I love Kara just tearing through a perfectly good top instead of taking it off or just wearing something with buttons like Clark :p

u/Crawkward3 Nightwing Aug 29 '26
Yeah Steph does not have the money to be doing that
46
u/KTR1988 Batgirl (Stephanie) Aug 30 '26
I love how excited Steph was when she all of a sudden had access to all these new gadgets as a member of Batman Incorporated since she was always perpetually broke and shooed away by the Bat Family in the past.

One issue of Super Sons has Jon carefully unbuttoning his shirt while Damian exasperatedly waits.

With as music-video style fetishy as that specific act is, it's surprising how much restraint editorial uses, not having the ladies of Marvel and DC rip and tear their shirts to pieces at the drop of a hat. I can think of at least two characters for whom that DEFINITELY feels like an in-character move, and the recent Superboy Prime arc definitely parodies "ripping a shirt apart as cheesecake" despite it not actually being all that common of a thing.
Then again, for as tame as it technically is, I remember Supergirl's first costume reveal on Superman the Animated Series feeling extremely exhibitionistic and suggestive, even as a kid. I wonder if that may have led to some sort of internal "no overtly sexualizing the shirt rip or the characters' superpowers" rule, because you know damn well Bruce Timm knew what he was doing. (He's Bruce Timm, after all.)

u/Flaky-Ninja2398 Aug 29 '26
I guess She-Hulk has that territory covered :p
Also straight men are weird about admitting they like strong women so it makes sense but is disappointing for us buff girl enjoyers

u/Bears_On_Stilts Aug 30 '26
I’ve seen it called “the Buffy rule:” aggressive physical combat and traditionally masculine sexual assertiveness can only be given to the most conventionally feminine of female characters. The outliers are people like She-Hulk where it’s humorous, or Barda where it’s somewhat openly fetishistic.

Man, that is SUCH a Wayne judgemental look.

u/Super0411 Supergirl Aug 29 '26
Every Bat family member has to master this look before they can have a Super/Bat team up
13
u/HotClock4632 Aug 29 '26
I think it's so mandatory for any batfam member to team up with a super. They just gotta give em the look Every time when they do this. Lol

u/Super0411 Supergirl Aug 29 '26
Same
Stephanie is awesome, Stephanie and Kara together is even better.
24
u/LaVerdadYaNiSe Aug 29 '26
Same. It was such a nice exploration of Steph as a character, and of Gotham as more than just 'that place where the sun literally doesn't show'.

Nope, she's Batgirl here. 😜
2
u/LCPhotowerx Superman Aug 30 '26
that honestly would have made it better. Imagine her saying that with Babs on radio saying "thats not you anymore!!" and Steph replying "d'oh! right, right!"

The editorial really hated the idea of a Stephanie getting over with fans as Batgirl.
Scratch that: they get really upset if it’s not Babs at the forefront.
12
u/KTR1988 Batgirl (Stephanie) Aug 30 '26
It was so bizarre how they wouldn't let anyone do anything with Steph or Cass immediately after The New 52 launched, even if it was an Elseworlds story. They were really pushing their streamlined, Silver Age adjacent DC Universe hard.

u/Slow-Chemical1991 Green Lantern Corps Aug 30 '26 edited Aug 30 '26
I will never forget how the writer of Stephgirl, Bryan Q. Miller, tried to cheer up the fans in the wake of the New 52... by saying that Steph would be Nightwing... in the Smallville Comics... and then the editorial walked back on that and made Babs Nightwing instead.
The DiDio era was so terrible because he really did not have much respect for the post-Crisis world of DC Comics.

They were really pushing their streamlined, Silver Age adjacent DC Universe hard.
Except when they weren't. There was no rhyme or reason to the stuff that didn't work as a reboot besides GL and Batman making lots of money and Didio picking the parts of those he liked.

Bruce : Supergirl mentioned it to me. What do you think!?
Stephanie: Oh Bruce! It's such a thoughtful...weirdly perfectly sized, birthday present...

