Discussion Doom 3 is my favorite Doom
I love classic Doom and modern Doom games. But I think Doom 3 is amazing and the best one to me. I loved the horror atmosphere of it.
It had the right amount of horror and fire fights. That made me tense the whole damn game. Whenever the horror was getting repetitive they'd throw in a firefight and introduce new enemies that made it scarier. And less repetitive. Doom 3 also kept walking into almost unsurvivable traps that modern Doom forgot.
I really do feel the horror atmosphere of modern Doom is almost completly gone at this point, it's almost a dark fantasy game at this point, hell dosnt feel scary at all and it's kind of a violence loop throughout the campaign without many curve balls. The classic Doom games were shoot em up games at heart. But they had this feeling of uncertainty, gloom and scary atmosphere that creeped me out if I played them too long. And there was so many times in the classic Dooms where you'd get trapped and die horrifically.
I really wish they'd let you play as a regular marine just trying to survive hell again.
Classic Doom is Doom 64 and before. Modern doom is post Doom 3 to me

To each their own but IMHO nothing gets even close to Doom (2016). This game is close to perfect in so many many ways and will remain my absolute fav.
I'm currently going through Dark Ages and it's fun but would rather play 2016 for pure shooter experience
•
u/purple_pounder 9h ago
Oh I love Doom 2016 also. The only Doom game I don't like is Doom eternal. But one criticisim I have of Doom 2016 is it paved the way for the demons and hell to not really be taken seriously or as a threat in my opinion. And no real curve balls like classic Doom had. Other than that. It's great.
•
u/czrny1 8h ago
Yeah, 2016 had a perfect blend of sci-fi and fantasy elements to it's story - by that I mean mostly future tech with hell portal story as a way to get stuff on the screen to shoot at.
I guess DOOM3 is similar in this.
They went absolutely bonkers with fantasy in Eternal and from what I see Dark Ages is similar.•
u/purple_pounder 8h ago
Dark ages is just fun to play. But it's fantasy as shit. It feels like a dungeon and dragons version of doom.
•
u/Individual_Piece8146 8h ago
It's the best. Inspired by the 2-D version, which was pretty cool for 1993, the 2004 version updated the story to include teleportation, an ancient civilization and a lethal anti-demon weapon (not the BFG) that scared Hell itself.
•
u/Master_Draft_2888 6h ago
I agree but there was teleportation in the classic games too
•
u/Individual_Piece8146 5h ago
I forgot!
The other new thing is the dynamic between the Marine and Sarge.
•
•
u/Internal_Cesspool 8h ago
It’s a fine game! One of my top favorites as well! As a massive Doom fan I say it’s a great Doom game!
•
•
u/GuiltyAdvantage5877 9h ago
All dooms are good dooms in my opinion.
•
u/purple_pounder 9h ago
Honestly Doom eternal isn't fun to play in my opinion. Felt like a combat loop too much. Shoot enemies while switching weapons out and farm ammo. No real curve balls or challenges. And unlike the other Dooms you could only really play it one way.
•
•
u/Texy 9h ago
DOOM II is my favorite DOOM
•
u/purple_pounder 9h ago
That is understandable as shit. Doom 2 is so much fun. My list in order is Doom 3. DOOM1, DOOM 2, Doom 64, Doom 2016, Doom TDA and finally doom eternal. The only one I don't like is Doom eternal.
•
u/Texy 9h ago
I'm with you on Eternal. Let's get downvoted together on that one
•
u/purple_pounder 9h ago
Fuck yea. The Doom series has always let you play it either skillfully or carefully. DOOM Eternal only let you play it one way and it's repetitively.
•
u/lightr3nd 5h ago
That's really only true for the first three levels of your first run. After that you can just cheese the replay function at whatever difficulty and play style you please.
Anyway, everyone is wrong except me;
- Doom 2
- Eternal
- Doom 3
- 2016
- Doom I
- TDA
If eternal had 2016 artstyle and like... 6 more multiplayer modes, it would be the goat.
•
u/-_Moondance_- 10h ago
i only played it once, i loved the vibes and had fun overall but man did navigating that factory make me wanna scream and cry
•
u/purple_pounder 10h ago
My tip is barrel stuff that shotgun into imps to save ammo if you ever replay it. It takes like 2 or 3 slow shotgun blast to down most enemies in that game. But barrel stuffing gets it done in 1 or 2 shots.
•
u/Twisted_AZAZEL 10h ago
I've grown to appreciate Doom 3, not my favorite to be fair, but you know it grew on me with time
•
u/purple_pounder 10h ago
I think it did what it was trying to do. Be a scary game. It accomplished that. They should have treated it as a spin off instead of a sequel and I think more people would of liked it.
•
u/BananaFriendOrFoe 10h ago
I love it. Playing it as an adult is not so much fun tho. Its a very easy game to get lost (if you play once every 2 weeks), I think there is no map? and a lot of mails to read and hear, but still this game has a special place in my teen heart, I love it.
•
u/purple_pounder 10h ago
I think a remake of Doom 3 would do wonders tbh. I'd change it to where it's dark but not as dark as the orignal so you can find things without a flashlight. But still dark enough enemies can sneak up on you.
•
u/PitifulPassage851 10h ago
Ok I’ll buy it
•
u/purple_pounder 10h ago
Get the BFG edition. Trust me, it makes it much better than the orignal version of doom 3
•
u/chiefindenver 9h ago
I absolutely adore doom 3. I just beat it again a couple weeks ago. It always holds a special place in my heart
•
u/Little-Foundation-70 9h ago
This Before EA's Sci-fi Space Survival Horror Game
•
u/purple_pounder 9h ago
Lol Deadspace. I felt I was the only person who didn't like the remake. Everyone said it was amazing. But when I played it. It was so much easier than the orignal game was that it wasn't very fun to me.
•

