Discussion Orbit Pop is live on Devvit: 100 timed match-3 levels with destructible shields

Orbit Pop is now playable inside Reddit. I’m the creator and directed the game design around quick match-3 rounds with an extra objective: clear every shield as well as reach the score target.

The game has 100 timed levels with increasing difficulty, adjacent planet swaps, cascades, four-match rockets, and five-match or T/L bombs. Shielded planets cannot move until neighboring matches or special blasts break their shields; later levels add two-hit shields.

Progress saves to your Reddit account, and there is a daily leaderboard. The interface is in English, and all levels are free.

Choose Let’s play, then Start level.

Feature Request Real-time multiplayer fighting game in a post: details on the block, and a domain exception request for our authoritative server (follow-up to 1v1nsx7)

Following up on 1v1nsx7, where u/Xenccc invited a new post describing exactly how we are blocked and what we would need from a realtime service. Here are the details for our case, plus a formal domain exception request, since the HTTP Fetch Policy says: "If you have a use case that our Devvit server does not support, please submit your request with detailed justification for a possible exception."

The game. NANQUIM (nanquim.gg, linked only for technical context) is a 2D fighting game, 1v1 and up to 8 players per room. The Devvit app is nanquim-gg. We built and playtested an offline-only build, but decided not to ship it: the game only makes sense online. We measured the webview CSP in playtest: connect-src only allows webview.devvit.net, *.redditmedia.com, *.redditstatic.com, *.redd.it and blob:, so wss://ws.nanquim.gg and https://play.nanquim.gg are blocked (securitypolicyviolation connect-src, enforce). This post is about bringing the real multiplayer mode into a post.

Current netcode (measured in our code, not estimated)

  • Authoritative server, simulation at 60 ticks per second.
  • Client sends input every tick (60 messages per second per player, with the last few frames repeated for loss tolerance).
  • Server sends a full state snapshot every 3 ticks (20 Hz) to every player in the room.
  • Binary protocol (DataView, big endian), small messages.
  • Client side prediction and reconciliation, server side anti-cheat (input validation, rate limits, result validation).
  • Global matchmaking across 8 regions, so players are matched to the closest region and latency stays under 100 ms.

Why the Devvit server cannot carry this (the "use case it does not support")

  1. Persistent connection. The web view client can only call its own /api/ routes, and the Devvit server is request/response with no WebSocket and no streaming. A fighting game needs one long lived, bidirectional connection per player.
  2. Message rate. 60 inputs per second per player means 480 requests per second for an 8 player room if every input became an /api/ call. Realtime is server to client only and documented at 100 messages per second per installation, which is about 5 concurrent rooms per subreddit at 20 Hz snapshots.
  3. Latency budget. At 60 ticks, every extra 16.7 ms is one more frame of rollback. Relaying through serverless HTTP plus Realtime adds at least two hops with no published latency or ordering guarantee.
  4. Authority and anti-cheat. Results must be validated by our server, which holds the simulation. A client only or Redis only model cannot be authoritative.
  5. Regions. Our matchmaking routes players to 8 regions; the Devvit server cannot pick the closest game server per player.

What we are asking

(a) A supported path for a real-time fighting game inside a post: 60 Hz input, an authoritative server we run ourselves over WebSocket, under 100 ms round trip. If the answer is "not possible today", knowing that clearly is also useful.

(b) A domain exception for play.nanquim.gg and ws.nanquim.gg. Justification:

  • Both are our own game servers (HTTPS and WSS only), operated by ALAS TECHNOLOGY LLC (United States), contact hi@nanquim.gg.
  • play.nanquim.gg: matchmaking and room assignment (HTTPS). ws.nanquim.gg: the match connection (WSS), the part the Devvit server does not support.
  • Data: the only identifier would be the Reddit userId, anonymized (hashed) before it leaves the app. No usernames or emails, no IP based profiling, no ads, no tracking, no login outside Reddit, no links out from the post.
  • We would accept any constraint that makes this reviewable: a fixed hostname list, rate limits, an audit of the protocol, a kill switch on your side.

We also submitted the External Endpoints access form today so our server can push room state and validated match results into the app (well under the 5 requests per second limit). That covers scoreboards, not the live match.

(c) Roadmap question: is WebTransport, WebRTC (data channels), or an official Reddit hosted relay or proxy for persistent connections on the roadmap? We understand from u/RedditParadox in 1v1nsx7 that there are no plans for WebSocket at the moment. If a different transport is being considered, we would be happy to test it and share latency numbers from real matches.

Thanks for reading. Happy to provide protocol details, traffic captures, or join a call if that helps the review.

Help Does the api go under review again if I update my app?

