Mod Post Regarding Instagram / Petco animal neglect posts

Hi all, this is something that I didn't really want to discuss, but after the last 24 hours, I think it's finally time to address this. As of now, under Rule 7 (no spam or low effort posts), any posts that showcase screenshots from social media showing animal abuse, or pictures taken from inside pet stores (chain or not), will be removed as they offer absolutely no productive discussion value, and only exist to fuel hatred.

Instagram posts that show neglect of crested geckos (or other animals) have no place on this forum under any circumstance. The posts are always showing animals in distress, getting hurt or being intentionally antagonized for views. People come to this forum to get away from those sorts of things, not to be subjected further to it, and ultimately, our forum is for educating on proper and advanced husbandry and to help others out.

The mod team has seen especially in the last 24 hours that people are willing to condemn entire ethnic groups for how they keep animals a certain way. At the end of the day, that's racism, and myself and my team are not prepared to let this happen under our watch. Please understand that different countries have different cultures, and that includes husbandry practices for lots of different types of animals - you may not understand why or appreciate this, but encouraging mobs to mass report profiles and posting xenophobic comments is not what this community stands for. Please be better.

If you find disturbing content online, please do not post it here, report it to the relevant people on the platform it came from. The same goes for animals that are photographed in petstores like Petco, PetSmart, PetsAtHome, wherever. Unfortunately, this type of care is something that we know occurs, but we also know this is something that is out of our control. Talk to store managers, send reports to social media teams, but please do not bring it here where people are trying to avoid animal abuse.

If you have a genuine concern for an animal in distress, please report it to the appropriate authority if possible, and give as much detail as you can.

Any questions, please send myself or the modmail a message.

Cheers.

She's literally buried half of her body in the substrate

Edit: it was an egg, I literally watched it being produced, never seen that before!

Seeking advice!

I’m a first time crestie owner and have done a lot of research but am feeling a little confused. I got this little guy over the weekend at NARBC, he just caught my eye and I couldn’t say no. Seller was quite busy and wasn’t able to tell me exactly how old he is but said a 10 gal enclosure would be good. I didn’t realize just how tiny he is compared to other pictures i see of baby geckos. He is about 8 cm long from nose to tail and my kitchen scale doesn’t even register his weight in grams; not sure if this is an issue with the scale or if he’s really that tiny. I’ve been feeding him basic crestie food but have a few flavors of pangea coming in the mail because he has barely eaten. My questions are:
Would anyone be able to estimate how old he is?
Should I change his enclosure size/put paper towel on the bottom instead of substrate?
Any advice is much appreciated. He seems to enjoy being held and is quite docile, often jumping into my hand if im moving something in the enclosure, but I don’t want to overhandle him if that’s a thing for little baby geckos. Side note, could anyone identify what morph he is? Just curious.
I want to make sure I am doing everything I can to keep him comfortable and happy.

Edit: thanks for the advice all! The pangea came in the mail and he ate some off my finger yay <3

Two of our Gecko's Passed Within Week of One Another. Illness?

As the title says, sadly, my girlfriend's Leechie gecko passed last week on Saturday. Today, I looked in my one-year-old crestie's tank and found her lifeless at the bottom of the tank, slightly curled body and with sunken eyes (like my gf's gecko). We fed them pangea every day, kept the heat at a proper temperature (usually around 76 degrees for my crestie), gave them the proper space and hiding spots, and made sure they were properly eating and using the restroom. I never spotted any glaring issues with either of them prior, other than my crestie being unusually fired down a lot in the last 4-5 months and maybe a little bit less active when in and out of her tank, compared to when I first got her. I'm just not sure what to think right now and I have no idea what to do other than quarantine my living gecko's tank to prevent her from getting a possible illness and spending a lot more money than i'd like to get a necropsy and vet visit for the survivor (and potentially my other snakes/lizards too since everyone's in the same room). I of course am gonna take any vets advice over reddit. I just wanted to come in here to see if anyone else has experienced something like this. Neither looked impacted, like they had eggs that were stuck, neither looked prolapsed, i didn't see any mites or worms on them or in their stool, and neither looked like they were scratched or had broken bones. Is it reasonable to assume this is an invisible disease that may spread to the rest of my reptiles? I included photos of them from not too long ago. Rest peacefully Bug and Power.

She’s been staying like this for 3 days and I never see her moving around, even at night
I have her for 2 weeks not and she lately started eating when I take her out and hand feed her with a spoon
She also pooped so I think she should be healthy 🤔

Taking her to the vet for the first time. any advice?

Post image
10 Upvotes

i rescued my girl back in march in a rehoming situation. she was taken great care of before hand and fully healthy, so I have held off on a vet. I’m taking her for the first time next week for a check up / wellness visit because i noticed her poops being less solid the last few days.

i haven’t been able to handle her in a while because she’s always hiding during the day and i don’t want to scare her or force her to do anything she doesn’t want to do. since she’s in the same spot each morning, im just planning on gently picking her up and putting her in her carrier. i’ll have a little hide and leaves for her and it’ll be laid with paper towel.

i’m just worried about her being scared from the traveling and inspection :( i know all geckos are different, but any advice on how past visits for you guys went would be greatly appreciated!

Mold in bioactive tank

Post image
4 Upvotes

We recently built a bioactive tank for our new crestie 2 weeks ago.

We put in some isopods and springtails as our “clean up” crew.

