Dandadan Season 3 sits at the top of "Top Upcoming animes" on MAL with 147k people on board, and thats without any trailer, without any date, or new info or any advertising so far.
These numbers usually get higher the closer they are to release date, but is even higher than Cyberpunk season 2 which is airing next week i think. I also expected to see JJK season 4 or CSM season 2 much higher, especially the former since it already got a full trailer in June and a lot of advertising, but still way below.
Maybe this doesnt mean much, but also it could bring an estimation of how big Season 3 could be when it airs. I definetly see 2027 being a big year for this series, both with the anime and the manga. I dont know if it could match the same momentum as 2024, but atleast get close.
Without restating the obvious, the fanbase has been pretty split about the future of the series for the past few months. While I see some very fair concerns, like the pacing and long breaks, I’m personally choosing to let Tatsu cook.
I say “choosing to” intentionally.
I’ve noticed recently that it’s harder to enjoy series that force me to wait. Whether it’s manga, books, movies or tv shows, it’s so much easier to find faults and assume the worst of the people in charge. I find myself preparing to be disappointed, so that it won’t hurt as much if the plot falls flat.
But I also think that negative mindset can take away from the joy of reading a story, even one that succeeds. I can become so used to finding faults that it’s difficult to turn it off. By trying to avoid disappointment, I actually create more of it for myself.
So despite the valid concerns of some fans, I’m choosing to be optimistic. Will I be disappointed? Potentially. But I would hate to lessen my enjoyment if Tatsu sticks the landing with this series, especially because it’s brought me so much joy already.
Just my perspective, and I was curious how other people were viewing things moving forward.
In my Kintaira analysis I briefly mentioned how Zuma and Vamola would be a pairing with stronger narrative implications then Kinta and Vamola and I would leave that discussion for another day.
I have decided today is 'another day'
Before I start, no, Im not saying this ship is the only objective ship that could and should happen. Everyone is free to ship away with whoever you want to ship. This is just my own take breaking down why I feel this ship in particular is very very strong.
Anyways, Zuma and Vamola have barely been around each other in the entirety of the manga, and yet, the short bit of interaction they have in both the few manga chaps and the omake already does sooo much justice for setting up the narrative implications and dynamics between the two romantically.
First, explaining some background context for both characters:
Starting with Zuma:
Zuma grew up in a childhood situation where he had no choice but to be the one who looked out for himself and his brother. His dad had died and his mother was so distraught, so he probably felt like he had a lot responsibility to be the man of the house even if he was so smoll.
Zuma therefore became so protective of his little brother Futa, who had this pure, innocent, "protect at all costs" nature to him. His little bro had such an infectious smile; a smile that Zuma would risk his life to protect... But he was too late. And that stuck with him hard.
Then he had the experience with his mom who tried to kill herself and bring him along with him. He ended up surviving but witnessing his own mother get decimated in front of him. The scene was so brutal, so much to the point that later when he encounters a headless dead frog that looks as if it's been brutally ran over, it reminds him of his mom. 🥺
He must have been feeling a lot various conflicting feelings the night she passed. And moving foward as well... The hatred towards his mom for attempting to kill him + abandoning him by himself; the sadness and shock towards losing his mother in such a brutal way; the survivor's guilt for being the only one who survived in his whole family;the solitude of being all alone in such a cruel world; the lack of social awareness because he just wasnt granted the proper time and space like other kids his age would normally get to develop...
From there he became extremely hardened and anarchist from the cruelness of society. He was angry and furious with the circumstances that had befallen him and society's indifference to it as a whole. He wanted to lash out as much as he could, wherever he could.
And yet you'd still catch him dreaming about his family and his lil bro. There was still this soft spot protective spot to him that he still possessed but had no direct outlet to give it towards. By living with Bega, he learned to look past his own perspective. And when he witnessed Bega sacrifice himself to save the kid who was about to drown just like his brother, Zuma stepped up himself.
We also learn later that he channeled his protective nature into the outcasts and rejects of society and the delinquents at his school. He goes out of his way to save and protect other people who need it the most, even willingly jumping into the cursed chest to swap after learning what happened with Daiki.
Later, we see at the climax of the Fairy Tale Card fight that Zuma comes to terms with his feelings about his mother.
He's more empathetic towards her irrational decisions by the end, he understands that everything she did was always based out of love. Even if it got distorted and irrational, she was always trying desperately to protect her family in her own way.
