Sunday’s bizarre ending masks the real problem
We can’t play good defense in the second half.
Philly- not a blown lead, we should have tied (thanks Stephon) at 10 minutes but Philly went on a 6 minute drive that ended in a TD. We could have tied but didn’t execute the 2 point conversion.
Dallas - goal to go at the end of the half, 3 passes and then Daniels is injured; down by 7 with Mariota instead of 4 with JD5. Defense gives up 20 second half points
Seahawks- give up 21 second half points, squeak out a win.
Colts - Bizarre 4th down call with 3rd string QB and 4th string RB, give up 20 second half points
Giants, give up 24 second half points including 14 in the 4th quarter.
Philly is the only team we’ve held under 20 points in the second half.
I don’t have the stats at hand from last year, however I do remember a few games at least (like KC) where we were close in the first half but got blown out the second half.
This is really what I think gets DQ fired, and it’s a pattern that goes back to his days in ATL

u/mandoslorians WHAT WOULD JAYSUS DO? 17h ago
i feel like part of it is bc our offense couldn’t stay on the field so they were getting gassed and stuff but for some reason we let up but idek

...and part of that was Bill inexplicably getting no carries the final 14:20 of game time. He was averaging over 8 yards a carry up to that point. The whole point of the new OC was to line up under center more and to run the ball more effectively with our RBs. I don't understand why we abandoned that with Bill Sunday.

yeah i don’t understand that. there are a lot of things about the game i don’t get

I think this mightve been the case against the Colts, but not the Giants. Against the Giants, the second half drives went: NYG FG, WAS TD, NYG TD, WAS TD, NYG TD, WAS punt, NYG TD. The D had plenty of breaks except for that last 3 and out.

It was their formations and coverage in the second half, 7 man front, man coverage as if they thought the Giants would run rely heavy on the run game in the second half, dumb

u/Agreeable_Wear_5233 16h ago
and calling that cover zero back to back to back despite getting smoked on it repeatedly. The 4th down TD to likely was egregious. No DBs in front of the first down marker on a 4th and 8.

Positive spin, we have shown to play good defense. If our first half defense can carry over to the second half then this team might actually win a bunch of games.
Compared to last year where the defense had no hope.
I just seems that they can’t adjust when offenses adjust to us.

it’s week 6 and they still haven’t made the adjustments on defense to not collapse in the second half?
There is little to no positive spin on DQ’s coaching pattern.

2 brand new coordinators. Never mind, you are right, no hope that the coordinators can improve because DQ is the HC.
I guess DQ was drunk in 2024 when the team was winning as much as it was. Only possible explanation.

who brought in the first year coordinators…..? AFTER firing his previous two coordinators he hired?

u/trex8599 14h ago
I guess you had a mic drop moment there didn’t you. While I do blame DQ for this and I do expect the team to continue to lose games, I wouldn’t be surprised if we start to win after the bye week because they are healthy and the coordinators become better with the more experience they gain.
This defense has shown flashes of being good, far more than any time the last 3 years.

the defense plays well the first half only to collapse and give up more than 20 points the second half which has a strong correlation to our 1-3-1 record. if that somehow is acceptable to you, idk what else to say.
but go ahead and screen shot this and come back to me on thanksgiving to “mic drop” on me over our red hot win streak into the playoffs.

That is the point I’m trying to make. The defense is playing great in the first half then collapses in the second half. That collapse is not acceptable and the team will not win many, or even a single game this season with that.
However, if they do fix that issue with the defense because these coordinators gain experience and actually improve, then they will be good.
But that is a big if because I do agree with you, they haven’t, especially under DQ the past year and half to actually adjust and get better.
However, I haven’t seen the defense play as well as they have in the first half of games.
The offense is also starting fast, they sputter at times during the game, but still score when they need to.
God, if this team could just put it all together with some of the young talent we have, they could be very competitive. I

at the end of the day, i’m like you or any other fan of this team. I want to win. I want to see this team win. But i’ve accepted we won’t win with DQ and he needs to go. He’s shown too many patterns over the years even before coming to Washington he’s just not a good HC.

He's a defensive coach and the defense has been horrible his entire time here. This is exactly what happened with Rivera.
He's also a moron who does not understand how the NFL clock works or what the OT rules are.
He should be fired today.

u/zainz24 17h ago
Yeah he's the same as Rivera..great observation....

u/No_Cell_8567 16h ago
His defenses are terrible just like Rivera's were, and both are former DCs. So yes in that way they are the same.
Also Quinn is a moron who should be fired today.

This is the issue with everyone in this sub. Everything is terrible or amazing.
Are they really terrible? Are they bottom 5 in all categories? Enlighten me.

we are bottom 9 in all categories except run defense (8th in run defense). we are bottom 5 in passing yards, points and Red-zone TDs allowed (29, 30, and 32nd respectively).
Yes they are really terrible on defense.

u/No_Cell_8567 16h ago
They can't hold a 14 point lead and made Crab Legs look like Tom Brady.
The defense is terrible.
The HC Stood on sidelines slack jawed for 55 seconds as time ran off the clock, forgetting you need to actually kick the FG to win the game
The coaching is terrible.
Not sure what to tell ya.

I feel like "defensive mind" has morphed into a cop-out for careerist coaches who suck and want to always have the out that the other team would've scored more if it weren't for their amazing scheme.

u/Latinvictory 17h ago
This all falls on coaching and motivation to finish strong. We have to close the deal better!

u/caddyncells 16h ago
Offense not sustaining longer drives coupled with blitz heavy 1st half D means 2nd half D personnel is tired.
1
u/DecentBug3454 16h ago
So do we feel like this is an offense problem (gets figured out) or a defense problem (too aggressive early). Or should we just chalk it up to coordinator growing pains for now?

u/sinofmercy Fuck Dan Snyder 16h ago
Giants also started heavy blitzing later in the game as well, which we seemed to counter with... More drop backs. Several drives stalled because they lost a down due to pressure. That's when the offense should be calling quick passes or screens but they weren't consistent with it.

u/8teamparlay So sayeth Brunell_the_GOAT 12h ago
They blitz heavy every play and it worked almost every time

u/Mad_Pupil_9 I are a punt returner 15h ago
It’s both an offensive problem and a defensive depth problem. Particularly since playing defense is more tiring than offense since you’re reacting to what the opposing offense is doing.
Since we’re rebuilding, we lack the depth to truly rotate players during series to keep the starters fresh late game.

I’ll be controversial and say that Jayden is not as good as Marcus as in getting the team up to line and getting plays off smoothly.

He was afraid if they missed the FG that Jameis would move them into FG range in one play. Hes a bum coach.

u/Savings_Writing_2586 14h ago
Nah the real problem is our coach or quarterback or OC are partially retarded. Perhaps all 3, would know more if we had full audio from last minute of OT.
Our defense not being great is a known commodity

u/VADALESS 17h ago
The real problem is that we are not a good team.

Not sure why you got downvoted. We are not a good team. Too many gaps and holes in key places. Hell, we don’t even trust our kicker to win a game from 40 yards out.
We have delusional fans in this subreddit.

u/maybeitsjustnerves 17h ago
Yep I’ve been saying this all along. The first half, the defense holds up pretty well. The second half is a straight up collapse.
