News/Updates Claude Code UI Update
New Claude Code UI update. What do you guys think?

u/Human-Many3060 1d ago
Now instead of doing my work I am figuring out how to get grouping by folder back... 🙄

u/AnOnlineHandle 23h ago
I just want the context usage to show in the little circle down the bottom back in the web ui. The only way to show it now is a floating elements to the side which feels super janky and distracting, whereas it was perfect before in the usage popup.

u/kidsmeal 1d ago
I don't understand this one, I have the new UI but my conversations are still sorted on the left?

u/Flueworks 1d ago
Grouped by environment. If you run some locally and some in the cloud, they are not grouped.
Also if you run different repos on the same cloud environment, they are grouped.1
u/ShortTheseNuts 14h ago
They've been super clear that there will only be cloud in the very near future. Local is going.
1
u/bvknight 7h ago
Why? What does it gain them to move the work which already routed through their servers to being hosted on their servers (or github) too?
The day I can't use an AI subscription on my local files would be the day I stop subscribing.

u/Neverbethesky 19h ago
Came here for this. How?!
1
u/muzamuza 14h ago
Create new environment based on repo/folder instead. You do it by right clicking the empty space in the left nav - super hidden feature.

i'm diggin the new UI. took a sec to get used to the new rail but i like the info it exposes

I fucking hate this update

Is this the moment you stop adapting to change?

Or it's the moment you start trying to be the change you want see!

u/Droopy0093 14h ago
Can't argue with that! If one hates it, then it is time to move on. I for one love this update. Orchestrator sessions have never been so capable as they are now

CC outside the terminal seems way less efficient to me
34
u/omicron8 1d ago
why? there is a terminal inside the app
10
14
u/Vfn 1d ago
Multiplexers. I’m sure you’ll can work your way around that, but that’s why CC in the terminal is superior to me.
It also is just much nicer to stay in the terminal when you need to do stuff CC shouldn’t be doing.
11
u/omicron8 1d ago
The app has multiple threads and subagents with one coordinating agent. I haven't found a good multiplexing system that is better. Happy to hear input.
5
u/Connguy 23h ago
Orca is my favorite, superset is similar.
The big benefit is you can quickly generate worktrees for each of your projects/tasks, and then organize tabs within the context of that worktree. So I've got a claude session, maybe a codex session, a raw command line (for managing my dev environment), a git manager side panel, and full IDE all isolated to this one worktree, and I'm able to instantly switch between those worktrees as needed.
3
u/college_hustle 23h ago
Everyone has different needs. I made a comparison chart that includes the desktop app but I guess I have to update it now https://mackforge.dev/charts/agent-managers/
1
u/Vfn 18h ago
Sure, but it’s not a multiplexer, right?
It means I have one pane open with say Claude, and another one split on the middle, maybe clean terminal and one running a dev server. Then I have many tabs for each project/app/whatever. And it’s fully customisable exactly as I want it.
That being said I have colleagues that use the app version and it’s fine for them.
I think just running one CC also lets you access all sessions by pressing left arrow. But I don’t use that really.

the future is not local development
2
u/946789987649 20h ago
perhaps not, but the current definitely is. By the time the future arrives, new and better tools will arrive with it.
1
u/Fidel___Castro 18h ago
but they'll be cloud based is my point, because agents need to be online anyway

u/South-Professor-8888 1d ago
100%. Terminal does tasks really well compared to CC. I'm dodmt realise it had terminal in CC though.
13
u/fickle-phenom Developer 1d ago
Depends on what you do, the built in browser is superior in terms of UI stuff and internet work.
1
u/South-Professor-8888 1d ago
So claude helped in browser building a phone keyboard. Then i moved to CC which was so unreliable to begin with, i lost credits due to losing connection. They didnt care about that.
then i tried Claude terminal and it pushed through a lot of stuff. Design wise I've always found ChatGPT to be the best one. Especially compared to Gemini too.

u/klumpers 1d ago
Hated it at first, but it's grown on me, particularly after seeing the daytime scheme. It's something that could have been done really badly, but they put some effort into it, particularly when clicking on the screen. To be fair, I think Claude Code welcome screens have been poorly done up to now, aesthetically speaking.
5
u/TheVoyant 16h ago
Seems like a downgrade all around. Things look worse/not as organized, the side panel in Claude was clean af before.
Now it looks like someones unfinished vibe coding...
And suddenly my usage is draining like crazy too, so I think it affected something in the new build.
8
u/gordonfogus 17h ago
Anyone else here only ever used it in the terminal?

I have been evangelizing using Desktop. It use to suck and terminal was better, but for like the past month or so - it feels so much better. With mods I just don’t think there is a good reason for most people to not use it over terminal

but with Claude Codes and mods you can ad an AI Waifu.

