Question How should I instrument a Discord preview → PATCH pipeline when full enrichment may finish first?

0 Upvotes

I'm developing a Python asyncio Discord notification bot that monitors blockchain transactions. It uses PostgreSQL for durable delivery state and has an optional Fast Alert pipeline.

The intended flow:

  1. Send an early preview containing only sufficiently verified evidence.
  2. Save the confirmed Discord message ID.
  3. Update the same message with the complete card using PATCH.
  4. Preserve recipient authorization, delivery ownership, revision checks, reorg handling, and duplicate protection.

What I've observed:

During one production session, we recorded 41 full-card Discord API ACKs:

  • Average source-to-full-ACK latency: 1.34 seconds
  • Median: 0.96 seconds
  • P95: 3.21 seconds
  • Under 1 second: 21/41 cards

However, there were no [FAST_PREVIEW] markers in the session logs.

This does not necessarily mean the feature is broken.

The feature defaults to disabled, and its effective runtime setting for that session has not been confirmed. Some events may lack the minimum verified evidence, and the implementation intentionally skips preview when full enrichment finishes first.

Simplified scheduling code:

This is a sanitized reduction of the preview scheduling logic, not verbatim production code.

minimum_future and full_task represent existing asyncio Tasks/Futures. The full task represents enrichment/routing readiness, not a Discord full-message ACK.

Recipient authorization, durable ownership, detailed error handling, revision checks, and POST/PATCH implementation are intentionally omitted.

import asyncio
import logging

logger = logging.getLogger(__name__)

async def maybe_publish_preview(
    *,
    enabled,
    minimum_future,
    full_task,
    is_eligible,
    publish_preview,
):
    # These early exits are currently silent.
    if not enabled or minimum_future is None:
        return

    await asyncio.wait(
        (minimum_future, full_task),
        return_when=asyncio.FIRST_COMPLETED,
    )

    # Prefer the full path if it is already ready.
    if (
        full_task.done()
        or not minimum_future.done()
        or minimum_future.cancelled()
    ):
        return

    minimum_evidence = minimum_future.result()

    # Includes evidence validity and recipient checks.
    if not is_eligible(minimum_evidence):
        return

    # Full readiness may have changed.
    if full_task.done():
        return

    # Abstracts transport and durable ownership.
    result = await publish_preview(minimum_evidence)

    # Logged only if the call returns.
    logger.info("preview_result=%s", result)

What concerns me:

Several execution paths return without explaining why no preview was sent.

Also, .done() is true when a task completes successfully, fails, or is cancelled. In this simplified flow, those outcomes are not distinguished.

Likewise, minimum_future.result() or publish_preview() may raise an exception before a preview-result log is recorded.

This makes it difficult to determine whether:

  • Fast Alert was disabled.
  • Minimum evidence was unavailable or insufficient.
  • The recipient was ineligible.
  • Full enrichment finished before preview.
  • Preview was attempted but failed or produced an uncertain outcome.
  • Preview was acknowledged and later updated successfully.

My questions:

  1. Instrumentation: Which counters, structured reason codes, or trace events would you add to distinguish these paths with minimal runtime overhead?
  2. Task lifecycle: How should successful completion, exceptions, and cancellation be distinguished when using asyncio.FIRST_COMPLETED?
  3. Delivery correctness: How would you correlate source-event identity, preview HTTP ACK, durable PostgreSQL ACK, message ID, PATCH revision, and final full-card completion?
  4. Latency measurement: How would you measure source-to-preview ACK and source-to-full ACK separately without double-counting events or treating preview as full completion?
  5. Testing: How would you validate concurrency, cancellation, reorg, ambiguous HTTP outcomes, and full-ready-first behavior without artificially delaying enrichment to force previews?

My goal:

I want to reduce the time until users receive their first useful Discord notification, ideally below one second when possible.

However, I don't want to weaken financial/security verification, send duplicate messages, update the wrong message, or incorrectly mark a preview as a completed full alert.

I'm looking for instrumentation and validation strategies before changing production behavior.

I can provide small sanitized code excerpts or synthetic traces if needed.

Question Built a bot that reminds people about @mentions they never answered. Looking for honest feedback

0 Upvotes

Disclosure up front: Mention Reminder is our own bot (we're a small web agency in Warsaw). It's free for up to five people and paid per person beyond that.

The problem we kept hitting: someone pings you, you read it on your phone between two things, mean to answer later, and it scrolls away. Once you've opened the channel the red badge is gone, even though you never actually answered.

How it works

  • Every @mention goes into a private thread only that person can see, with a jump link back to the original message.
  • At the hours they pick, it reminds them about whatever is still open: by DM, or in that private thread if their DMs are closed.
  • An item clears itself when they reply to the message, react to it, or press Done. A 🔔 on the original message shows it's still waiting on someone.
  • @everyone and @role pings are ignored by default. On the paid plan they can be switched on, and an AI check decides whether the message actually asks someone for a reply, so one announcement doesn't turn into fifty reminders.
  • Only a one-line excerpt is stored, anything that looks like a password or token is stripped first, and deleting the original message deletes its reminders.

I'd love your feedback on

  1. How do you keep track of pings you meant to answer today? Mentions tab, "mark unread", a pinned note, or nothing at all?
  2. Is there a bot you already use for this that I should look at?
  3. Anything that would stop you from adding it. Brutal honesty welcome.

You can try it for free: Mention Reminder on the Discord App Directory

Thanks, I'll answer everything in the comments.

Question Privileged intents removed after missing the 10k-user review deadline by one day: how long did your review take?