My api got rejected, I uploaded a new version but the api review did not go back to a "pending" state. Is this a visual bug or do I need to change my api name to get it reviewed again?

Help Supabase fetch domain stuck at "Rejected" for 9 days with no reason, modmails unanswered

Hi, I am looking for help getting a fetch domain re-reviewed. I've followed the documented process and reached out through the normal channels but haven't gotten a response, so posting here in case someone from the team can take a look.

App slug: movie-quotes-app
Domain: rjgdcnzjkzxpvqohbtdp.supabase.co

Timeline:

  • Oct 5: Domain shows Rejected in the developer portal. No reason given.
  • Oct 6: Updated the README with a Fetch Domains section explaining why Supabase is needed, confirmed Terms and Privacy Policy links are in the app details, resubmitted the app, sent modmail to r/Devvit, and opened a ticket in #support-tickets on Discord.
  • Oct 8: App version 0.0.23 was approved. Domain still Rejected. Sent a second modmail using the resubmit template (app slug + domain).
  • Oct 13: Tuesday review window passed, no change. Both modmails still unanswered.
  • Today: Domain still shows Rejected, last updated Oct 5 (9 days ago).

Why Supabase: the app stores movie and move metadata used for hints, each player's play history, and the points ledger behind the daily and all-time leaderboards. Those need joins and ranked queries across every post in the subreddit, which Devvit Redis doesn't support. Only the app server calls this domain.

My other app had its Supabase domain approved without issue, so I don't think it's a policy problem with the provider itself. The app can't run without this database, so I'm fully blocked until it's re-reviewed.

If there's something I need to fix, I'm happy to do it right away.

Thanks for any help with this. It would be very appreciated.

Duck Answered So I want to create an app to post data off my private network to my subreddit

I have a private web server I run that is VPN-only access. I have a domain name w/ SSL certificate that is bound to an A-record of 192.168.1 .2. So that way nobody can hack into my computer.

I want to create an app to automate things a bit. I have a Patreon which I post the link to daily on my subreddit. I got Discord bot automation down, and it stores all the posts in my database using the Patreon API. I applied for a normal Reddit dev account, which looks like it will work to then post my post links to my subreddit, but the problem is - I have this locked down as hard as possible.

From what I have read, Devvit supposedly will require to "phone back home" to my computer. Since I have no open ports/services on my network, this is an impossible architecture to comply with. Unless I somehow create a SSH tunnel to AWS or Azure and then have that AWS server reachable, but I'm worried if someone compromises the cloud then they compromise my computer.

Help Supabase domain rejected, What's best way to connect an external admin dashboard?

Hey all, building a daily challenge game. The challenges are managed in an existing admin dashboard (Supabase, relational db) where the team schedules daily challenges and reviews community submissions. The game only needs to read the daily challenge and send back play counts/submissions.

Requested our `<project>.supabase.co` domain and it got rejected (no reason shared). The new fetch domain checker also says Supabase projects are "not eligible", but the HTTP fetch policy on the same page still lists Supabase as "may be granted with exceptions" for relational databases. So a bit confused which one is current.

Questions:

- Is Supabase still possible with ToS/Privacy links added, or is it a hard no now?

- Is external endpoints (dashboard calls the app instead) the recommended way for this? We're applying for access, any idea how long that usually takes?

Thanks!

Announcement Devvit Blocks Deprecation - Phase 2

Post image
23 Upvotes

Devvit Team: What about Blocks deprecation?
App Developers: We’ve already had it.
Devvit Team: We’ve had one, yes. But what about second Blocks deprecation?
Devvit Team Members stare at each other.
Devvit Team: I don’t think they know about second Blocks deprecation.

If you missed the previous communications on Blocks deprecation (Announcement • Update), the gist is that an older architecture of how we configure and render Devvit apps is going away. Instead, Devvit Web is the final frontier! 🖖

We’ll be completing the deprecation of Blocks in the Devvit 0.15.0 release by removing remaining blocks-based app configs. As most apps using the Blocks renderer have now migrated to Devvit Web, we hope the forthcoming changes will have a minimal impact.

Deprecation Phase 1: No More Blocks Rendering (Completed June 30th):

  • Deprecated and rejecting all new or updated apps using addCustomPostType for post rendering

Deprecation Phase 2: No More Blocks Configuration (Monday, October, 19th):

  • All apps using devvit.yaml need to fully move to devvit.json
  • Reminder: The blocks property of devvit.json is deprecated

Apps that do not upgrade to the new version of Devvit will not be disrupted due to these changes. However, anyone who has not migrated their apps to Devvit Web should do so to continue development of their app.

You can find our migration guide here, along with more resources in the full Devvit docs. If you have questions, reach out in r/Devvit, join our official Discord, or leave a comment here and we’ll do our best to help!