I used to be a terminal user because it felt faster until I realized I can do all of the things and more in the desktop app (Code tab). I got tired of managing so many terminal tabs with split windows, in the app it’s so much easier and you can easily open artifacts, sub agents, simulators, web previews, but best of all is managing an endless amount of chats at once (grouped by status is the way).
This new update took some getting used to but I actually enjoy it better as it feels cleaner and better organized. Really love they split out usage limits and context, and you can customize what tabs appear in the floating panels on the right.

u/ColoredTriangles 18h ago
Is there a feature where you can start a new session on a local machine from remote? The desktop app is still missing the function of starting a machine session with the phone that is paired to that machine for /rc.
1
u/Anxious-Yak-9952 18h ago
Have you tried running “claude rc” in the terminal for your project? That needs to be running in order to start new session remotely.
1
u/ColoredTriangles 18h ago
I start every session configured with /rc but I mean the vice versa. You try to start a session from the phone paired to a machine but a local process for the machine. I do this with tmux right now because the phone only gives you the option to start a cloud session.
1
u/PsychNerd94 18h ago
I know this is like the one thing I wish was native
1
u/ColoredTriangles 18h ago
There is a janky way to do it but you have to run the remote-control server on one session locally and then you can do this but I wish there was some toggle or config on the desktop app UI that lets you do this if this is not a feature because of security concerns.
1
u/Bakuryoko 16h ago
I use the cli and write /rc on it, and I work from the browser or my phone. I think browser is the same as desktop app doesn't it?
1
u/Anxious-Yak-9952 15h ago
It's not the same experience, the desktop/mobile apps are definitely more feature-rich than web versions.
3
3
u/lardymcfly69 10h ago
It now takes three clicks to change effort level instead of two. For zero benefit. Clear functional downgrade
5
5
u/risingrogue 1d ago
Looks like they removed the worktree checkbox and every new session starts in a new separate worktree now. Am I missing something? Otherwise this is a big crock of shit
6
u/Ominoiuninus 23h ago
It’s hidden inside of the environment setting and also branches are hidden in there as well. UI change made me switch to T3 cuz what the hell anthropic

Love this update and quite a significant one, makes it easier to use and looks better - the background motion is kinda cool. But they move the context window to the sidebar away from the limits seems kinda confusing 🫤

u/The-Hyrax 1d ago
I assumed everyone used Claude Code in VSCode or Terminal

Ditto. Had no idea this even happened. I don’t like it, but I never see this screen

u/UnimagineDragons 23h ago
I boot on PC, go to cursor and open a new terminal, type "rc Claude" and do 90% of my personal work on my phone (at my actual job). Maybe like 10% on the actual PC.
1
u/reminiscent-fruitbat 1d ago
I use Claude Code in Zed. Am I the only one?
1
u/college_hustle 23h ago
Maybe. What do you like about it over the 30 other agent managers?
2
u/reminiscent-fruitbat 21h ago
Zed is more of an IDE than an agent manager. What I particularly like is how seamlessly it integrates with development containers. It handles building, starting, and connecting to containers, so I can open a project and have the entire development environment ready.
On top of that, it provides a single UI for Claude Code conversations, file viewing/editing, shell access, Git control, and project navigation. VS Code can do this too, of course, but I prefer Zed’s speed, lightweight design, and native macOS experience.

u/finch5 1d ago
The app is the gateway for a lot of folks, myself included.
The coding app has the benefit of being able to mold the UI to present questions in a more natural manner. If Claude Code is asking questions, it shows me decision cards, formats and organizes the questions so that they're more digestible than just text.
The windows app has a small slider to go from chat/cowork to claude code. The experience of code is very similar to chat/cowork.

How does it differ? Would you say using it in terminal is better?
-4
u/sammcj 1d ago edited 1d ago
Gosh yes. Using the actual Claude code app (TUI) is faster, lighter, easier to split window and manage multiple sessions. I don't really know why you'd use the code mode in Claude desktop tbh?
19
12
u/finch5 23h ago
I don't know if you're dumping on the app knowingly, but the things you describe are clearly easier on a GUI... like the app we're discussing.
Splitting sessions? One click, GUI splits, you can resize windows. Just because you may have memorized keyboard combos doesn't make that the better way. Ultimately, I think it' just people/users backing what they know,
Questions, input requests, output text can be formatted and displayed in a less plain text way. This aids comprehension and uptake speed.

