Community Notice: Durham is for Durham

This subreddit exists for Durham and the people who live, study, work and spend time here.

Recently, we've seen increased political activity from accounts arriving from other communities, including both left-wing and right-wing political communities. Some have little or no previous involvement in r/DurhamUK and appear primarily when a political post gains attention.

To be clear: this is not a ban on politics, and the moderation team is not going to impose a political position on the subreddit.

Durham has a long and proud political history. Our mining communities, trade-union traditions, universities, changing population and generations of families who have lived here mean that people here inevitably disagree about politics. That's fine. Strong opinions are fine too.

What we don't want is r/DurhamUK becoming another front in the endless political warfare that dominates much of the internet.

If you're a lifelong Durham resident, an international student who arrived last month, someone here for a couple of years, or anything in between, you're welcome to participate.

Talk about the council. Talk about immigration. Talk about housing. Talk about Reform, Labour, the Conservatives, the Greens or whoever else. Complain about the buses. Complain about a roundabout. Disagree strongly with each other.

But talk to each other like human beings.

Brigading, threats of violence, encouraging harm against political opponents or groups of people, and sustained abuse of other users will be removed and may result in bans. The same standard applies regardless of which political direction it comes from.

Upvotes and downvotes should reflect the people actually participating in this community, not whichever outside political community happens to discover a thread.

We've tried to moderate this subreddit with a fairly light touch, and we'd like to keep doing that. That only works if people are capable of disagreeing without treating their neighbours as enemies.

Durham is a special place. This subreddit should feel like Durham — not like the rest of the internet fighting through it.

Talk. Disagree. Debate.

Just don't turn it into a war.

What nicknames have you heard for places in and around Durham and the university?

I ask as part of a linguistic study on this topic!
Examples could include those much loved (/s) ones like Billy B/Obby H/Gilly G or just stuff like St Cuth's...

Injured rabbit on Brockton road roundabout

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hi all,

First time posting on here but I figured someone might know something about this issue. I was walking home and I saw a rabbit on the side of the road on the Brockton road roundabout. It looked like it was in shock or something, with matted fur and I suspect it had been bitten by a dog or been hit by a car. I headed back home to grab a towel and take it someone more appropriate than on the side of the roundabout but by the time I got back it had gone. I looked around for a while to no avail, I can only hope someone scooped it up and put it somewhere safe. Either way I would appreciate any info on whether it was taken care of.

Attached is a photo of the rabbit.

What’s it called?

So I had my 83 year old MiL listening to a YT video about North East words. She knew most of them, but some were more Newcastle than Durham. When it got to Gansey she said that’s not the word she knew, but her memory is failing so she couldn’t remember what she knew it as as a child. She thinks it was similar, but not quite.

Side note, is it a neb or a snek? Seems like neb is the Newcastle version, but is snek very geographically specific?

We’ve had another one mentioned outside Reddit. Is anyone familiar with “I wouldn’t give cat haws for that”? Proposer says it was normal in Ushaw Moor in the 40s-60s but hasn’t heard it for a long time

Violin teacher recommendations please

I’m an adult wanting to get back into playing the violin (last played 7 years ago working towards ABRSM grade 5, but think I’m back to beginner level) and am based in Durham city. Has anyone got recommendations for specific teachers to contact or websites to look on please?

If your wondering what the traffic is in durham...

HEADS UP!! Just taken us over an hour to do a 20min drive. Hope everyone's safe and well, first responders too because it looked nasty. But i've never seen so many incompetent police. Blocking the wrong lane and road. Stopping ambulances, fire brigade and other police from getting down to the crash and also stopping any traffic from safely/slowly moving out of the area to free up said road for first responders. Honestly I'm shocked at how it was dealt with. I was 1 car behind the police officer and she had no idea what she was doing and stopped all traffic, including blocking an ambulance before she was shouted at and told to go block another lane. I'm guessing the one she was told to do first but couldn't figure it out, bless her. High stress and all that.

