger.
Looking to go the hardwired lvl 2 route preferably emporia pro, if it ever comes back in stock.
Getting quotes from electricians now. Where i live in the northeast there are no install rebates but im wondering what a reasonable quote should be.
1) have 200 amp service with room
2) panel is already in the garage a mere few feet from where the charger would go.
I have one quote for $1000 which was more than i was expecting for a simple install.

Do advertising screens on EV chargers add useful value at retail sites?
I've been looking at a charger design with a 32-inch advertising screen, and I'm curious how useful this would be in day-to-day operation.
At a shopping centre or café car park, the screen could show nearby business offers, charging promotions or paid local ads. It could also make the charging area easier to notice.
But the business case seems to depend on more than the display itself:
- Can drivers or pedestrians actually see it?
- Is there enough advertiser demand to justify the extra cost?
- Who keeps the content updated?
- How much do screen maintenance and electricity add to operating costs?
My starting point would be to evaluate it as a way to promote the businesses already on-site, then assess whether paid advertising makes sense.
For anyone who operates a charging site—or regularly uses chargers with advertising screens—have you seen these displays provide useful information or measurable business value?
What makes them useful, and what makes them distracting?

Question - interrupted, hot L2 charger
So I've had my Autel level 2 charger for about 2 years. We've owned, in that time, a Kona EV, an Ioniq 5, and now own 2 Niro EVs. So I'm not new to this.
But last night I was charging my (2023 Wind) Niro, and my kid was taking the garbage can down at night and tripped on the cable. about 30 minutes later I saw a notification (i'd missed it earlier) that the charge was interrupted. I asked the kid, they admitted they tripped on it. I assumed it'd been pulled loose and went out to put it back in. But the handle was HOT. A little uncomfortable to hold even. I laid it over the charger and came back 30 minutes later. The front of the connector was no longer hot but the back of it was still warm. Still, i plugged it in and the car charged the rest of the way, no problem - tho my husband did unplug it when it was done, just to be safe.
So - does anyone know what happened? Is it possible the connection was loosened and maybe arcing or something? how could it be that hot if it had stopped the charge? any way to figure it out?

Any benefit to buying this wire for EV charging?
Doesn’t appear to be able to be used as permanent wiring. Is this worth purchasing? it’s about 22 feet long. Any use cases that would warrant buying it?

India Main MCB fire damaged my EV charger setup —Filing an insurance claim (Zuno), looking for advice
Hi everyone,
Recently had an incident at home where the main MCB caught fire. The fire spread to my EV charger's wall mount and the charger itself. Right now, the wall mount is half-burnt and unusable, and the charger cable has melted in a few places.
The car and the damaged components are currently at the workshop, and I am at the stage where Zuno Insurance has appointed a surveyor to inspect the claim.
This is my first time experiencing an accident like this and going through an insurance claim process. Just looking for your overall opinions and advice:
* What should I expect or keep in mind during the surveyor stage?
* Has anyone dealt with Zuno Insurance or a similar charger claim before, and how did the process go for you?
Appreciate any straightforward tips on how to navigate this from here.

Why are DCFCs so unreliable
So often I pull up to a charging station and there's some sort of problem with at least one of the plugs. Today pull up to an 8 plug station (4 CCS, 4 NACS), and it took me three tries to get a charge. One the payment was broken, one the charger wouldn't initialize.
It's rare that I pull up to a station where something isn't broken somewhere. Could you imagine if gas pumps were this unreliable?
What about these make them so unreliable. Even payment systems, which isn't new technology, seem to fail on them.

North America Resort in Reno ripped out all except Tesla chargers
One of the huge Casino Resorts in Reno ripped out all the Non-Tesla charging stations, leaving only Tesla. They had others but now they are gone.
Hotels.com advertises EV Charging which is why I stayed there.
Can anyone imagine why they would do such a thing?

DIY question
You all were so helpful with my last question. We need to install a 240V NEMA 6-20 plug for a level 1&2 charger which requires a 20a double pole breaker. Is there room in my little baby sub panel to accommodate this? It's in a pretty remote area and I'd prefer to do it myself if possible and safe to do so. Any advice appreciated.
