Can someone explain why the green options are the correct answers here? 🫠

The other options are what I would naturally use in a conversation, is this just a case where both options can be correct?

Out of the blue...

I'm always surprised that I can go my whole life without hearing a particular word, then after hearing it once it seems to be everywhere. Beclowned. I like it but it seems to have gained quite a bit of traction in a pretty short time.

Native ears needed — what's the host saying after "take those home"? (ASR keeps failing)

I can clearly hear:
"That'll be 1,000 points for Margie. Good for you, Margie. Take those home, ______."

I just can't make out those two words no matter how many times I listen. Thanks for the help!

ā€œover thousands ofā€ is crazy, right?

There’s a podcast ad I hear a lot for some business-to-business product that says, ā€œThis is why over thousands of businesses have made the switch.ā€ And every time it grates on my ears.

Two thousand is ā€œthousandsā€, and so is ten thousand, or ten million—it’s ten-thousand thousands, but it’s still ā€œthousandsā€. And so is ten-million-and-five. There’s no quantity that is ā€œover thousandsā€.

And yeah, it would be weird to say ā€œthousandsā€ if you mean ten million—because you could say ā€œmillionsā€, and if you’re trying to emphasize quantity that’s obviously better.

That’s why the ad hits my ears as not just awkward but almost dishonest. If you can’t honestly say ā€œtens of thousandsā€ just say ā€œthousandsā€. What the heck is ā€œover thousandsā€?
