Has the time come to reconsider the qualification age for the Old Age Security pension, and boost it to age 70 over the next 10 years?
Initially in 1951, the OAS only paid universal benefits to those of age 70 or above. This was gradually reduced to age 65 in 1970.
But, the life expectancy of a Canadian born in 1970 was 72.6 years; one born in 2025 has an expectation of 82.9 years. So, the government is providing a benefit for so many more years now. This in the face of baby boomers hitting age 65. How many these days even think of someone of age 65 as being "old aged"?
Prime Minister Harper brought in changes to boost the qualifying age to 67. Trudeau reversed that, with no logic offered.
It seems the age could easily be shifted to 70 again. Each year, lift it by one-half year.