Thanks for your attention, may Devvit Web protect you, and be ever in your favor.

Discussion A small Devvit experiment on onboarding and first interaction for games

I've been trying to improve the play rate of my Devvit game, r/ColourMap.

My original approach was to use "zero friction": no title screen for user-created puzzles, no extra popup, no "Play" button. You see the puzzle, solve it, or scroll past it. The idea was to optimize the game specifically for feed plays.

The completion rate was already solid at 80%+, so I didn't think the main problem was the game itself. The bigger issue seemed to be the onboarding / first interaction, because our overall play rate was usually around 10-15%, especially on days when I didn't post on r/GamesOnReddit and instead posted in more general subreddits.

For this test, "play rate" or "played" means the percentage of exposed users who interact with any playable element of the post.

The game is still fairly new, so the statistics are volatile, and I wouldn't treat this as a best possible way. But the results were useful enough to give me a better idea of what users seem to prefer.

After trying different UI and on-boarding ideas, I started wondering whether my zero-friction approach might actually be wrong.

So I tested three different approaches with 1908 players.

A - Direct play

The puzzle is immediately playable. There is no launch screen, only a subtle startup animation.

620 exposed / 140 played - 22.6%

B - Light title overlay

The puzzle is already visible, but an overlay asks the user to "Click/Tap to Play." Clicking it activates the puzzle in the post, there is no transition to a separate window or popup.

627 exposed / 106 played - 16.9%

C - Full title screen

The post initially shows only a game title screen. Pressing "Click/Tap to Play" opens the game in a separate game window/popup.

661 exposed / 126 played - 19.1%

(A user was counted as exposed once at least 60% of the puzzle/title screen was visible. Only counted logged-in users.)

The result surprised me. I expected B to be the best middle ground, but it actually performed the worst.

My current theory is:
- A is obvious because the game is simply there and interactive.
- C is obvious because it behaves like a traditional game launcher.
- B may be ambiguous: it looks like the game is already there, but then asks for an extra click before you can use it. It might also resemble a promotional post (something like "Hey, check out my game on [random website]") rather than something you can immediately play on Reddit.

For now, I'm going back to the "zero friction" approach.

I'm curious whether anyone else has tested similar direct-play vs. "Tap to Play" approaches in Devvit apps, and whether you saw anything similar.

Update Release 0.14.8: New Fetch Domain Checker and Other Fixes

Release Date: October 12, 2026

You can save time and avoid potential review delays with the new Fetch Domain Checker. Check whether an HTTP fetch domain is likely to be approved before adding it to devvit.json, so you can identify potential policy issues earlier in development. The checker provides guidance only; domains must still be reviewed and approved when you playtest or upload your app.

Other Fixes

  • Removing the menu field from devvit.json correctly removes the corresponding menu items from the UI.
  • The dev.subreddit field in devvit.json now supports subreddit names that begin with a number.

Feature Request Is Devvit ever going to support media embeds?

Post image

Compare: Current Reddit desktop (left) vs Reddit Live desktop (middle) vs Devvit app (right)

The amount of friction Devvit creates significant. I'm a mod and currently working on apps for communities, but I can tell this is going to drop engagement.

(It would be great if Devvit just allowed Embedly or similar, which Reddit already used in the past)

Feedback Request Lairbreak → Build a lair, then raid everyone else’s. A new daily dungeon game.

I just launched my new game, Lairbreak, on r/lairbreak. You build a 7×7 lair with monsters and traps around a pile of gold, then take two raiders into other players’ lairs to try to steal their gold. As you level up, you get access to better traps/obstacles/enemies for your dungeon, and to better raiders.

Back in the day, I loved playing a game called Dungeon Assault by FunOrb/Jagex. This game is heavily inspired by my memory of that one. Maybe it will spark some nostalgia for anyone else who played it.

Some developer things that might interest you all →

  • The inline post shows live counts, a countdown to the daily reset, and the viewer’s own status, and a tap anywhere opens the game.
  • Every outcome is rolled on the server from a stored seed, so the client never decides anything and a raid can be replayed exactly.
    • This actually allows the server to run simulations on your own lair and give it a difficulty rating. And it lets the server give you odds for every move you can make before hand, which gives it a unique game mechanic.
  • The game posts its own daily post and pins it, with an hourly retry if Reddit hiccups at midnight. Brag comments are a single tap that show what's going to be posted so that it adheres to Reddit's policies.
  • All art is from one sprite atlas, including the subreddit icons, banners and catalog assets, which a script I have draws from the same sprites (so, supports my CI/CD automations).

The stack is a classic Devvit, Hono, React, Redis (via Devout), and Vitest with the Devvit test fixture. Nothing special.

