Moderator Update More Mods Wanted - Details Inside ✨

Hello Everyone -

I am looking for some additional mods for this community. Over the last year or so I’ve taken on moderation for a lot of cat communities in an effort to fight the spam and bot problem cat subs are hit with. I’ve stabilized most of these communities and am looking for more partners in each to help with the modding load and ensure the safety of our community culture.

I am asking that new mods be willing to join a private Discord server that I’ve created for the subs I mod. You will be given specific roles and access to the channels dedicated to the sub yous you mod in the group. This is to help with onboarding, training, and general communication.

Some basic tenants of all communities I mod that I expect new mods to be in alignment on:

  • These subs are AI Free, meaning all content posted must be created by the person posting and must not be AI.
  • We have a zero tolerance for participation from spam and bot accounts - this includes NSFW promotion or heavy adult content accounts.
  • Disagreements must be civil no matter who is “in the right”; harassment of community members or mods is not tolerated.
  • Submitted content must be relevant. We do not do “one time exceptions” for content a mod happens to like/want; that is a slippery slope. Consistent enforcement matters for a healthy community.

Some specifics about modding in this community:

  • This is an advice community which means it functions differently than other cat communities. You will be doing a lot more content moderation.
  • Rules are constantly in flux in this community, I have to update them here the most of all my subs to keep the place healthy and safe for cat owners.
  • We get a LOT of product posts and survey requests which are not allowed.

What you’ll be spending most of your time doing in this community:

  • Removing posts or comments that are product ads or survey requests or demo requests, we have a very hard line on advertising.
  • Removing over the line medical advice - both human and pet.
  • Mediating heated disagreements with locking, removals, and bans as necessary.

Before applying to mod:

  • Please take some time to read the sub rules and familiarize yourself with them and ensure you feel comfortable enforcing these rules.
  • Consider how much time you’re able and willing to mod. I don’t expect highly active mods, I can continue taking on the bulk. But if you go “inactive” you will be removed during my quarterly mod maintenance days.

Apply by modmailing me here to start a conversation. You do not need to have prior modding experience but if you don’t or you have little we expect you to be curious about learning new things. You are also welcome to check out other subs I mod and apply to multiples!

Feel free to ask questions publicly below!

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 Nightmare Litter - Beware!

Decided to try World’s Best natural cat litter for the first time. Safe to say never will again and recommend avoiding it, I will never roll the dice again.

Bought a brand new bag, first off the shelf from the store. Cut it open and dumped it. Smelled like an old corn crib but figured that was the natural fiber and ignored it. Saw black specs and such but so use to litter with crystals and the like I didn’t pay it any mind.

Went about my night for about three hours and decided to check if the cats has used the new litter or not. Enter my laundry room to see a swarm of what I can only assume are corn weevils or something similar swarming out of the boxes. Luckily was able to kill them and I think clean it all up and toss it as of now.

Back to Dr. Elsey’s I go

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 I need a LARGE and HIGH sided litter box!

Help. 😩

I have 3 male neutered cats, two of my boys are perfect. One of them loves to pee so high and I have not found a litter box to catch it! I am so angry with myself because I am a licensed veterinary technician and I give litter box advice constantly to clients yet I can’t even figure out my own issue.

I currently have 4 boxes. They are all large, stainless steel boxes, and I have to have plastic “pee guards” up to catch the pee on the high pee-er. I do like the stainless steel because I feel as if they do not hold as much smell. However, I cannot find one that’s big and tall enough! Two of my boys are on the larger side, they’re 12 and 13 pounds and the high pee-er is 9lbs. So, I need a large enough size for the bigger guys to have room to get in and spin around.

My ideas:
1. DIY Litter Box: Has anyone made their own litter boxes out of plastic storage bins?

  1. Mango Cube XXL Cat Litter Box: I found this one on Facebook advertising. Has anyone used this?

  2. Automatic Litter Boxes: I have had the Litter Robot. I had two and ended up selling both because they stunk so bad and were so hard to clean. However, Petlibro has come out with one “Luma” that seems interesting.

Please help. 🥲

Help me stop my cat pooing in my sons room

We've recently moved house. My cat knows where here litter tray is now located. She's used it several times. But she also keeps pooing in my 3 year old son's room, in the exact same spot.

How do I stop her doing this?

Ever wanted to get your cat something special like when giving your dog a bone?

I want to start off saying this is NOT an ad. I’m a regular guy wanting to share something good to help floofs the world over. My ploofball asked me to do this for them.

I discovered this when I noticed the sad look on my ploof’s face one day after giving a bone to my shepherd boy. There aren’t many obvious treats that last longer than a couple seconds for a cat. The lickables work well but I wanted something akin to the bones dogish likes so much.

