Moderator post ⚠️🚨 The subreddit's creep problem and why the current Reddit algorithm puts women at risk by design.

Post image
59 Upvotes

This is a rant triggered by the fact that I'm sick and tired of perverts in the sub, and I hate that no matter how much I try to keep this community safe, Reddit itself enables this behaviour and doesn't seem to be doing anything about it.

Keeping this sub free of creeps is a daily battle. The standard disgusting pervy comments, weird flirty remarks, and the daily assortment of freaks who post AI-generated gooner bait (or worse, catfish with pictures of actual women). Y'all won't believe how much filth this sub actually gets, because most of it gets removed by the mods or our filters before anyone gets to see it, and they get banned on sight. (None of it stops them from DMing you btw, but more on that later.)

I knew that for some reason, Reddit had been showing this community to pervs... A lot. So I believed that if I consistently kept the creeps out (by removing their content and banning their accounts), the algorithm would realize this is just a wedding planning community and would stop recommending it to people who're here primarily for porn. It has been almost a year of me doing that, and there has been no reduction in the incoming creep traffic.

Then I came across this post by a moderator of a different sub, and the discussion gave me a whole new perspective on what may actually be happening.

NSFW consumers make up a huge population of the Reddit userbase. But Reddit can't put ads in NSFW subreddits, and NSFW posts can't be put in the main feed where ads are shown. So Reddit has to show them SFW communities adjacent to their interests.

There are countless NSFW/fetish communities built around sexualizing south asian women, wives, brides, weddings, sarees, lehengas etc. So Reddit already has a huge number of people using those words to look for sexual content. (It also doesn't help that "desi" is a particularly cursed keyword on Reddit. Go search "desi" and filter by communities. You'll have to scroll for quite a while before you find an actual non-porn sub about South Asian people.)

So the algorithm sees a community with the word "desi" in its name, with a large volume of women's fashion posts, and users who overlap with communities interested in sexualized versions of those exact subjects. It then decides that these communities are related enough to actively recommend our posts to those people. Reddit can take your completely ordinary not-at-all sexual pictures and put them in front of people who are specifically looking for women to sexualize.

And this isn't happening to just this sub. If you've been active in any sub where women often post their pictures, you'll know how common and widespread the issue is. "RIP DMs" is a ubiquitous comment under posts where a woman posts her picture .

And then there are DMs.

This is one of the most cursed features of Reddit. A community ban only stops accounts from posting & commenting. Even the ban message explicitly states:

"You can still view and subscribe to the community..."

So even after they are banned, they can still browse the subreddit, see your pictures, save them, misuse them, and potentially send you whatever disgusting shit they want. That is an absolutely insane oversight and completely defeats the purpose of the ban when it comes to protecting people from these accounts.

I hate that I have to say this. I hate that after doing everything I can to keep this subreddit safe, I still have to tell the women here that they have to take steps to protect themselves because we are powerless against the algorithm and who it chooses to show your images to.

So ladies, please be mindful about sharing your pictures anywhere on Reddit. We will keep doing everything we can to keep this sub clean, but there are limits to what moderators can control.

  1. As much as possible, please avoid posting pictures that prominently show your body, especially if you don't need to for the purpose of the post. Consider cropping or covering parts of the image that don't need to be visible. (You shouldn't have to do this, but the way Reddit is, you cannot assume your pictures will only be shown to the audience you intended.)

  2. If you're posting your pictures, please consider shutting DMs off for a while. (Again, you shouldn't have to do this, but unfortunately basic decency is too much to expect from people whose brains have been completely rotted by porn.)

  3. If you do get pervy DMs, report them for Spam -> "Unsolicited DMs", (or "Harassment" for the particularly graphic ones). If they are DMing you, chances are they are DMing many other women too. If enough of them report it, Reddit suspends the sender's ability to DM.

Based on the comments under the mod post linked above, Admins have responded and are looking into the issue. But until then, please take care of your safety on this site.

Wedding rituals/traditions I feel my parents are being unjust. 1 month to go before the wedding and haven’t informed the dates to be in-laws.

• Upvotes

Me and my partner are from different faiths and different states of India. So our mother tongues are also different. I’m from South India (female-29) and my partner is from East India (male-31).
We have been dating each other for past 8 years.

We have informed our parents and got them to meet each other 3 years back. Since then, there have been 3-4 phone conversations between our parents in a mutually comfortable language, Hindi.
We planned to get a SMA done and then do traditional cultural wedding.

My parents have consulted a priest and have gotten a date confirmed for exactly a month later. But the issue is that they haven’t communicated it to his parents yet.
I don’t know if it is hesitation, anxiety, disagreement or simply avoidance of a significant conversation.

At any point when I bring this up, my mom goes into an emotional fit and she exits the room.
My dad doesn’t want to go ahead without taking her onboard. Cos he feels, if he does call the to be in-laws without onboarding my mom onto the plan, she will altogether behave very badly at a later point.

