Help me choose domain dba or sde

Hi everyone,

I have around 2 years of experience in full-stack development, with a stronger focus on backend development, and I currently work at a Big 4 company.

Initially, I worked on a project involving Node.js, React, and AWS. However, after my first client assignment, my company moved me to the DBA domain, where I am currently working with PostgreSQL EDB for an Indian bank in rotational shifts.

It has been around 3 months since I transitioned to this role, and I am still unsure whether this is the right career path for me.

Honestly, I never planned to become a DBA. During my internships, I worked with Java and C#, and later I gained experience with Node.js and React. I always envisioned my career in software development, particularly backend development, but I have never seriously considered database administration as a career.

My current experience can be summarized as:

Around 2 years in software development.

Around 5 months in DBA, and counting.

I am confused about which direction I should take. I don't have much knowledge about the long-term career prospects of a DBA, how this transition might affect my future opportunities, or how rotational shifts could impact my personal life in the long run.

Should I request a release from my current client and try to return to software development, or should I give the DBA domain more time and explore its career opportunities?

I don't want to make a decision that I might regret a few years down the line, especially when I have already invested 2 years in software development.

I'd really appreciate advice from people who have experience in software development, database administration, or both.

Measuring the "Bullwhip Effect" in multi-tier databases: Why immediate retries spike PostgreSQL variance by 48% (and how token-bucket budgets fix it)

Hi everyone,

I'm an undergraduate researcher studying variance amplification in multi-tier database pipelines (Client -> In-Memory Cache -> PgBouncer -> PostgreSQL).

In supply-chain management, the "Bullwhip Effect" (Lee et al., 1997) describes how small fluctuations in end-user demand amplify into massive orders upstream. We investigated whether analogous dynamics govern layered database systems across two mechanisms:

  1. **Forward Batching (M1):** Synchronized cache TTL expirations precipitating backend read stampedes.

  2. **Reverse Rationing Games (M2):** Database latency spikes triggering client timeout retries that cascade into metastable collapse.

We built a containerized testbed with **PostgreSQL 16, Redis 7, and PgBouncer 1.22**, enforcing native `statement_timeout = 80ms` cancellations:

* **The Problem:** Under overload (80 req/s, connection pool = 6), immediate retries inflated offered load by 1.25x and exploded backend variance by +48% (from 9.11 to 13.48), with clients fighting for pool slots.

* **The Mitigation:** Enforcing a client-side **Token-Bucket Retry Budget (beta = 10%)** strictly capped load gain to 1.10x and reduced backend variance by 23% (down to 10.34) without starving healthy queries.

* **Theoretical finding:** We also proved analytically why power-law skew (Zipf s > 1) inverts classical supply-chain theory, making deterministic phase staggering worse than randomized jitter during cache stampedes.

I recently published our preprint :

* **Preprint (ResearchGate):** https://doi.org/10.13140/RG.2.2.26891.04646

**I would love your feedback and critique:**

  1. Have you seen this compound "cache miss -> connection queue -> retry storm" failure mode in production systems?

  2. Are there specific PostgreSQL wait events (e.g., `BufMappingLock`, `ProcArrayLock`) or connection pooling edge cases you recommend measuring next?

  3. What mitigations do your teams use in production against retry storms?

Any technical critique or suggestions on how to improve the paper's rigor would be hugely appreciated!

How are you streaming data from on-prem databases to the cloud without downtime?

I'm helping plan a cloud migration and the one requirement nobody will compromise on is zero downtime.

The rough plan is an initial load, continuous CDC while production keeps running, then validate everything before switching applications over. I'd rather avoid piecing together different tools for each phase if there's a cleaner approach.

How have you handled this ''streaming data?''

I didn't want to pay for a license just to query my databases, so I built a free, native client in Rust. It idles at 69 MB of RAM.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I wanted two things from a database client: no license to pay, and a simple tool to look at my data without a heavy IDE eating my RAM. I couldn't find both, so I built my own: Savoia Studio.

