This is a C2C blanket using a pattern by Hooked by Robin, and I absolutely recommend it to anyone who wants to try corner-to-corner crochet for the first time. The pattern was easy to follow, worked up quickly, (took me about six evening to get this far) and was a lot of fun to make. I did six rows of Unicorn Mane and to break the colors up further I used 2 rows of Loops and Threads in soft classic in mustard. I’m just waiting on a deep teal yarn I ordered to do the border.
Now, about the yarn! Please know that I mean no disrespect to anyone who loves Red Heart Super Saver. I know it has a loyal following, and for good reason. It’s sturdy, durable, relatively inexpensive, and you get a lot of yarn for your money. I’ve also heard from many people that it softens considerably after a few washes.
A few months ago, I was browsing yarn online when I came across Red Heart Super Saver Bitty Stripes in Unicorn Mane and Rainbow. The colors caught my eye, and I loved them so much that I ordered eight skeins of each colorway.
Unfortunately, when the yarn arrived, the colors were much darker than I had expected. There were also lots of little sections of undyed white yarn scattered throughout the color changes, seemingly at random. 🤷🏻♀️ It wasn’t quite the look I had envisioned from the pictures online.
I also find Red Heart Super Saver pretty rough on my hands while working with it. That’s just my personal experience with the texture which I have an issue with, but after using it, I understand why so many crocheters appreciate its durability and affordability.
I had always intended for this blanket to be a donation rather than something for my own home, so I’m happy to add it to my growing collection of handmade items for our local hospital and homeless shelter. I’m currently making hats and scarves, too, and I hope these projects will bring a little extra warmth and comfort to someone who needs them.
I’d love to hear what others think of the Bitty Stripes colorways! Have you worked with Unicorn Mane or Rainbow? Did the colors look different in person, and did you find that the yarn softened after washing?
