Disgaea 5 Question about the Goldionn and Nether Research Squad (Disgaea 5)

Why can't I send Goldion out on a world research mission? And if I can't for some reason—which I don't know yet—what character do you recommend I use as the leader?

Note: I have all the DLCs, so don't hesitate to recommend a DLC character!

Two more questions: What are the advantages of the Research Squad? Does it make sense to assign only the leader? What is the benefit of filling up the Research Squad? And my final question is: Is it true that only the leader matters for expeditions? In theory, if Goldion were powerful enough, would sending just him be sufficient?

To answer what I can off the top of my head:

  • Story uniques can't be sent on research. Generic Overlords and DLC uniques should be fine.
  • The groups you send out do simulated fights with the first unit until they die, then the second until the second dies, etc. A strong first unit can carry the whole group or handle it solo, and it doesn't really matter who that first unit is if they're strong enough. Additional units who never see any simulated combat are just there to get passively raised.
  • As far as I'm aware the only advantage to having multiple members in the Research Support Unit is to be able to split its members between more ships to benefit from the level 5 squad effect of doubling research speed. As far as I'm aware this squad hasn't been looked into as heavily as some others though.
