Bad luck or bad maintenance?

I grabbed 4 different bikes today and realized very quickly they had no functioning brakes… idk why someone would drop the bike off without disabling it after when it’s completely unusable… or are the techs marking them usable without checking? Either way super dangerous and increasingly more common.

The Belt Parkway bike/run path is one of the longest in the city, and would be amazing to get around the area. It sucks that citibike service ends in Bay Ridge.

Genuinely why are most ebikes at a dock locked

Usually it’s night time I’ll see them all locked up but today was after work, 21st and 6th ave.

App said there was >10 available ebikes. There were around 20 I walked by blinking red. I walked to the very end to find only 3 available ones: 2 had shitty brakes, one of them had a decent front brake, bad rear brake, only 7 miles left but I took it.

Same thing this morning in midtown — only 4 e-bikes were not blinking red. 1 just had a grinding sound as I walked by, 2 had good mileage but awful brakes, and 1 had great brakes with 7 miles left.

Are they all damaged? If we’re reporting one brake being shitty then yeah makes sense. But right after work (5:30pm) when everyone’s trying to get home feels suspicious.

When are the 2 new Greenpoint docks coming?

The two “coming soon” docks in north Greenpoint have been showing up in the Lyft app for a while but there’s no indication of when they’ll be active. Does anyone know?

Angel points are getting super cheap

6 bikes and 61 open spots yet it’s still designated as a take away for points?

Feel like I’ve been noticing this a lot.

Bike angel question about 0-point rides while on a multiplier

i just started doing bike angels in the last week. i tried searching but couldn't find an answer to this... my question: if i have an active 2x or 3x multiplier, and i do a 0-point ride to get to an area where there are better point value stations, what happens to the multiplier? will it go away since i did a non-positive ride? or does the multiplier stay in tact, and nothing happens?

since i don't know, i've been walking longer distances to get to areas with the higher point stations. while it's good for my health, it's very time consuming. thanks in advance.

track each station in the city's availability over time

this interactive dashboard (which i made with the help of data from ctbk.dev) shows when each station in the city runs out of e-bikes

TL;DR, there are a ton of neighborhoods where it's an arms race to get an e-bike in the morning and some additional e-bikes in the morning could help a lot

Made an app for iPhone and Apple Watch to check Citi Bike stations before you walk over!

Back in August I posted a TestFlight link in this subreddit . Street Ridr is now available on the App Store!

It puts the number of bikes, e-bikes and open docks on every Citi Bike station on the map, so you can see where the bikes are without opening stations one by one. Tap a station for the walk there and a Look Around photo of the street.

On Apple Watch, it runs without your iPhone and has complications. On iPhone, there are widgets, and a Live Activity keeps the station you're heading to on your Lock Screen while you walk. Once you're there, the Ride button opens the Citi Bike app so you can unlock a bike.

Street Ridr doesn't rent bikes itself (and most likely never will).

I works in 50 other cities too, which is handy when you travel.

It works on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. More features are coming soon, starting with support for iPhone Duo!

You can get it there: https://apps.apple.com/app/street-ridr/id6796118877

If a station you use looks off, or something's missing, tell me! Also if you have feature requests, please share them!

I’m 16 in NYC, unemployed, and Citi Bike keeps putting $20 holds on my card

I’m 16 and live in NYC. I use Citi Bike to get around and have a Citi Bike SNAP membership.
On my old account, it showed a $1 charge, and I didn’t seem to have this problem. On my current account, every time I unlock a bike, Lyft puts a $20 pending authorization on my card. At first, the app showed $1, but my bank showed $20. Now it doesn’t even show the $1 anymore.
Support says the $20 is temporary and can take 5–7 business days to clear. I understand it’s a pending hold and not necessarily a completed charge, but that doesn’t help when the money is unavailable to me.
I don’t have a job or money for everyday expenses. I’m 16, and I can’t ask my parents for 20$ just to unlock a bike. Most of my rides are only around 7 minutes.
I’ve contacted support multiple times and tried another payment method. They said a specialized team is investigating, but the $20 holds are still happening.
I’m not trying to avoid paying for my rides. I just want to use my membership without having $20 tied up for days every time I ride.
Has anyone else with a SNAP membership experienced this? Is there a way to get this fixed or stop these holds?

E-bike seat on regular Citi

Saw the gray e-bike seat on the regular Citi bike today. Thought it was interesting. Did they run out of regular seats at the service center? The bike also looks new or at least recently refurbished.