Church st... couldn't tell you. We sat on there for 20mins as well before i turned round and drove this way home. The roads and drivers up here... i have no words. This crap's constant up here atm. Anyone remember the crash on the bridge over the A1 in dragonville, couple of weeks ago? Peak time again, its nuts!

Anyways hope everyone gets home in one piece tonight and is okay after all the traffic. Should imagine the A181 is backed up, possibly A688, coming into Durham. Shincliffe Lane and the A177, leaving Durham, i wouldn't even bother if you can help it! Its possibly backing up into the city by now. Stay safe everyone, healing vibes to anyone involved in the crash! 🤍

County Durham to get second Young Futures Hub after success

County Durham will get a second Young Futures Hub after securing more government funding following the success of its pilot scheme.

Durham County Council will develop the new hub after its Newton Aycliffe pilot succeeded.

The hubs will offer youth activities, wellbeing support, skills training, jobs and wider services while helping steer young people away from crime.

Councillor Cathy Hunt, cabinet member for children and young people’s services at Durham County Council, said: "This is fantastic news for the county’s young people.

"Young Futures Hubs are about creating positive opportunities and making it easier for young people to access the support they need, when they need it.

"It’s a project that aligns closely with our wider ambitions through Durham Cares and Families First to provide the right help, at the right time, in the right place.

Being selected for a second hub is a strong endorsement of the partnership work already taking place and our shared commitment to helping children and young people thrive.

We look forward to working alongside young people, families and partners over the coming months to shape a second hub that reflects local needs and builds on the strengths already present within our communities."

The council will work with young people and partner organisations to choose the most effective location for the new hub.

The hub will support the council’s aim to give young people “somewhere to go, something to do, and someone who cares.”

Services will include youth activities, wellbeing support, skills training, jobs and access to wider services.

Safety on trains from London/Reading

Does anyone know what it’s like/how safe it is on the trains from London/Reading up to Durham?

Ive just moved to the uk for uni and don’t have trains where I’m from so I’m a bit anxious about taking them alone. My boyfriend is going to Durham uni so have booked to go visit him on an early evening train but I’m not sure if it would be better to get a daytime one.

Female perspectives would be appreciated but if anyone has insight that would be great, thanks!

I’ve recently moved to the area and want to know if there’s any clubs or meetings to meet new people.

I’m 28F. Into gaming, movies, reading, astrology.

I don’t want to start to feel lonely but would love if there were any groups or hangouts I could join.

Thanks

Lost Prayer Rope

Hello, I lost a black prayer rope on Thursday, Sept 17th in Durham. It has knots along the cord and a thin tassel. I mainly walked in the center of town and near the Methodist Church on Elvet. I know this is a super long shot, but just in case anyone found it, I’d arrange to have it returned. Thank you!

Parking

Afternoon ,

Just asking a question regarding parking- I’m starting as a PO in Durham next month. where’s best to park near Durham prison? Staff car park looks carnage whenever I’ve drove past, is there anyone who works at HMP Durham and can advise if it’s always like this and if so what’s the best alternative?

Thanks in advance for any responses

County Durham’s Sewerage spill data. Here’s what the raw numbers look like for the last 4 weeks.

I’m a 17-year-old and I’ve been working on WaterWatch—a free, independent site that aggregates raw Event Duration Monitor (EDM) data into clean weekly digests. It's been a massive talking point this week so I wanted so share some figures from the digest service I run for free.

  • 956.5 total spill hours across 551 monitored sites (39.9 cumulative days of continuous flow).
  • 1,600 individual spill events recorded across the county in four weeks.
  • #3 peak position in England for overall spill duration in one week

We create these digest reports every week and email them out which can be subscribed at the council level, water company or even national at water-watch.co.uk/digest There's a lot more through live maps, dashboards, postcode checkers, river analytics ect.

If you know anyone who would find this useful (like a councillor), please send it their way!