And now Vamola:
Vamola grew up in a childhood situation where she had immediately lost her mom and dad but did have a bond with people who served as maternal figures for her--but they were all forced to look out for themselves since they were actively losing a war against an alien species that was dominating their entire race and planet. Vamola was taught specifically from Banga that 'looking after her own damn self and not giving a shit about anyone else' is what it took to survive the dire mess they were all in.
Despite being in such a dire and depressing situation, Vamola still retained such a pure, innocent "protect at all costs" nature to her. She had an infectious smile; a smile that Banga and the others would risk their lives to protect.
Vamola constantly looked up to Banga as her mother, but Banga would attempt to keep reinforcing the idea of not being able to trust strangers, because trusting strangers is what got their planet into the situation it was currently in.
Banga initially wanted to just try to sneak off the planet asap, but it was Vamola who had this inner naive righteousness that demanded that they should try to save the men who were shackled up as fast as possible (it was Banga's idea, but Vamola rushed in).
The save attempt goes wrong, and it leads to everyone being more cornered than they were before. Banga ends up saving Vamola and giving a energizing speech about getting angry and furious because of the circumstances that have befallen them.To lash out as much as they can with whatever they can.
Later, when they finally make it to the warp area, Banga is the one who throws Vamola inside to go through herself. Vamola is initiallyshocked and confused about this. Banga was ready to make the ultimate sacrifice in order for Vamola to continue on. And so, Vamola ends up on earth.
Vamola must have been feeling various conflicting emotions that night and moving forward... The confusion of why Banga chose to sacrifice herself when Banga herself had said she wanted to live the situation and wasn't afraid of making sacrifices to do so; The confusion towards being abandoned so abruptly;the survivor's guilt of being the only one of her new-found family and entire race to make it out alive (to her knowledge); the solitude of being all alone in a brand new world; the lack of social awareness because she just wasnt granted the proper time and space like other kids his age would normally get to develop...
From there she tried desperately to fulfill the last words Banga had told her. Fortunately, she was able to find a new family but then the Kur attacks once again. She gathers up the last bit of her courage to face those scary monsters again and sacrifice herself so her new found-family can live even a little bit longer, just like Banga did for her. Fortunately, things play out better this time and everyone is able to live and move on together.
As you can see,
there's quite a bit of interesting parallels and similarities here and there with the way their narratives were handled:
Both lost their entire families.
Both moms were prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for their kid (though Banga's sacrifice was a lot more rational than Zuma's mom's obviously).
Both have a found-family figure that took them in that they could later consider a truly loved parent. Also Bega... Banga.... cmon now.
Both must have initially felt major conflicting emotions when they were abandoned by their moms, but both still came to understood that they weredefinitely loved by them at some point later.
Both were dropped off into a world of solitude and had to fend for themselves. Both weren't granted time to develop social awareness regularly as their peers did.
Both have the inner righteous nature to look out for others, but one is a bit more naive with it compared to the other.
They both have a more-than-meets-the-eye inversion: Zuma at first glance looks like a scary punk delinquent, but the truth is that he has a soft, kind-hearted side that wants to protect the ones who need it the most. Vamola at first glance looks like a cute innocent alien girl, but she can transform into a giant kick-ass Kaiju that can do some very destructive feats.
But, why would they make for a good pairing?
They just fit each other like puzzle pieces. They both have traces of the bond they treasured the most in the past but were forced to part with.
Zuma has an innate cynical, protective nature just like Banga had for Vamola. Vamola has an innate naive, innocent nature just like Futa had with Zuma.
Zuma wasn't able to protect his little brother's pure smile, but with Vamola, who has just as much as a pure smile and nature-- it'd be like his second chance to make sure that smile never fades away ever again.
Artist is LowSalaryAlien
Vamola wasn't strong enough to attempt her initial plan to save the men on her planet. To her, it could almost feel like she was the one caused things to go the way they did and therefore caused Banga to not be able to escape with her. But now she could have found someone who also puts up a gruff exterior but actually has a soft side to them that they don't normally show, just like Banga did for her, and this time she is strong and won't let that person go off and sacrifice himself for her or for anyone else.
Also, Vamola was told to find someone strong. Zuma has been both physically and mentally strong his whole life, because he had no other choice with the way he grew up. Even in this current amusement park arc, he's rushing into battle with ZERO powers. And when he gets his powers back, he'll be insanely strong once again.
And not just that, but Banga specifically said strong ANDkind.
Zuma is one of the most kindest characters in this manga. His gang respects him so much because of how far he goes to save others.
Also, out of all the characters in the manga, Zuma was the ONLY character to have ever get a different emotion out of Vamola with her being angry at him, and Zuma was completely caught off guard by her actions.
