(EDIT: I'm mainly asking about HXS vs VFV, I do recognize that HXT is TSX and HXS is US market.)
Many years ago, when I was young and stupid (as opposed to old and stupid like I am now), I bought HXS and HXT in my non-reg account. Portfolio is now about $200K, with an unrealized capital gain of about $125K. I have about $400K of VFV in another non-reg account that also has a similarly proportional unrealized capital gain.
I'm in retirement and starting to draw down my non-reg account first per my retirement plan, and trying to decide whether I should draw down using the VFV or the HXS/HXT--I'm probably going to be selling about $70,000 of my non-reg assets per year.
I'm mostly looking at it from a fees perspective. In looking at Horizon's HXS page, it says the current MER is 0.11%, the TER is 0.49%, and the Swap Fee is "up to 0.50%". This all seems to me to add up to higher fees than VFV.
I get the idea that HXS/HXT has the tax-advantaged approach to distributions and so on, but I'm struggling on how to figure out whether the higher fees make it worth it, and thus I'm wondering should I draw down the HXS/HXT first, or the VFV?