I think Damian is mistaken. She's not stuffing her costume, she mentioned a wearing a push-up bra a few issues earlier.

u/X-Geek Aug 30 '26
At the next meeting of the Bat family
Batman: "Why is nobody wearing the Bat-Bras(TM) I ordered!"

If Bruce had boobs, I promise he would've had a bat-bra.
Also DC please give us a new Steph solo ongoing 🙏

2000s Supergirl sure was a weird time for the character in her characterization
23
u/No-Mechanic-2558 Aug 29 '26
No this was when She was normal again, it's the Joe Kelly run that has the weird jailbait shit
10
u/Flaky-Ninja2398 Aug 29 '26
I mean, she was naked her entire arrival to earth so they started pretty weird
11
u/No-Mechanic-2558 Aug 29 '26
Yeah that's what I meant with the jailbait shit. She started acting normal once the direction of the character was changed
2
1
u/Cyberslasher Aug 29 '26
I mean... "Normal" is a spectrum here
She was still super horny for basically whatever bat she could find.
Nightwing basically was unwilling to be alone in a room with her anymore at this point.
1
u/No-Mechanic-2558 Aug 29 '26
What ? What the hell are you talking about
4
u/Cyberslasher Aug 29 '26 edited Aug 29 '26
Mid 2000s Kara was extremely aggressive about her crush on nightwing
She also had this whole thing where she enjoyed making captain boomerang suffer because he was attracted to her and she was 16.
3
u/No-Mechanic-2558 Aug 29 '26
Yes I'm awear of it, I'm saying that at one point they stopped writing her like that and retconned this weird behavior with saying that she got kryptonite poisoning
0
u/Cyberslasher Aug 29 '26
But the whole "nightwing wouldn't be alone in a room with her" carried past the Kelly run, which you had marked as when she "became normal"
In fact, this very post was well after Kelly (this was in 2010) and she's trying to look at Steph's bra.

None of that's canon now, thank goodness. Because she wouldn't have been a teenager any more (due to pre-Crisis continuity being restored for her) almost all civilian scenes from 2005 when she was rebooted through to the cancellation of her Rebirth book would've played out very differently. The fights might be canon still, but not her having multiple civilian names (Kara Danvers was only settled on in Rebirth, she uses Linda for people who knew her pre-Crisis and don't know she's Supergirl) or going to school.

It was canonically necessary to show her panties 😐🫠 gee DC, thanks for being normal about female characters
10
u/No-Mechanic-2558 Aug 29 '26
It makes It easier for the readers. You'll be surprised to how many unnecessary panty shots we had during this time
7
u/Super0411 Supergirl Aug 29 '26
It gets even better when you find out that she was just 16-17 years old during all of them...

u/Digifiend84 Manchester Black Aug 30 '26
That's now retconned. She'd have been in her early 20s now due to being that age when she died in Crisis, as her reboot has been retconned to being a resurrection via Darkseid.

Yes! I hate how sexualized Dick is. I hate how people only seem to care about his ass and him being pretty —but mostly his ass— when he's such a wonderful character, one of the most relatable and humane characters.
I love my boy and can't stand how DC runs with the "big ass" joke to the point they've had him be assaulted and even raped
1
u/alfred725 Aug 30 '26
I tried reading new52 nightwing and it wasn't great. I don't know if it was new52 being bad in general or just Nightwing. But Dick is such a good character in like everything else I've seen him in

Also, Kara probably wouldn't tear her clothes as often as she does in comics. She's not a multimillionaire and probably actually likes the clothes she owns.

I’m guessing she wants that Bat-Pussy. Hard to compete with that as a man.

u/Cybron2099 Aug 30 '26
Now the important question she needs to ask next, is if she has a bat shaped bush. 🤣

u/Grouchy_Figure_5688 Aug 30 '26
I keep forgetting just how depressed everyone from the Batfamily looks when put side to side anyone else.