•
u/Zailema0s 10h ago
Doom 3 is a “where the fuck do I go game” 😂
•
•
u/purple_pounder 10h ago
Lol BFG edition is the best way to play it.
•
u/Zailema0s 9h ago
Why?
•
u/purple_pounder 9h ago
The regular version makes you choose between holding a flashlight and holding your gun. The BFG edition let's you hold both at the same time. Trust me your gonna need that flashlight in Doom 3.

•
u/quetalweyyy 9h ago
I love the part where you look in the mirror. Also, I think this game was genuinely fucking terrifying and thats why people hate it. It wasn't just stupid jumpscare horror. It had suspense and buildup, and the story made sense. I remember being 10 years old booting this game up and not even being able to go do down the stairs at the start of the game. I was literally shaking. Lol. Great game honestly.

u/KenMcKenzie98 8h ago
So far my favorites in ones in order are Doom II, Doom 2016, Doom, and Doom: Eternal. I’m finishing all the expansions for Doom + Doom II currently then I plan to move on to Doom 3 and see if I agree with you!
•
u/purple_pounder 8h ago
Most Doom games are so much better than doom eternal in my opinion. Don't forget Doom 64 either. It's many peoples favorite doom. It probably does the best job of mixing shoot em up and horror of any Doom game.
•
u/purple_pounder 8h ago
Get the BFG edition of doom 3. The regular version makes you choose between holding your flashlight and holding a weapon. The BFG edition let's you use your flashlight and gun at the same time.
•
u/KenMcKenzie98 8h ago
I’ll have to check what version I have on my Xbox. I got it a while ago but never started it
•
u/Jumphero888 7h ago
I just wish that Resurrection of Evil all got another version that way the flashlight is separated just like BFG Edition of Doom 3
•
u/Downtown-Comment2508 1h ago
I feel like that takes away from the tension from the game being able to har access to the light the whole time.
•
u/ErBoProxy 7h ago
Played it once on the original XBox, but really want to revisit it.
Aiming for the GOG version alongside the 20th Anniversary Redux mod - other recommendations otherwise?

u/VelktheLost 7h ago
I did enjoy what I did play of Doom 3, but I had to stop because I was hopelessly lost after a point.

DooM III has nothing to do with OG DooM, its only doom in its name, dont even get me started with that horrendous shotgun or the fact that 80% of this games fights are closet traps, it gets old really fast, and the fact your forced to unequip weapons to see because the UAC hasnt invented a flashlight mount.. WHILE YOUR SPACE.