I'm most interested if the first play / onboarding experience is clear. The Help explains everything, but for now I opted to try to use UX instead of a formal tutorial to guide new players. Let me know...

Check it out 🙃 → r/lairbreak

Feedback Request I built Beamline, a daily light puzzle that runs inside Reddit posts

Hi all, I just shipped my first Devvit app and would love feedback from people who build here.

Beamline is a daily light puzzle. You place mirrors and splitters on a grid, mix red, green and blue beams, and light every crystal in as few pieces as possible.

What’s in it:
• A new daily puzzle every day (67 verified puzzles in the pool), pinned automatically
• A leaderboard per post, and a “Comment my result” button after you solve
• An in-post editor so players can build, solve and publish their own puzzles

Built with Devvit web views, Redis for leaderboards and the scheduler for the daily post.

Try today’s daily in r/BeamlinePuzzle. I’d especially like to know: is the first puzzle clear without instructions, and does the difficulty feel right?

Duck Answered Question : How to ask for domain approval after rejection?

Hello, I am new to using devvit and I am trying do the following flow :

  1. Devvit app polls my website here for JSON via GET - https://test.pokerestock.app/applicationlayer/socialfeed/reddit/productcardhomepage.json

  2. Devvit app parses available products in queue for the particular subreddit - in discovery phase if possible would like the devvit app to exist in 4 subreddits - and then makes a post to the subreddit with the image, uri, and meta data.

  3. Devvit app then issues a DELETE to my API via - test.api.pokerestock.topdealalerts.com/api/v1/socialmediafeed/reddit/sku/{sku}/region/{region}/company/{company}/version/{version}

4. The product is deleted, and dequeued from backend. Devvit app sleeps for throttling duration, and eventually wakes up again to poll again.

I am trying to do this with my 2 test domains and if successful move to production, but my initial reddit domain pieces were rejected possible because I didn't provide explicit explanation for their uses. I have since added that.

Is there any way to ask for a domain review again? I am trying to do basic hello world sandbox testing before using production servers.

Can someone please explain if the form as I have it written now is appropriate and if its ok to ask for re-review? If so how to ask for re-review? I also don't see a rejection reason similar to other review processes like Google or Apple so without feedback am flying blind. Is it appropriate to submit for review and iterate with reviewer or is this a waterfall model where you have 1 review chance and then are forced to make a different app entirely?

I'm desperately trying to develop and iterate towards a solution and require feedback.

Description - https://i.ibb.co/hRcNqvjN/image.png

Domains - https://i.ibb.co/5hhsJ4sL/image.png (I didn't know how devvit works I would have added just the 2 test domains if I knew it auto added URI from devvit JSON)

Feedback Request Feedback wanted on Baja Blitz and how to organize challenges

I released the first devvit versions of Baja Blitz mini games in r/BajaBlitz about a month ago. Since then I've switched up how the three game modes are accessed and tried to consolidate race results into comments on dedicated posts, instead of everyone posting a bunch of "beat my time" posts.

The Daily Ghost Race is a unique track each day with a separate leader board. I'm making the current day's challenge an "Event". Right now I'm not restricting prior day courses, but I'm noticing fragmentation in players. For instance, most races were from 2 days ago (when I cross posted to r/GamesOnReddit). It seems like people aren't seeing the current race, maybe because they aren't visiting my subreddit.

How have other people structured challenges? What's worked for you? What's recommended? And if you're willing to take 20 seconds to try today's challenge and provide feedback, I'd be greatly appreciative! I'd love to make this fun and engaging for the reddit community.

Feature Request Let users install Devvit games and apps on their home screen or desktop

Hi Devvit team!

I'd love to suggest a feature that could significantly improve player retention and engagement across Reddit games and apps.

Allow users to install Devvit games and apps directly to their phone's home screen or computer desktop.

Every Devvit game could have an optional "Install App" or "Add to Home Screen" button.

Ideally, this would:

* Create a shortcut with the game's own name and icon.

* Launch the game directly, without having to search for its Reddit post or subreddit.

* Work on Android, iOS, and desktop.

* Keep the user logged into Reddit and preserve their game progress.

* Support a standalone, app-like experience when technically possible.

*Allow developers to enable this feature without hosting or publishing separate applications.

This could potentially be implemented using PWA technology, native Reddit deep links, or another platform-level solution.

Why does this matter?

Games depend heavily on returning players. Having a game icon on your home screen makes it much easier to build daily habits, improve retention, and grow active communities.

It could also make Devvit games feel like real standalone experiences while keeping them connected to Reddit.

I believe this would be a valuable addition to the Devvit ecosystem, especially for developers building games with daily challenges, leaderboards, and persistent progression.

Would the Devvit team consider adding this capability to the roadmap?