It's 100% Rust with a GPU-rendered UI (GPUI). No webview, no JVM, no Electron.

Measured on macOS 27, M3 Pro, release build: - 69 MB idle (physical footprint, window open) - 205 ms from launch to first frame (median of 17 launches). The very first launch of a new build takes ~1.1 s while macOS scans the binary. - 0 frames over 16.7 ms scrolling 1,000,000 rows (3 of 5 runs; the other two are documented too)

Windows and Linux aren't benchmarked yet. Every run, good and bad, is in docs/benchmarks.

What it does today: - Schema explorer with ER diagrams and DDL - SQL console with schema-aware completion and history - Table data view with inline edits; you see the SQL before it commits - Dump and import (uses your pg_dump/mysqldump or a built-in engine) - TLS, SSH tunnels, read-only sessions, color-tagged connections - Command palette, light and dark themes

Free, with no trial, license key or account. MIT or Apache-2.0. MariaDB, SQLite, MongoDB and SQL Server are planned.

Download: https://joaogabriel55.github.io/savoia-studio/ Code: https://github.com/joaoGabriel55/savoia-studio

I'd love feedback, especially on what would make you switch from your current client.

Azure SQL Help - Urgent

To monitor the performance and availability for a thick client based system we recently delivered, the customer wants us to provide Here is the requirement:

  1. Need to measure and report response time to Azure SQL queries for about 6 scenarios. Session counts, availability, utilization metrics for Azure SQL to be provided.

  2. What native monitoring and metrics does Azure Files have to measure response times for files uploaded from devices connected to it.

What metrics needs to be extracted to measure all response times and how to be extracted.

This has to be measured for a period of 72 days with weekly and monthly reporting. Also, we do not have access to SSMS for Azure SQL and also the Azure Portal.

Thus , we need provide instructions to the customer IT Support team and they will provide the metrics and logs.

We have tried to get some help with AI tools but got conflicting response so need an Azure expert preferably Azure SQL DBA to help.

Much appreciated and thanks in advance.

PS: Application is thick client (yes I know) so no metrics can be pulled from endpoint devices. Don't ask why.

A database client that is fast and easy on your memory

Hello everyone,

I've been a developer for nearly 6 years and I loved how SequelAce used to work but right now it feels outdated and i encountered a problem where when i switched from mac to windows and linux there wasn't any client that matched its speed and ease of use and powertoys so I decided to code a tool for anyone who's trying to find a new, better and faster way to interact with their database.

This software is free to use, and open source so feel free to check out the code and to run it on your computer and I would like to know your opnion on it.

It works with MongoDB, MySQL and PostgreSQL

Is it worth learning Oracle SQL DBA in 2026? Or something else is better?

I have an Udemy course in Oracle SQL DBA by Ahmed Baraka. But I do not think learning it is worthwhile time commitment. I will need 2-3 months to learn it from the core. I personally believe, it will be a better idea to learn AI engineering from Chip Huyen's book.

But I am newbie to AI.

I want to ensure I can talk AI, walk AI....

What should I learn?

System integration

Hello, I'm currently working on a big project. We are using Oracle, ProjectWise and Procore. Does anyone know of software that can integrate them? I'm talking about communication between the platforms to have the same documentation updates and avoid running around between platforms to update them.

Thanks for your advise/help

I built a free, open-source tool that risk-scores MySQL SQL before you run it. v0.3.1 is out and I'd love DBAs to try to break it.

I am a 50-year-old veteran building an AgTech Startup from a laptop in Slovenia. My son runs cross-border tests from Germany. Rate our 66-table database architecture for the EU Honey Directive.

Hi everyone,

I am Serhii, a 50-year-old veteran currently living on the Slovenian coast (Piran). I don’t speak perfect English, and I write my posts using a translator, but I’ve spent months bootstrapping AgroNode & The Bee Temple Project (The Biosphere’s Digital Twin Operating System).