In comes Purr Pops. It’s a freeze dried chewable treat on a stick, basically like a lollipop for cats. After 3 days of consistency (giving her one after the pup takes his bone into the playroom), she started quite obviously looking for me and asking for her lollipop. She rubs against me and “flirts” with me, showing true appreciation for finding her something she enjoys as much as her dog buddy. It’s soo special to me to give her something she truly enjoys, so I figured it’d be best to share with my fellow cat lovers! I want your cats to be as happy as mine! 🐱

Coir Wonder charcoal litter deodorizer - anyone tried?

I saw this product recommended online and am curious if anyone has tried it? It isn't available near me so I would have to get it online and the cost plus shipping isn't cheap! I'm hoping to find out if it is worth the cost.

Tips and Tricks 💡 Cat Proofing Bathroom, Room?

I am a first time cat owner of a 7 week old kitty I rescued off the street at 4 weeks. He is now confidently jumping onto my nightstand (3.5ish ft) and can scramble up his 4.5 ft cat tree.

How should I safely cat proof my room and bathroom? I’m mostly worried about skincare on my bathroom countertop (bottles and tubes). Do I need to put everything away in cabinets and drawers? What is safe to leave out on desks and countertops, and what will they chew threw? Thanks!

Any experience using stainless steel sifting litter box for wood pellets?

Hi cat lovers!

I have been using Van Ness plastic sifting litter box for almost two years with wood pellets. It has mostly been a good experience compared to clumping litter. But the sawdust would often get stuck in between the sifter holes and it would require me to poke the sawdust clumps one by one when cleaning, which gets really irritating.

Recently, I have noticed there are a lot of stainless steel sifting litter boxes, and I was wondering if anyone has any experience using them. I heard they're better for odor, but I wanna know if anyone experienced similar sifting issues and how these do. Thank you!

Cat eating carpet??

My 7 month old kitten is bitting and scratching at the carpet under the door of my bedroom. He goes into the common room often, he has scratchers and toys that we play with. I tried a scratch deterrent from petco but he doesn't seem to care because he still scratches and bites at it. I am living in an apartment and I need to get this to stop. Redirecting, letting him out and playing with him are not working i need some sort of solution please.

Cat Pooping Help

My cat keeps pooping in a specific corner of my living room, despite there not being a litter box in that specific area. I don't particularly want to put a litter box in that corner either since I'm concerned she'd start using it more. So y'all have any specific recommendations on how to keep her from pooping in that corner?

Since it's in a corner, I don't usually notice the poop right away. But when I do, I clean it up. And in the next 2 weeks or so she'll poop there again. But if there's still poop in the corner then she won't poop there again until I clean it. So I'm pretty sure it's some sort of territorial/dominance thing.

Also, I've already checked with the vet and it's not a medical issue. Not to mention that this has been an ongoing cycle for at least 2 years now. Also, she's 8 years old, and she didn't have any problems like this until she started pooping in this specific corner a couple years ago.

Automatic feeder recommendations

Hey! Looking for advice on automatic cat feeders. I have two cats and would prefer a dual feeder. It needs to be cordless, and durable.

My cats are monsters lowkey and they’ve broken one feeder already, and gone through 2 cords on their current automatic feeder. My cats always take their collars off, so an RFID feeder is out of the question unfortunately.

I’m honestly willing to pay whatever at this point, as long as it’ll last and worth the money.

Litter Avoidance after Bringing in Second Cat

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but we have had an issue with our cat (female, fixed) refusing to poop in the litter box after bringing home a second cat (male, fixed) two years ago. She will pee in it. We’ve tried several different boxes and placements—big, small, covered, uncovered, out in the open, tucked away privately, etc. We have three litter boxes and he generally won’t use the one she pees in. She has been checked by the vet and has a clean bill of health. Our second cat definitely annoys her (he’s younger and wants to play), but they will also occasionally cuddle and lick each other, so I’m not sure if this is still a stress reaction to the newer cat. Any advice on helping her become comfortable again?

CAT HAVING ACCIDENTS ON FLOOR

Hi,

I am currently fostering a cat and for the first 2 weeks she was so well behaved and great at using her litter box. I brought this one :https://www.kmart.com.au/product/stainless-steel-high-side-cat-litter-box-43661756/srsltid=AU7gw4V2ci3xm7mWldUdS3XC60AdJ9hYLoKsdBrbisyLPeg5se7Nw_ZK and am using the litter that the foster place provided. The litter box is located downstairs.

Two nights ago when I awoke I realised the cat had done a poo next to upstairs couch on the rug. I cleaned it up and put it down to a once off. Then today I was just doing some work on my computer upstairs and saw my cat scratching the hard wood floor and though oh thats odd, then 5 minutes later when I stood up I realised this was because she had peed on the wooden floor. about an hour before this incident occured I heard her go downstairs and use the little box.

