Could Kwan have scored in the seventh?

Had to step away during the seventh inning last night, had Hammy on radio but did not see it. Could Kwan have tried to score from first on DeLauter’s double to right? With two outs presumably Kwan was running and with decent speed should he have been sent home instead of held at third? If he had anything close to a 50-50 chance of making it, wasn’t that better than relying on Adell to drive him in? Sure Adell has had a few big hits but as he often does, he wound up striking out to end the inning and our last good chance to score. Curious what those who saw the play think. (Is Joel Skinner still coaching third? lol)

That right fielder has a cannon

Was about to comment the same. He had a throw in Game 1 where I said wow as soon as it left his hand,

The ball that Lowe hit down the line that off the bat you would assume double but combine Lowe’s speed with that arm and he’s out by 15 feet

Oh yeah that was the one. He would been out like Austin Wells going to third and then some.

It also feels like that foul boundary wall was purposely designed to kick the ball directly out to the fielder. There were multiple hits down the first base line that I feel like would have been a standing double or possibly a triple in a different ball park where the wall just goes straight back.

Thought the same. It was more so the bounce directly at him, he didn’t do anything special. Made a good throw but Lowe wasn’t even trying to stretch it at that point

No, he would not have made it (imo.) I watched the replay twice. He was about half way to 3rd when the RF got to the ball.

If it was a bad throw/relay, maybe. If it was a good throw/relay, he's out by 10 feet. You generally don't take that chance.

I think one of the commentators mentioning the fielders getting the relay in quick, holding Kwan at third.

When the ball was hit, I thought it would score two for sure, so I was confused how Kwan didn't round third. When they showed the replay, the ball was gathered and thrown in pretty quickly, so it seemed reasonable that he didn't go. Looking back, it's hard to swallow not even giving it a shot.

In a one run game maybe you take the chance to try to tie it. But you would have still needed another hit to score Chase and then Kwan scores anyway. No point in pushing it.

This is exactly it, yes it means a solo homer ties it in the 8th or 9th. But you can't run yourself out of the inning there.

Since it was Adell, I would’ve been tempted to risk it, cuz I felt like he wasn’t gonna hit there 😂. But it’s probably not the right move lol

Appreciate the comments, seems the consensus is that Kwan likely would have been out. In a way I feel a little better about Kwan stopping at third. It’s just that Skinner holding Lofton at third years ago still gives me nightmares. Those of you old enough to remember that play will understand.

Lofton was MUCH fast than Steven Kwan (still might be)

I'm not sure if I'm more upset with Skinner or Casey Blake for that whole situation whenever it crosses my mind

Definitely would've got the ball there well before Kwan did... You'd be relying on a largly inaccurate throw for him to score.

Adell coming up against a lefty is the last time you’re risking that. Jo just couldn’t come through this time, but that spot is all we can ask for. No way we’re running ourselves out of it or giving them a shot to get bailed out of facing Adell in that inning with Seymour on.

Kwan is not as fast as you think

The camera stayed on the outfielder and did not show the base runners

In the replay view where they’re showing the ball coming into the right field corner from home plate you can see Kwan rounding second and heading to third and then in the next view where you see the right corner and the RF grabbing it. Seeing them together was where I decided he never would’ve made it.

Ah, thanks! All I heard afterwards was that dude has a cannon arm, so I figured it was something like that.

I have ADHD so my mind is not always patient for reviews and wanders off often 😂

I was there last night and had a pretty good view of it. In real time I actually did think he might have been able to score, but as others have said, that outfielder's arm is not one to test in that situation, especially with 2 outs. Adell is our best RBI guy and he came up big in a similar situation the night before. I was upset at the time that they didn't send Kwan, but I think holding him and trusting Adell was 100% the right decision despite it not working out. Baseball is cruel haha

u/cfallsjoe 5h ago

It was a risk based decision. He might have scored but the RF has a cannon and they only had 7 outs left. Holding him you had a chance to tie the game with a hit and your cleanup hitter up. If you send him amd he's out you wouldnt have that chance and only have 6 outs left and Adell leads off the inning with no one on. IThey wanted Adell up with a chance to tie it with a hit and take the lead with a HR

Their RF has a really good arm. I think it ended up being a good throw too, so I don't think he would have made it. I thought it was the right decision to hold him. I'd like my chances to get one more hit and potentially tie than gamble on him making it and then still needing a hit to tie it. If it was a one run game, maybe it's worth the gamble. The third base couch is Rouglas Odor.

I think it was worth the shot to send him. The relay throw from Palacios wasn't a good one. Kwan isn't a burner by any means, but I'd rather them take the risk in that scenario.

Doubtful...

A good hit by Jo and the game is tied.

That's what I remembered when it was over.

Too many guys stranded.

u/KGEighty8 13h ago

I think if he's the tying run you send him. But you can't run yourself out of the inning when the tying run is on 2nd.

Kwan might be one of the slowest on the team. As a leadoff hitter with a solid OBP, he had fewer steals than Rocchio, Martinez, and some others. Josh Naylor, he of 300 lbs, had three times as many steals as Kwan this season.

u/Lanky_8646 12h ago

Lots of good comments here, I learned a lot. But yes, same here: as the play was underway, I fully expected Kwan to score on a two-out double, and was surprised when they didn’t send him.

1

u/AwkwardCase4758 11h ago

I don’t think he’d be close to scoring honestly

Can't make a claim to your specific question bc I asked the same in the moment and the tv broadcast did not seems to show a great angle.

Overall I feel this is a missed opportunity for broadcasts that I wish they showed with data. Meaning a Birds Eye view with throw velocity and runners speed to then display a % likely of scoring.

1

u/DaniG08765 11h ago

He could have forced a play, and it's hard to know if he would be safe or not depending on that play. I thought it was a toss up to send or hold. But I'm aggressive with sending people in my mindset.

u/thehildabeast Cleveland Buckeyes 9h ago

I think 3rd base coaches generally are too conservative but that was not the spot to send him and go for it

1

u/Beautiful_Earth_7699 7h ago

They relay was garbage so he’d probably have been safe but I’m not upset about the decision

I'm starting to get used to seeing runners stop at every base and scream at the sky and pound their chest and shake their dick at the opponent's dugout.