I feel stuck to be a part of a family where they are displaying no emotional maturity. And to be planning a long life with a partner who feels I’m to be blamed for my family’s activities.

Post image

Hello!

I’m looking to get a lehenga stitched in Chandni Chowk and delivered to Australia within the next 6 weeks. I’ve attached the style I’m looking for.

I’d appreciate any recommendations or feedback on reliable designers or boutiques that can recreate this style, especially those experienced in international shipping and meeting tight deadlines.

I’m currently considering Ritu Dzign. Has anyone had any experience with them, or would you recommend any other boutiques in Chandni Chowk?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Miscellaneous How do working couples actually manage planning a big Indian wedding? 😭

Hi everyone,

I wanted to ask all the brides and grooms here, especially those who were working full-time while planning their wedding. What were the biggest challenges you faced and what do you wish you had planned earlier?

Me and my bf are planning to get married next year and would love to take ideas from other's experiences.

How did you manage the shopping and planning amidst a full-time job? Things like buying outfits, getting them tailored, jewellery shopping, venue booking, guest lists, decor and themes, menu, invitations, etc. How much time does all of this realistically take and how early would you recommend starting? Also, what were the simplest workarounds that saved you time, stress and unnecessary running around?

PS: We live in a different city than our families and planning to have a destination wedding. Our parents too are working professionals and won't be able to help much in planning. That's why we wish to be prepared in advance. I also hope your advice helps other couples in this subreddit planning their wedding.

Bridal fashion advice Ladies, help me decide my reception 🛐

Kanchi silk half saree style lehenga
Lehenga
Designer Saree

PLEASE SAVE ME

I'm torn! I can't decide between designer saree, south indian style lehenga made of kanchipuram silk saree or the usual lehenga.

Only thing I'm certain of is I want to go for something simple and elegant. I find heavy work saree/lehenga tacky (at least the ones I can afford, high end ones are a different topic).

Please suggest which one you think is best for reception out of the 3 above

For reference I'm 5'2 and 50 kgs

Looking for shop recommendations in Chandni Chowk for my bhabhi’s engagement lehenga!
We’re looking for subtle yet unique lehengas with modern embroidery, not the usual heavily shimmery golden/champagne/copper designs. I’ve attached reference images for the kind of work we like, but haven’t been able to find similar designs.
We prefer pastels or champagne shades, avoiding grey and white. Budget is ideally under ₹60k, max ₹80k.
Please suggest shops that have unique designs and not just the usual generic/traditional stuff.

Shops we have already searched- jb designers, dvasa by abhi and ctc global

I had gold champagne dress in my mind for my sangeet . I thought it would look good on me as a brown skin girlie but when I went for shopping it was not suiting me at all. Ended up buying this blue one.

My fiance was not a big fan of the fish cut. But I think it looks good on my body

Thoughts please ? 🥲

Rant/Vent ⚡ Disinvited family now struggling with fallout

So I’m getting married and I have some family I didn’t want to invite. Specifically one aunt in law who has spoken a lot of bad things about my mum and grandparents, started fights, looks down on my other aunt in law, and started rumours about me. She has previously called me to say bad things about my grandparents and when I told the family, she declined and said I’m lying. Everyone but my uncle (her husband) believed me. My mum didn’t let me release an audio recording I had of the convo to keep the peace.

In the last 3-4 years they have not spoken to me or asked about me at all. They come to our city and stay with friends and see my mum outside. This is different to before. My uncle even came to my house overnight and didn’t speak to me while I was at the same dining table. He did speak to me to say bye when he left.

Now for the wedding, because of all these issues and how my aunt always says shit about me and has ruined the last 3 big family functions. I said I don’t want to invite her. Mum and I discussed this in so much detail and it was a huge cause of stress. My family would talk bad about her but still wanted me to invite her for peace. Even though everyone agreed she could mess up things.

We finally agreed to invite them and sent invitations. She asked them to start speaking to me again (I didn’t know) so that I’d be comfortable. They didn’t bother. My mum asked my aunt not to wear red because I’m wearing red, my aunt said she would because that’s her favourite colour. She also said she’d be staying at a family friends house who was a big part of mums divorce/rumours about me.

Mum and I are paying for the wedding jointly and I’m handling everything with no support. I was going through so much stress due to this issue I started to have medical issues (same with mum).

Eventually one day mum and I fought and mum (I said not to) called my uncle and asked him to only come to our second wedding ceremony and not the first one or the sangeet or come by himself. He said okay.

The fallout: nothing happened directly with us. But my other uncle has said he won’t come to any event either. He’s sick so wouldn’t come to all anyways. My uncle (who we disinvited) said he won’t even come to the Sikh wedding to my other uncle because we don’t want them at the other events.

I know my mums upset. She’s a family person. But she also maintains that she’s not spending all this money for my wedding to be ruined because if my aunt comes that’s certain. My other family said they don’t blame me but I can’t help but feel like a horrible person who’s torn the family apart.