Cant see equations in the CLI

there are mods for that, like https://github.com/atomashevic/claude-latex-math

each Claude session is in its own firecracker VM, and there are no limitations on use because no one is abusing it.
but it's currently a way to get a disgusting amount of compute with just a single user subscription

u/nickmullen_real 20h ago
ummmm easy access to old chats within each repo, managing multiple chats on the sidebar instead of trying to remember which quarter screen sized terminal window had which chat

u/namezam 23h ago
Every major desktop app update I try it again, but I keep coming across odd bugs and having to switch back to terminal. The biggest issue I have is when I have an orchestration main thread running multiple sub agents, they just.. die, like the main agent waits and then like 30 min later I see still hanging out and ask the main thread and it’s like “the agent’s last response was 12 minutes ago, it might be hung”. About 20% of the multi-agent prompts have some issue and I’ve only had an issue once in the console and that was because I hit my limit and everything went to shit after the 1h cache clear.
I really like Warp, what do you use? Or you still raw dogging Terminal/Powershell? :)
2
u/recurrence 22h ago
The terminal is simply one of the best UX designs ever made. It has stood up to decades of progress and people still prefer it.
1
u/college_hustle 23h ago
What do you like about warp? I keep finding things to add to my list: https://dtiger1889-ops.github.io/agent-deck-comparison/
1
u/namezam 7h ago
I love the save layouts feature. I have all my projects set up to quickly open everything I need. Some projects have 1 repo and that’s all it is, a single terminal in the correct directory ready to go. And some projects have 3 repos, each with its own terminal, and a spare terminal to run commands and look at things. It just works, I’m in with everything laid out and predictive commands (like running Claude with my switches). I even have project profiles for running on each of my monitors. Sometimes I’m dialed in on my main ultra wide and sometimes I’m gaming or remoted in to a server on the main monitor so I have profiles to run it on my portrait 4k to the side.
I’m sure others have these features, and I’m sure (from the comments I’ve read) that others are better, but I’m in my happy zone with Warp. I don’t even use all the fancy theme stuff either, just straight black terminals. I have decades of dev experience but console use always seemed archaic to me, so when AI first got big I was in VS Code for everything. It was amazing till it wasn’t (bugs) and I begrudgingly started to learn cli interfaces to things I never bothered to learn before. Got hooked.

I miss the filter to see my archived sessions per folder. Plus, the update made some of my active sessions gone, I cannot find them on the side bar. Anyone else?
1
u/AntaresDaha 10h ago
Same for me, any luck finding those archived sessions?
2
u/strongwinderic 2h ago
Only that view to see all sessions, on the tab of archived sessions. All in one messy bucket :(
1
u/AntaresDaha 2h ago
Hey thanks, this is basically what Claude told me as well, only there is no "Sessions" for me.. even if it makes me look a little foolish, could you maybe DM me a screenshot of your view and mark were to even see "all sessions"?... I swear there is no such thing for me all I got under Claude Code ist Artifacts, Routines, some other shit and the Grouping
2
u/Arturi_to 19h ago
Where's the usage tracker? Like not the % bar but that one that showed days active, tokens used, etc when opening a new chat?
1
1
u/Quitzicz 18h ago
Click on the Blue Circle in the bottom right. Shows usage, tokens, context, ect.
1
u/CzarcasticX 17h ago
Talking about all time history. How many days you used Claude, total tokens usage lifetime, etc.
1
u/The-Pork-Piston 1d ago
It’s awful, I was using it in some sessions because I prefer the browser layout.
1
u/cylix99 1d ago
And theve removed routines! which is really annoying - now have to use schedules to catch up on night time runs, which is terrible to navigate
1
u/AfternoonFinal7615 1d ago
I quite like it, but does anyone feel as a difference from using the CLI interface in terms of speed and getting products out then using this inter
1
u/college_hustle 23h ago
Desktop is a whole venv wrapper. Idk if CLI is faster for actually producing work but my desktop is faster when I'm not trying to use the app.

I dont like that it doesnt show how much tokens you've spent. Is there anyway to see it somewhere else?

Yes. /stats or something /usage on cli i forgot, you can directly run that through claude's terminal

Why does choose environment sit in the middle of the screen and not go away once chosen, just seems untidy.

I feel like the new way they have projects is actually a big deal. Isn’t each project basically just an agent, like a “dot”? I really think the Claude app has essentially the Agent stuff already in it, they may just need to do a better job pitching it.
1
u/jlmeredith 10h ago
I am having a hard time understanding the projects change. My employer is an anthropic partner and we have had projects for a long time. For me they provide direct context. In code I use work streams and directories as "projects". What am I missing?
1
1
u/TheInkySquids 13h ago
Was actually annoying me just recently how there was no way to choose how many sessions were shown under each project so your entire sidebar would be taken up by one project's many sessions, so glad they fixed that

Where are all the branches and worktree selections? I used to have a nice list I could pick from for each session...

This is a terrible update. Creating a project now takes longer. They’ve moved parts of the interface into separate blocks and changed how statistics are displayed. I want to roll back to the old version.
2
u/pseudorep 1d ago
Yeah this has gone from power user to vibe coder UI.
1
u/Content_Bad938 1d ago
I doubt this is convenient for them, either. They also removed the overall usage statistics from the main page - and these grouped chat threads, who even asked for those? Why change something that was working perfectly fine? These are rhetorical questions.
-2
u/cleverhoods 22h ago
I'm happy that I'm using the cli