After getting our gecko last week, we started to do our daily routine of feeding him paste in cups and some crickets covered in the calcium powder we got from our local vivarium.

This morning, we noticed that there are patches of fuzzy white stuff (mold?) growing on the floor of the tank.

Any thoughts on what is causing this and what we can do about it? This is our first ever bioactive tank and reptile. So we appreciate all advice!

We keep the tank at 70 degrees F on the tank floor and our heat lamp keeps the upper area around 82 degrees F.

my crestie has been hiding at night for the past 2 or 3 nights and im not sure why. the temperature and humidity is good, she has hides and foliage, shes eating and drinking fine. she has just been sitting in her coconut and i cant get her out to have a look at her. is this a normal thing that they do? im a fairly new owner, she is a rescue and ive had her for 3 months but ive never noticed her do this before.

Advice

Hello, I’m new to owning a crestie I’ve had Lady for close to 2 weeks. I’m using a bioactive in closure pictured above (I also added some lounging ledges on the empty spaces on the glass) but when I did my research (I set her tank up month and half in advice) majority of articles, forums, etc. had said 18x18x24 but now I’ve been seeing it’s 18x18x36 which has been worrying me slightly. She seems very happy in her enclosure; she sleeps at the highest point during the day, watching all the activity then at night she’s active and will explore. Also, I would like to add she hasn’t ate yet. My question is; am I not giving her an adequate environment since now I’m learning she’s living in the minimum for an adult? (She’s 3 years old) and if I am how long would I be able to keep her in this enclosure till it’s needed to give her more space? I know some might say do it immediately but it was expensive and long process to set up her tank and I also do not want to overly stress her out once she finally is used to this one. Sorry for the long rant just wanted all the background info included. So, please some advice or at least reassurance she is okay will help! Ty!

Recommended Heat Lamp?

Hello everyone, I am preparing to get my first crested gecko, but before I do I am setting up the bioactive enclosure first. The one thing I’m stuck on is the heat lamp I should get, which I know aren’t normally necessary, but my room is in the basement so it’s always cold (65-68 F) and even colder in the winter. So I was just wondering what heat light I should get to slightly raise the temperature to that sweet spot of 72-78 F?

Upgraded to a 2x2x4!

This is Samwise! I rescued him a bit ago and he came in a 20g vertical tank. I finally was able to upgrade him to a nice big mansion!

He was extremely friendly when I first got him, always wanting to come up onto my hands, but suddenly his behavior changed and he was extremely skiddish and tweaked out every time I went in his enclosure. According to the previous owner, he was in that enclosure for about 2 years. Finally was able to afford to get him out of there and upgrade him to this huge 2x2x4’ mansion :)) I hope his behavior goes back to what it was before now that he has way more space.

REALLY weird feeding response

I just gave my boy some of this, I usually give pangea but heard good reviews about this. I have him a spoon to lick off of and after taking a few bites, he starts making sounds I've never heard, like, squeaky growl sounds, opening his mouth like crazy and waving his tail steadily. I have NEVER seen him do this. He's the most chill guy. It freaked me out. Anyone have a similar experience or know what happened? Only new thing was this food. Not doing that again.

Sleeping near ground/burying

The past few weeks my 6 yr old male has been either near the bottom of the tank or burying himself during the day, and I have no idea why. I have tried making it more humid, hotter, colder, nothing seems to change it. Any ideas?

My brother was playing too hard with my gecko, how do I get my gecko to like him again?

• Upvotes

Apparently my autistic brother was going into my bedroom and playing with my gecko to hard while I was at work. He would hold the gecko tightly (not like hurt tight just can’t get away tight) in his hands and boop its nose repeatedly until it would repeatedly bite at the air or hold its mouth open or tease it to bite him by opening the glass slightly and waiving his fingers at the gecko. This has been going on for months now, he believes he was playing with the gecko by doing this because the dog plays by opening its mouth at its toys, I don’t believe he had any malicious intent he is a very sweet boy.

Either way, he wants to have a relationship with the gecko, I think he should too. I say it’s okay as long as I show him how to be nice and he only handles the gecko while I’m there. However the gecko refuses and won’t stop biting him even while I’m there and watching him treat the gecko nicely, I believe he just recognizes his face. My gecko isn’t biting me at all and almost never does, just him.

How do I get the gecko to not hate my brother?

We have tried choice based handling, sitting and talking by the tank for long periods of time, him feeding the gecko crickets, and only handling for 5 minutes at a time. We’ve been trying to get the gecko to like my brother for about two months now, absolutely no change in behavior. I also for sure know he’s not messing with the gecko anymore because I started locking my bedroom door while I’m gone and I have a enclosure camera now

When to Start Live Feeders?

Have a lil baby crested, recently turned a year old and is only 5gs. Is fed on a powder CGD. Wondering when to start live feeders. Is it okay to feed pinhead crickets following general guideline of being no large than space between eyes?

Not my first gecko, but my first baby! Thanks for any advice :)

24x18x36 bioactive enclosure

I don’t have a crestie yet but I’m building a 24x18x36 bioactive enclosure for one. Any thoughts on lessons learned from your builds? I am in the early phases of the build and have cork bark, substrate, thermometer/hygrometer, and grow light for future plants. Anything that is must have now or can save up for later on down the line? Any best practices/advice would be appreciated

How does this look? Most of the plants on the bottom are real and in the left in the back is a cork bark hide and isopods! I have some stuff coming in for the side walls.