My uncle isn’t bad. He can’t help who he’s partner is. But I genuinely wouldn’t have been able to enjoy my own wedding due to constant fear of history repeating itself. I fear I’m the problem.

Anyone been in a similar situation? Just venting frustrations but open to advice.

Wedding rituals/traditions North Indian weddings: Who usually pays for the groom’s guests’ stay, baraat, etc.?

Hey everyone!

Getting married this December in Dehradun, and I’m trying to understand how wedding expenses are traditionally divided between the bride and groom’s families, especially in North Indian weddings.

For some context, here’s our guest count:

  • Engagement/Sangeet

  • Groom’s side: 40

  • Bride’s side: 100

    • Haldi
  • Groom’s side: 40

  • Bride’s side: 100

    • Wedding
  • Groom’s side: 60

  • Bride’s side: 200

Around 30 guests from my side will be travelling to bride’s city uttarakhand and will need accommodation.

Current expense arrangement:

  • I’m contributing 40% towards the wedding venue(haldi+wedding same day - 18 lakhs, engagement a day before-2 lakh).
  • I’m covering accommodation for my 30 guests.
  • I’m also contributing 40% towards wedding photography.(1.6 lakh is what photographer quoted)
  • Baraat band, ghodi, etc. are additional expenses I’m trying to figure out.

I’ve heard that traditionally, when the wedding happens in the bride’s hometown, the bride’s family takes care of accommodation and hospitality for the baraatis, while the groom’s family handles the band, ghodi and procession.

But I’m not sure how commonly this is actually followed nowadays.

Would love to hear from people who’ve recently gotten married in North India, especially Uttarakhand, Delhi, UP or Punjab.

How did you split these expenses? Did the bride’s family arrange the groom’s guests’ accommodation, or did each side cover their own guests? And who paid for the baraat band and ghodi?

Also, when there’s a big difference in guest count between both sides, do families usually split wedding expenses 50/50, proportionally, or just follow traditional customs?

Not trying to make it a competition about who pays more. Just genuinely curious about what’s considered normal these days, since this is all pretty new to me.

Would appreciate some real experiences!

Wedding guest fashion advice where to find modest lehengas?

i’ve been searching through pakistani brands, but have preferred indian designs so far because i like more intricate heavy work. the issue is indian brands aren’t very keen on extending the choli, and sometimes i can tell the lehenga wouldn’t even look right with a modest choli. does anyone know any brands that has modest options? or options that wouldn’t look odd if customized modest? my budget is $3k and this is my cousins wedding

Venue/Decor Finding venue in Delhi NCR in 16-17 lacs budget

Hi everyone,

I am getting married in November 2027, I am from Delhi, my partner and I want to do Haldi function a day before the wedding together and the next day we will be getting married.

The gathering of Haldi will be around 250 people and gathering of wedding will be around 600 people!

My partner and I are in the research phase and want to explore venues in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon.

Our budget for both the events + food + Venue + Music + Decoration is around 16-17 lacs.

Suggest some venue options, it can be open ground, Banquet hall (Preferred), any 3 star hotel.

Also the budget is a strict restriction we can’t go above that!

Bridal fashion advice I need help with styling my post-haldi look, especially jewellery

Post image
13 Upvotes

They are adding some diamond buttis to the dupatta part to elevate the look but really not sure how to do jewellery for it. I realllyyyy don’t want the diamond look, I wanted something a little cooler. Like statement earrings and a cool arm cuff etc but nothing is working.

Event context:

I’m going to be having my haldi event at home, wearing a green set from Nomad Diaries. After which I’ll go up to freshen up and come down in this purple outfit while everyone else is still in yellow.

I wanted my outfit to feel unique yet comfortable, coz the next day I’m going to be in a full on bridal lehenga + reception outfit.

Hi, has anyone purchased from Aasopalav online ordering? (Timelines for off the rack ordering (to ship to US), experience with materials, feels, etc.)

I love this lehenga and can’t seem to find anything else similar to this.

Does anyone have any recommendations on other bridal stores to consider?

Vendor/store search (Self-Promo OK) Wedding organiser freelancer - for day to day opps

TL;DR: Wedding in Delhi NCR, November 2026. All bookings are done. Looking to hire ops/coordination person only — vendor management, logistics, on-ground event ops. Budget open to discuss. Want someone onboard NOW.

Problem statement:

I'm planning my brothers wedding (November 2026, Delhi NCR) and handling all bookings/arrangements myself — venue, vendors, hotels, catering, etc.

I also run my own business hence don't have the bandwidth to oversee day-to-day ops and on ground work on weekdays. Need an efficient project planner for 1 month.

I don't need a wedding planner (already done that job — venue, vendors, everything's booked). I need execution/coordination person. Please DM with intro and phone number. Thakns!

I’m getting married soon and on a tight deadline. We have planned a carnival themed Haldi, with a few performances before the event starts. Wondering if I should’ve explored more. Serious second thoughts!!