I do not understand why she is being selective about her litter box usage and why her accidents are only occurring upstairs??

Please someone/ anyone provide some insight and tips!!!

Litter or Litter Box 🚽 Behavioral Aversion to pooping in the litter box. PLEASE HELP!

As the title indicates my female, neutered 5 years old cat has not been using the litter for pooping for 3 years now. We went to the vet several times and she confirmed that while at the start, she was doing that due to a UTI, that is no longer the case. She is physically healthy and there is no medical reason for her to stop using the litter for pooping, especially since she actively uses it for peeing normally. The vet said its likely behavioral and prescribed anti-anxiety meds and stool softeners, both of which were used religiously. It has not fixed the issue. She continues to do it on the floor, on clothes, on carpets and as of recently on the bed. Its never in the same spot twice in a row that would mandate placing a pee pad or a litter box in that area (we tried that too didnt work). She has access to outside balcony but she doesnt eat plants nor drink the rainwater.

We have removed all carpets from the house, threw away mats and some of the clothes and whatever we could salvage, have been religiously cleaned with enzymatic cleaners and washed on high temprature. We have 3 litter boxes in the bathroom, living room and in the bedroom, which we have seen her using for peeing. We live in 1 bedroom apartment, and we are limited on space so its not possible to add another litter box.

We noticed she holds in her stools, tries to use the litter and then panicks and jumps out of it and run, then prowls, snifs around and then poops on the spot. Alot of times she does it out of our sight, for example the bedroom when we are in the living room so we have to lock in our bedroom after feeding time. However, since she holds it in, its unpredicatable when she goes to poop. Most of the time, she just goes to the other room and poops without the panic and anxiety behaviour. Other times we would be on the couch and she would do on the coffee table or around us by the coffee table. Once I caught her mid way, brought her to the litter and she jumped out and did it on the floor, again picked her up then again jumped out. It was a deliberate avoidance.

We tried different vets and went through blood tests that turn out normal. We switched litter types, we switched her food to expensive sensitive food per a vet recommendation and it didnt help. She is on wet diet mostly and we add water to her wet food and she drink & eat it all. She gets her vaccination and deworming tablets on time. Other than this issue, she is not experiencing any other concerning symptoms. When we bring her to the cat sitter, she is the most social kitty per the cat sitter and she still continues the behaviour.

We just want to know how to get her back to stopping this behaviour. Its getting frustrating for me and my partner and I am at loss on what to do and how to stop it. It became so frequent, I have started contemplating rehoming her. Its brutal but at this point, I dont know what else to do and I hope someone else can help her.

TLDR. Physically healthy female neutered cat refuses to poop in the litter box and started doing on the bed now. In need of dire help otherwise she will need to be rehomed.

Cat gut motility issues and stinky poops

My cat has bad gut motility and we’ve been to the vet for it multiple times. He’s on Royal Canine GI fiber response and his poops have been so stink. We use Dr. Elsey’s cat litter in stainless steels open top litter boxes. The smell is so bad, I am considering getting a litter robot. We clean our litter boxes daily, sometimes twice and that doesn’t seem to help. Any advice on the smell? Anyone with cats with bad gut motility? Would a litter robot help?

Play and Toys 🛝 Built a cat tree, but the scratch post is the main feature

A pair of 2x4s screwed together and then sisal rope wrapped around it. I drilled a hole to start and stop the rope and then put a screw in to keep it from moving. Our kitten loves to scratch on it. I feel like my couch may be safe.

Edit: For those worried about stability. That is a solid 2x10 base and the post is 2 2x4s screwed and glued together. They're heavy. Trust me, the thing is stable. Not my first build, the cat is safe, I promise!!

Edit 2: Seriously, folks! I promise. I have built a lot of things from wood, this is stable. I don't know why people think I would put my pet at risk just to show off a thing, but I'm getting that vibe. If you want more info about this, shoot me a dm and I can explain the physics. I'm literally a physics teacher.

Tips and Tricks 💡 Got a little gremlin that like to live IN your couch?

Post image
717 Upvotes

We have two cats that would love to live inside our couch (and have with our previous couch). So when we bought this new one we started looking at barriers for the bottom of the couch. All the ones we found were expensive and really kind of unappealing.

Then my wife suggested PVC pipe. It worked like a charm! I used 1” PVC pipe and connectors, when you set up the corners be sure to account for the size of the connector AND an additional 1/2” for the pipe in the fitting. I’m no genius, so I had to measure and fit as I went. This thing has kept them out from under the couch for over a year and kept almost all of their toys out too. Hope this helps someone, good luck.
