Problematic Professor Advice

Throwaway account because I know this professor is active on this sub

Just need some advice from anybody who has gone through something similar. I’m taking a zoom class and the professor has made some questionable comments that have made me suuuuper uncomfortable. A few weeks ago she, a white woman, made comments about how Black people are “traitors to their race” if they become police officers. Then today she told the class that we should all get tested for a learning disability because she wasn’t satisfied with our work. I’ve never had a professor make comments like this to their students it feels so unprofessional and inappropriate.

The zoom classes are not recorded so I don’t have proof that this happened unfortunately but I definitely wasn’t the only student who was made uncomfortable by her comments. What should I do???

Who’s the professor sounds familiar? Is it from the English department

No I don’t think so but it sounds familiar. Dr. Luck, the department chair , is so welcoming and great to talk to. At any time you can pop into her office and she will drop what she is doing and listen to you. She is very discrete, won’t say who you are but she will pop in and observe for herself. I didn’t complain about who I think you are talking about because I would respond to those comments and embarrass her, but I had a tougher situation in another class and Dr Luck took care of it, very discreetly and made a change. Here’s the thing, we are paying ALOT for this education we deserve better. If you don’t feel comfort speaking to her in person, send her an email and tell her how you feel, she will be discreet. Also she is a disability advocate so trust! That comment about learning disability will not fly!

Thank you for this advice. I’ll look into talking with Dr Luck

Yes, please raise these concerns with the chair. This sounds wildly inappropriate and I'm sorry your professor is making you and other students feel uncomfortable.

Do not follow others' advice to record the class without permission. California is a two-party consent state, meaning it is illegal to record the professor or other students without their permission. Instead, you could write down any additional problematic comments the faculty member makes.

Do you by chance have a windows laptop? If so I’d screen record it with Shift+windows+s. Then you can record the audio like that. I don’t know how to do it on Mac, but that’s one thing you can do then take it to the principal

To add to this, also screenshot comments too if there is any left

If you aren't able to record or screenshot from your laptop. Maybe use your phone or an old one to record the interaction if it happens again.

Yeah the English department is wild, I’ve had issues with professors in the past and one of the ones this semester doesn’t like me but it’s fine. I truly wonder how they got their degrees in teaching.

Here is my take on this issue. First, download OBS and go to this YouTube channel: Hammer Dance.

As far as reporting her to the Dean's office, I don't know, after noticing all the nepotism with programs, who gets in and who doesn't. It’s a bit suspicious that they take photos of new students to keep a record. You're in a kind of bad situation. Someone will come along and say, “You’re overthinking, buddy.” As they say, when a Black man calls out BS. But back to your situation. Other than reporting it to the Dean's office without proof (because, legally, you’re not supposed to record lectures unless the Students with Disabilities Department authorizes it). Good luck!

I'm so curious who it is! Though I do have a theory as to who it might be.

The professors at Cal State University. San Bernardino are unprofessional. I regret attending the school.