Momo seemed like a pretty gnarly girl to him but he could still keep up with her. However, Vamola just keeps him on his toes lol. They also both share having a blunt straight forward nature. That could make for some interesting, fun, and cute dynamics with the way they are characterized.
If only he wasn't blind and could see how bright and innocent her smile was 🥺
And finally, they would be able to relate to each other's backstories and situation on a level no other character in the manga could do with each other.
They both know what losing their entire family and being abandoned to a world to fend for themselves felt like, they both know what it feels like to find a maternal or paternal comfort from someone who isn't blood related, they both would respect the type of people they held so close in the past because of how similar they are, they both have really big hearts despite the tragic, tragic scenarios they were forced to endure.
But Muh Nanozilla
Just as I said in my Kintaira post, Vamola and Kinta isn't a bad pairing, but narratively, it's the same sort of easy route as Aira getting with Okarun.
Kinta paired up with Vamola wouldn't challenge Kinta to grow past his current self. Vamola is straight forward, very impressionable and not fully understanding of Earthly teenage social cues quite yet. Vamola seems like she'd be down for the ride for pretty much anything out of pure curiosity. She mimics other people alot, namely Kinta and Jiji. This would be ideal for Kinta if he stayed a static character who refused to grow and change his ways (which I'll be honest is very likely fr).
But if Tatsu was to have Kinta experience a full character arc that had him actually grow, similar to how Aira actually grew in her full character arc, then Vamola wouldn't be the one to achieve that growth for him.
Moreover, Vamola would be the safe easy route normally but there's also the possibility that Vamola isnt written to be a static character in the future and that she matures more and more and has a better grasp of social cues and interactions then suddenly the easy lane Kinta had gotten so used to could crumble and he wouldn't even know why... (which admittedly could actually trigger the change for growth from Kinta too im ngl)
So when and why would this ship start sailing?
Im ngl to you, I have 0 clue lmao.
Unless Zuma has some sorta narrative reason to stick around further with the group, then he wouldn't really have much reason to stick around the main gang since he goes to a different school and has his own found-family that he has developed with the gang he runs... So therefore the moments necessary to interact to build the romance wouldnt be an easy thing to have happen very often since it's not like they would be in proximity of each other frequently. But then again, it really comes down to however it gets written.
I mean, just with the short interaction they've had already there's already enough to feed families with this ship. So yeah, anything is possible I suppose.
But my main point is that all the narrative implications are already there. If it ever is setup to start, then it already can just write itself tbh.
Reading a Brett Whiteley (famous Australian artist) coffee table book and who's looking back but the mad shredder from Hayasii! Always thought he was the odd one out of the band design wise
A lot people here read dandadan mainly for the romance and hates amnesia because it stunted the progression of momokarun. Essentially, this caused a lot of fans wanting to see more of momokarun moments together and hope they get official before it ends. However, the romance of the main ship usually gets barely any focus and gets put into the background once the couple becomes official. To all those hoping for more momokarun moments after this due to amnesia, it might not happen.
This is what i think but what about you ? Do you think we will have more romance moments of them after they get together assuming it doesnt end when momokarun becomes official.
Does this mean that they, in a way, knowingly injected Zuma, Rin, and Kouki with yokai powers? I guess Kouki was shown, but for the other two, I just realized we never got an explanation, right? I guess Zuma got his after his brother passed, but there was no explanation for Rin. Please correct me if I'm wrong; it's been a while
Does anybody feel lately that the story's main antagonist is weak? Don't get me wrong, Saint Germain is a mysterious character, and the fights are fine but I feel like at this point he hasn't acted enough to give enough tension for the main characters. Every week I read just feels like I'm passing by to see what other fight is being thrown our way. Also I feel like this current arc has been dragging out for a min especially with all these factions that we are suddenly introduced and this long amnesia plot. Idk if I'm the only one who feels this way but what do you guys think?
I read the last chapter of the manga recently, although okarun hasn’t appeared for a few chapters, I’m reviewing the first season of the anime and I can’t help but notice how weak and “cowardly” Okarun is
At first I even understand the situation, given the character he was created to be
But even after several situations beyond strange and with real danger of something, he does not evolve
Not even the smart nerd stereotype he fulfills, since momo usually assumes the most creative and brilliant ideas
Grandma turno keeps saying that her power is beyond strong and I only see okarun living on hyperbole and fallacies, only doing something when it’s a very key moment or to be “badass”
I really had no idea; my jaw dropped when I found out. That episode clearly showcases the artistic freedom that is the studio's trademark. It only deepened my fondness for the studio, since I love *Adventure Time*. Did you guys know about this?