Recently, I hit a heavy solo sprint. Primorski tehnološki park rejected me due to the language barrier, but I am not stopping. With the support of my colleague Edi, I officially acquired our enterprise data domain: agronodedata🚀

But right now, I have hit a critical bottleneck: My solo free-tier accounts and service infrastructure limits are completely exhausted. I literally cannot deploy, host, or test the system further on my own without funding, upgraded tiers, or team resources.

Where the project stands right now:

- The Backend: 66 Supabase tables with strict Row-Level Security (RLS) and PostGIS. My son just ran a live cross-border test from Germany, and it worked flawlessly for EU Honey Directive 2024/1438 compliance.

- The UI: Hard-coded 5 new mobile framework screens and successfully configured Google Authentication live.

- Institutional Track: Applications submitted to Inkubator Sežana, LUI, and Technology Park Ljubljana. But while we wait for their months-long bureaucratic evaluations, the technical limits are blocking me today.

I cannot let this project freeze inside my laptop just because of exhausted service limits. I am actively looking for:

  1. A Technical Partner / Co-Founder who understands deep-tech, database scalability, and wants to share the deployment infrastructure.
  2. Backers and Advice on how to upgrade our tiers so I can keep the live terminal running.

Since Reddit filters block links for new accounts, all links to my professional LinkedIn profile and our BuyMeACoffee support page are placed in my Reddit profile bio. You can also ask me directly in the comments, and I will gladly share them!

Thank you for your time, your engineering feedback on our PostGIS structure, and any guidance you can provide!

New Relational Database Indexing

I am releasing a new indexing approach based on some math I have been working on applying relational algebra to business process management (https://github.com/soulstompp/process-modulus) and the only natural proof would be in the database. I was rather amused when it turned out to be an index.

It is actually producing pretty impressive results, particularly with large tables and complex joins. However, I have worked with DBAs for a long time, and they seldom complain that B-tree algorithms are slower than they should be. It’s the disk; everyone is grabby with the disk, and everyone is mad they didn’t get their stuff back as fast as they are certain it should have been.

I have received some great performance results, but the focus is on reading and planning more and scanning less. The results are good, but I am hoping they really help at the point everyone genuinely has to eventually ask something from the disk. So, I haven’t placed a bunch of performance benchmarks, though I did include a benchmark. I documented how I balance the reads and the scans and basically try to leave the disk alone.

The documentation goes into reads vs. scans, which is what is important about how and why the warrendexes work how they do. I want to explain how the index works in simple words so that non-technical people understand my point, because they will likely see it in the financials, even if they miss it.

I hope people download this on their laptops and play around with it and consider what new exciting things they could do (Postgres table inheritance is something you should actually consider now!). I will also want code contribution eventually, but currently I would really like help from DBAs and DevOps folks to understand the system as it actually runs under real workloads.

In alphabetical order:

https://github.com/soulstompp/mysql-warren

https://github.com/soulstompp/pg-warren

Both rely on warren-arrow, which is an arrow format for storing layout formats like the ones used by the warrendexes:

https://github.com/soulstompp/warren-arrow

And then two spelling repos for some SQL changes to prevent some nasty scan repetitions, these should be good to use on any server if you run complex queries:

https://github.com/soulstompp/warren-mysql-speller

https://github.com/soulstompp/warren-pg-speller

Lastly, I did not forget MariaDB, I am just less familiar with the RDBMS and so moving a little slower.

DBA job market – when does hiring usually pick up?

Hi everyone,

For those working in the Oracle DBA space in India, I wanted to understand how the hiring market is looking currently.

Are there usually particular months when DBA hiring increases and more job openings/calls start coming in?

I’m especially interested in knowing whether hiring tends to pick up toward the end of the year or more during the beginning of the next year.

Also, for those who are currently getting calls/interviews, are you seeing more openings for Oracle DBA / Production DBA / Cloud DBA roles?

Any insights based on your recent experience would be really helpful. Thanks!