Brooklyn Coop no longer offering codes

Went to renew my yearly discounted premium membership offered through Brooklyn coop credit union and they said they’re “out of codes until December”. Any luck with NYU credit union?

End trip docks switching from neutral to pickup after drop off and negating bike angel points

I start at a pick up dock (for points). Find a neutral or drop off dock to end (for points). While I’m at the actual dock, off the bike, the app shows it as a neutral station. I close the app and lock the bike. When it registers in the app and texts me that the ride is over my ride history then shows the end dock switched to a pick up doc, therefore negating my start points.

Is there no buffer? We’re talking 10-20 seconds tops. Can it really switch over that fast. Isn’t there metadata showing I’m there with the bike checking the app?

Had this happen to me two days in a row. Went back and forth with Lyft customer service and they said sorry couldn’t help. Has this happened to anyone else?

Finally learned to ride a bike at 21, now looking for affordable ways to keep riding

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I finally learned how to ride a bike at 21. It’s been two weeks and I’ve loved every minute of it. I already feel healthier, and it’s turned into a great way to build community. I’ve been reconnecting with friends around the city just by asking them to go for a ride with me.

The one problem is cost. Rides add up fast, especially on e-bikes, and while I’d love to get a membership, the price is a barrier for me right now.

Owning my own bike isn’t really an option either, since my living situation doesn’t let me buy one and keep it at home.

Has anyone been in a similar spot? I’d really appreciate tips on discounted memberships, student deals, community bike programs, cheap storage options, or anything else that’s helped you keep riding without breaking the bank. Thanks!

New problem with docks?

Had never had this one before today…e-bike docked just fine mechanically (i.e. it was locked in), but ride didn’t end. Several other bikes in the dock were still flashing too; don’t know if those riders just didn’t notice or had to bail so just left them. Called for help and the agent ended my ride from her end, so not a big deal ultimately, but thought I’d post as a reminder to check that your ride has really ended even if bike feels securely docked. Agent said dock was offline, but it wasn’t, it showed as fine in the app and was accepting bikes for docking.

I think they fixed the algorithm somewhat. Availability for both bikes and docks seems a lot better lately. Point opportunities too.

Passenger Exits Cab Into Bike Lane - RANT

I just need to vent about a bike accident I was in today and the shocking indifference and lack of concern from the pedestrian or driver involved. Other than a good bruise on my shin and my nerves a bit shaken, I am not injured and totally fine. I'm just pissed and ranting.

I biked to work at 3pm today in light rain on an electric city bike. I was riding in the bike lane on Vanderbilt between Atlantic and Fulton and saw a car idling near the bike lane 3/4 of the way up the block.

While I got within less than 10 feet of that car, a passenger opened the door and began to exit the vehicle, clearly oblivious to the fact that she was in the bike lane and that I was right there. I screamed "HEY!" while I slammed on the breaks, but due to the rain and the e-bike speed I immediately hydroplaned and the bike continued to move forward while angling towards the road. I quickly realized I needed to bail and somehow managed to sort of hop off the bike towards the sidewalk in time not to hit the passenger exiting.

The bike toppled over with my legs still around it and caused me to stumble over onto the sidewalk. My backpack fell and everything in the side pockets fell out and went everywhere. It clearly looked pretty dramatic and I am REALLY LUCKY it was not worse. It could have been MUCH WORSE.

It was a perfect storm of events. The rain. An e-bike at top speed (never doing that in the rain again, learned my lesson). The uber parked next to the bike lane rather than just *in* the bike lane and on the curb. An oblivious passenger.

What really pissed me off and continues to bother me is the fact that neither the passenger or the driver paid me any acknowledgment or checked to see if I was ok. The woman barely even looked at me. Like what? I can't imagine being aware that I stepped into the bike lane without looking and watched a cyclist scream and crash and then just......not paying attention and going inside. It was so heartless it made me feel terrible.

I understand that she was probably feeling embarrassed or maybe scared herself. I'm sure the whole thing was a jumpscare. I also yelled 'What the fuck!' once the bike crashed, and it's possible she was afraid of me, and I can understand being afraid of the man who just crashed who is yelling on the ground.

Anyway, that's it. I made it to work, inspected my leg to discover just bruising, completed my shift, and even biked home (just slowly). Very grateful it was not worse. But very confused at the lack of concern.

Ended up backtracking quite a bit and calling a cab. Crappy, won’t be using Citi bike for a while after this. I’m a casual rider. I ran into like 3 young girls in tears because there were no stations and the Strokes concert was about to begin. I hope they made it!
