Baccara | 'Yes Sir, I Can Boogie' (1977) 💃🪩
I am such a sucker for disco, and this is one of those songs people sometimes call cheesy that I will defend completely without embarrassment 😅
'Yes Sir, I Can Boogie' was Baccara’s debut single in 1977. It became an enormous hit across Europe and reached number one in the UK, making Baccara the first female duo as well as the first Spanish act ever to top the UK singles chart. The pair had an unusual beginning; Mayte Mateos and María Mendiola were Spanish flamenco dancers who were discovered while performing for tourists in Fuerteventura before being signed to RCA.
Musically it has everything I want from late '70s Eurodisco. A steady four-on-the-floor beat, groovy prominent bass, sweeping strings and those lovely feminine dual vocals floating over the top of the mix.
Their voices are a huge part of the appeal for me. The slightly breathy delivery and Spanish accents make the song sound simultaneously glamorous, playful and a bit unusual when set against such polished orchestral disco production.
I also really like how uplifting it is. There's nothing remotely subtle about the song’s determination to make you dance, but that is precisely why it works. It feels flirtatious and feminine without losing that big, driving disco groove.
It was written by Frank Dostal and Rolf Soja (with the latter also producing and arranging the track) and went on to sell over 16 million copies worldwide, securing a Guinness World Record. For a track that could easily have been dismissed as disposable disco at the time, it has had a remarkably long life.
That afterlife has taken some amusing turns. Sophie Ellis-Bextor has covered it, it became an unofficial anthem for the Scottish national football team and one of my old favourites, The Fratellis, performed their own version in 2021 and subsequently released it for charity.
Apparently the late María Mendiola was not especially impressed with The Fratellis' interpretation either, feeling they had taken too much of the disco out of it, which makes me like her even more 😂
People talk about guilty pleasures, but I've never really understood why good pop or disco is supposed to require guilt in the first place. If a song is this catchy, beautifully arranged and capable of making me immediately want to dance, I’m quite happy to enjoy it without qualification.
Pure glittery Eurodisco joy !💃✨
