Why isn’t collecting dolls viewed as an actual collection?
I’ve been thinking about this for a while. I collect Monster High dolls (along with other types). It makes me happy, I enjoy it, save up money for them, etc. Whenever I mention it to my father (for context, I’m a minor, which to me makes this crazier) he laughs and says “Dolls? That’s not collecting!“ Or something along those lines. He says because they have ‘no monetary value’ like pokemon cards, they’re not a collection. I‘ve tried to explain to him that collecting means having multiple of something that you enjoy, doesn’t mean it costs a lost, people collect feathers, rocks, etc. How come dolls aren’t a collection?
I feel like it’s deeply rooted in misogyny. If they were action figures, I’d probably have support from my dad (again, I’m a minor and apparently already too old to collect dolls- why is there an age to dolls?) and other people wouldn‘t stare at me strangely when I mentioned them. My female friends and mom, on the other hand, are glad that I collect them and actually view them as a collection. Is it too feminine for men (yes I know some men collect dolls too, that’s great!)? Why is it such a problem to call my collection of 15+ dolls an ACTUAL collection?