Doom 3 was a first game on my first ever PC. I've played before in gaming clubs, ofc, but it was special moment when you're getting your own pc and play this masterpiece at home.
•
u/DeckOfGames 2h ago
Yeah, mine too. A great game. I'd like to see a continuation of D3, stylish, spiritual or even a direct one.
•
u/Downtown-Comment2508 1h ago
I do really enjoy this generation of Doom, they are fantastic games however it would be great if there was another game like Doom 3. It had such an incredible atmosphere which wouldn’t be seen again until Deadspace.
I was never a fan of the BFG edition though. I feel that it misses some of the tension of the original.
•
•
u/BreadAgreeable9632 18m ago
I enjoy it more as a sequel the the newer dooms. I preferred DOOM 1, 2, 64 as horror games rather than strafe shooters
•
u/win_awards 18m ago
My biggest criticism of Doom 3 is the monster closets and teleporting monsters in behind you got pretty tired.
•
u/D-Dude1405 0m ago
I love Doom 3. I was 11 when it came out and it scared the hell out of me. Playing it in VR brought back that fear, it's a lot of fun and worth trying if you're able to play it. OG Doom was the first game I ever played so that will always remain my favourite.
•
u/DreamOfKoholint 10h ago
Doom 3 is my least favorite Doom
•
u/purple_pounder 10h ago
Even below Doom eternal? That is the worst doom game in my opinion.
•
u/karzbobeans 9h ago
How many hours have you put into eternal? I have about 500 hours in it now but i hated it at first until i got used to the gameplay loop. Then it made sense and its my favorite one.
•
u/purple_pounder 9h ago
I played it for a couple days before putting it down. I did not like the game play loop at all for this one Tedious. You have to play it one way to progress.
•
u/_HeDoesntRow_ 1h ago
And the way to play it is highly diverse depending on the situation. Doom 3 is much more repetitive in that regard.
•
u/CultistofHera WELCOME TO THE MESS HALL!!! 3h ago
Doom 3 is waaaaay better than any game from the modern trilogy
•
u/NoBodybuilder9355 9h ago
I think Doom 3 is like Resident Evil 6, where they’re both great games, but just don’t fit the general theme of their respective franchises. A good game, just not a good “Doom” game.
•
u/purple_pounder 9h ago
I think Doom 3 is still a better doom game then resident evil6 was a good resident evil. Doom 3 with the BFG edition can be played a lot like the classic Dooms still. Classic Doom made you explore to find ammo and heath. People are kind of spoiled by modern Dooms giving you ammo and health when you kill demons.
•
u/DeckOfGames 2h ago
>not a good “Doom” game
No. D3 was an evolution of series to a new direction, so it actually was "Doom" in the 2000ies
•
u/HomestuckHoovy DOOM Slayer 6h ago
Resident Evil 6 is not a "great" game lmao it should be a crime to compare it to Doom 3
•
u/NoBodybuilder9355 5h ago
😂 perhaps i shouldve used “enjoyable” instead, I had a fun time with RE6. But yeah definitely fair to say it’s not “great”.
•
•
•
u/KashifXTREME 9h ago
It's a great game, but doesn't fit in as a Doom game
•
u/purple_pounder 9h ago
I think it should have been treated as a horror spin off and no one would have complained.
•
u/evilmannn 10h ago
I have about 370h in vanilla doom 3 and about 270h in BFG, I love this game and is my favorite DOOM game.
•
u/purple_pounder 10h ago
I really wish they'd release the digital BFG edition for PS5
•
u/evilmannn 10h ago
I thought you can play the ps4 version of BFG on PS5? Or I misunderstood you? I think it's even on PSplus too.
•
u/purple_pounder 10h ago
I didn't see it last time I checked. I'll look again now that you said that.
•
u/evilmannn 10h ago
Yeah just type DOOM 3 BFG in the PS store, you can def. play it on the PS5, I know I did before, I mainly play it on PC but I played it on PS5 I'm 100% sure. Actually here is the link too:

the Actual true Doom game, if you know doom history, then you know doom 3 is the closest to how it was originally concieved
P.S. i would disagree about BFG edition flashlight changes, i use it to bonk zombos to save ammo
•
u/acee714x 5h ago
Doom eternal is infinitely better than doom 3
I’d say it’s ancient gods 1/2>doom eternal>TDA>doom 2016>doom 3
•
u/RockwellB1 9h ago
Decent game. Not a DOOM game. Flashlight mod/BFG edition is for the weak.
•
u/HomestuckHoovy DOOM Slayer 6h ago
It's a Doom game.
•
u/RockwellB1 5h ago
Very compelling argument... /s
•
u/HomestuckHoovy DOOM Slayer 5h ago
It's an action/horror FPS (Doom and Doom 64 were meant to have elements of horror) set on Mars where you fight demons using a full arsenal of weapons. Doom 3's boots on the ground less-linear levels, focus on dodging, emphasis on conserving ammo rather than being able to replenish it whenever arguably puts it closer to classic doom than games like Doom Eternal are.
•
u/RockwellB1 5h ago
I hear this all the time... don't care one bit what the OG games were "meant to be". Those games don't exist. Going off what we got, 3 is nothing like the OGs because unless you are also afraid of goombas, there is no horror to the OGs. The OGs are fast paced with very few sections of downtime and you play as an OP beast of a man who can tear enemies apart with his fists.
You like the horror aspect, that's cool, but it puts 3 in a different genre from the OGs and the newer games. And 3 leaned into the horror much heavier before the BFG version made the duct tape mod official. It was also darker overall because the reworked lighting brightened things up. They should do a sequel, but not a main game. It's clear most people want to play as the Slayer in the main games. Let the Marine have his horror series of side games.
•
u/HomestuckHoovy DOOM Slayer 5h ago
"I hear this all the time... don't care one bit what the OG games were "meant to be" they have elements of horror in the final products. Monster closets, areas in complete darkness, the PSX rereleases giving them horror lighting and music, Doom 64...
"who can tear enemies apart with his fists." larp bro that only applies with the Beserk pack which is in Doom 3 too
"but it puts 3 in a different genre " not really, Doom 64 also has horror ambience, horror lighting and is action/horror.
"from the OGs and the newer games" the newer games are also incredibly different with a focus on verticality, resupply mechanics, pure action rather than moments of spookiness or ambience
•
u/_HeDoesntRow_ 1h ago
It’s a good game but not a good Doom game is the most tired argument of them all. Not original and it tries to play both sides.
•
u/purple_pounder 9h ago
I disagree on the BFG being for the weak. The flashlight mod let's you play it alot like a classic Doom game.
•
u/RockwellB1 9h ago
Except even with the flashlight it's nothing like a classic Doom game, it's a horror game. And the flashlight being active all the time detracts from the atmosphere. You have your choice, flashlight to see and possibly get jumped, or poor vision but you're ready to be jumped.
•
u/purple_pounder 9h ago
Hell nah I was playing aggressively as shit after beating it the first time. Barrel stuff and dodge.
•
u/RockwellB1 5h ago
So does the fact I now crack jokes while playing Silent Hill make it any less of a horror game?
Doom and Doom 2 were not horror games. No one I knew when they were released thought that. I would blast my way through Mars in the dark basement on DOS and have a good time. Played it at my cousin's on SNES and we had a jolly good time with fear nowhere to be found.
Not so when 3 released. 3 was hailed for it's graphics and slow-burn horror atmosphere. And people complained you couldn't have the flashlight out at the same time as your gun, totaling missing the point and causing much debate when the duct tape mod released. It's a good reimaging, and might be what they had in mind when creating the OG games, but they actually ended up with two different genres for the series when 3 came about.
2016 was a return to Classic and seems to be what people want from the series. It's how I prefer it, but I'd totally be down for more horror based games in the series so long as the main games stuck around too. I think the horror based ones could focus on the Doom Marine, just an average Joe doing his duty. The Hell destroying Slayer could stay in the main games.

I played the bfg edition on switch so I haven't had the "real" experience (have had it on steam since before I got it on switch, just never got around to it) and I think playing it in a traditional console way massively helps the experience
I really like it, definitely above doom 2 in my opinion
•
u/Razor_NfS 10h ago
Doom 3 was my introduction to the Doom-Universe. I was 11 when the OG Doom (1993) came out and playing Sega Mega Drive, SNES and Sega Mega CDII all day. A console kid. Doom 3 on the OG Xbox was my first Doom game. It was a really good port and I had much fun with it. Thats why Doom 3 also has a special place in my heart. I really like the darkness and the atmosphere in this game, even when its very repetitive. Later I also played Doom (2016) and Eternal and got the platinum trophy in both.
