This is not the best way to start October, as Chrysanthemum Garden (CG) has announced closure due to cease and desist from Korean publisher, Ridi.
The unfortunate reality is that fan translations have never been legal, they’ve existed in grey areas between different countries and languages. It is always on the decision of the publisher if they chose to remove/DMCA translations.
Our rules have not changed, so the following still apply:
No sharing of pdfs, epubs, or other documents
This is for multiple reasons. The majority of fan translators don’t want or allow their works to be downloaded or shared, and so if it is against their wishes we enforce it. Epubs are also how licensed works are often illegally shared, which breaks Reddit’s TOS. Rather than checking each epub for exceptions, we have a blanket rule against them. We are working on an updated epub rule post.
No sharing of links to illegal websites
We’ve always encouraged Novelupdates (NU) for link sharing, as it works as a “third party” which avoids direct link sharing. While NU has its flaws (the rampant increase of pay-to-read and AI TLs) it is what allows us to operate within Reddit’s TOS. Sharing links to pirate websites is what can get this community removed/shut down by Reddit itself.
Korean Novels – Novelupdates only, no exceptions.
When CG first removed Korean novels from their website, we implemented our own soft ban on Korean novel sharing. In light of this shutdown, it will now be a hard rule: No direct link sharing of Korean novels, only NU links. Posts asking where to read Korean novels will be declined. If it’s not complete or on can’t be found on NU, then, it can’t be shared here. This means we will not allow links to translator websites for Korean novels. This may be subject to change, where we simply don’t allow Korean novels at all, even with NU as we assess the risks.
(we do allow direct-to-translator website links for Chinese/Danmei novels if they do not use NU , but the website must meet community standards/Reddit TOS of being free-to-read and non-AI.)
Post Control – “Where to read translation that was on CG?”
Given the thousands of novels hosted on CG, we can expect a massive influx of these posts. We will be declining posts seeking CG translations. At this time, the news is only hours old. If translators decide to repost elsewhere, it will take some time for them to get up and running, or we face the reality that some translations might just be gone. If there are versions of the translations, without CG there is a higher risk of them being on illegal websites that we can’t allow.
We know that it sucks to have translations disappear mid-read, but given the scale of the situation, we also can’t have hundreds of posts over the coming days or weeks all asking for different novels. We can float the idea of a CG-specific thread, but then comment moderation (see above: link sharing) becomes an issue, so nothing has been established at this time. Please give some time for the dust to settle while things are evolving. The translators were also likely caught off guard.
Post Control – Rants, re-posts, and related topics
Please understand our mod team is only a few people (with real life things like work and school), and we are now dealing with hundreds of comments on the main announcement post alone. Unless there is official statements/updates issued by CG, we won’t be approving multiple posts "announcing" CG shutdown. There is One post approved and pinned for community discussion. (and if epub/link sharing continues to occur, we'll lock it and won't re-approve another one.)
Related-but-generalized posts (“State of translations getting removed”, Publishers/DMCAs) will be approved situationally. If it is a simple rant/vent post, it will not be approved, as it can be discussed in the comments of the announcement. If the post provides insight to translation rights, publication, and other useful information, contains critical thinking, and provides place for constructive conversations, we can consider it for approval.