0 Upvotes

Looking for advice from anyone who has been through the new Privileged Intent review (the 10,000-user threshold introduced in June).

Our bot got the notification and the deadline was Oct 9. We submitted the review on Oct 10, one day late, and in the meantime Discord removed all three privileged intents (Server Members, Presence, Message Content). We got an automatic confirmation that the request was received, but nothing since.

We also opened a Developer Compliance ticket asking if access could be temporarily restored during the review. We confirmed it was a compliance issue as they asked, but no reply yet.

A few questions:

  • How long did your review take under the new system?
  • Has anyone had intents restored while the review was still pending?
  • Is there a better channel to reach the right team, or any way to speed things up?

The bot is used daily by our community, so any tips would be really appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Question Use emoji count to automatically delete a thread

1 Upvotes

I tried searching but havent found this bot feature. We have a thread channel that is supposed to be a trophy room of the best items and its constantly filled with junk items, i was hoping to have the ability for a bot to self groom the threads if a post got more than 10 downvotes.

Anyone have an idea?

Question For anyone running minigame bots: what actually keeps members playing after the first week?

0 Upvotes

I'm working on a Discord Activity with daily puzzles (a word game, trivia, a daily move-count puzzle). Finished runs post a small result card in the channel, and up to 3 players share one card so it doesn't spam.

What I'm unsure about:

  1. Daily challenge vs. always-on games: which retains better in your experience?

  2. Do server-level leaderboards or weekly events matter more than global ranks?

  3. What permissions or behaviours make admins remove a bot immediately?

Happy to share what we've learned so far if it's useful to anyone.

Question A Bot to Import *Direct Messages* Into Another DM

0 Upvotes

Hello,

TL;DR:

I want to:

  • Export direct message data with one individual
  • Import this data into another account
  • Have it be minimalist with the proper profile picture and username that corresponds to the correct person (similar to tupperbox)
  • (Preferably) include the date the message was sent

For some context:

Google has decided to no longer let me log into the e-mail account with the password I know is correct (I saved it with a password manager and have used it many times to log in). This e-mail has only one important account tied to it--Discord.

Issue: Due to a change a few years ago, Discord no longer lets support change your e-mail address. And you can't change your e-mail address without having access to your e-mail address.

The reason this matters is because I have a long DM with a close friend of mine (some 30,000 messages), and I would like to keep access to it. There is no way to properly import a DM with Discord, but this is exactly what I need.

And, so, this leads me to my question:

Is there a bot or some other method that can allow me to export all direct messages sent to and received from an individual and import it into another account.

I know how to export the direct messages (using an external tool that rhymes with scrub-a-dub-dub), but importing them is another matter.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Question Looking for Discord Server Owners to Interview About Engagement & Retention

1 Upvotes

Looking to interview Discord server owners (5–10 minutes)

Hey! I'm researching how Discord server owners measure engagement and member retention.

I'm especially interested in gaming communities and servers that regularly welcome new members.

I'd love to learn:

  • How you measure whether members return and stay active
  • What analytics tools you currently use
  • What's hardest about understanding why engagement drops

This is research for a potential tool I'm exploring, not a sales pitch. I'm not asking for server access or private member data.

If you manage a Discord server and are willing to share your experience, please reply or DM me. Thanks!

Question What are you looking for in a Discord bot that you aren’t getting right now?

0 Upvotes

I’m working on a Discord bot and would like to hear what other server owners and admins actually need.

What’s something you still do manually because you haven’t found a bot that handles it well? Or something existing bots offer, but make unnecessarily complicated?

Could be a missing feature, easier setup, better customization, pricing, or just wanting the thing to work reliably.

Also curious whether you prefer one bot that handles several jobs or separate bots that each do one thing really well.

What would make a bot worth adding to your server?

Question Are any cool games with discord bots?

3 Upvotes

I obv have no money, so Im asking if there are some free online bots with cool games to play with friends.

I feel like the majority of bots out there are like: "here have this pet! Take care of him" or they are useful just for moderation and economy.

I'm searching for a bot that has simple board games in it.

Is this possible? Discord Reminder Bot?

2 Upvotes

I want a discord reminder bot that will give daily reminders about doing something on a specific day

(for example: let’s say, an event starts and ends every Sunday at 12 am)
i want the discord bot to remind me every single day until i react to the message, to signal that I’ve completed the event, but then start reminding me again after Sunday passes

sort of like, the bot could have a certain role to ping but reacting to the message removes it
but when the specific event time starts again, the bot gives it again until you react to mark as completed for that week

does this exist? if not, is it possible to code? i’ve never worked with bot coding so id love some help on this : )

Question Bot that tracks individual joins/leaves?

1 Upvotes

I have a bot that tracks each time a member joins or leaves, but i’m looking for one that specifically can check how many times a user has been in my server before.

For example, I have a friend that doesn’t like to stick around in servers and they only come around once every month or so, then leave the server again. Is there a bot that could track when he joins/leaves/joins again, that it is his second time in the server, etc?

Not really looking for custom bots or make my own but looking for something that already has this functionality.

Question Lf Slot machine bot

2 Upvotes

I’m looking for an animated slot machine bot where I can add unlimited png images into it and without having a fake virtual currency to spin it.

Animated slot machine similar to the dank memer /slot bot where you can actually see it roll randomly.

Is there a known slot machine like this or would I need to make one or pay for one.

Question What's the best bot for levels & level based roles, in a free plan?

3 Upvotes

There's dynobot and carlbot, but they don't support this feature on the freemium plan.

I used probot for this but it has been down for weeks and seems it's not gonna recover any soon.
